Automatic personal identification from their physical and behavioral traits, called biometrics technologies, is now needed in many fields such as: surveillance systems, access control systems, physical buildings and many more applications. In this paper, we propose an efficient online personal identification system based on Multi-Spectral Palmprint images (MSP) using Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and Principal Components Analysis (PCA). In this study, the band image {RED, BLUE, GREEN and Nearest-InfraRed (NIR)} is rotated with different orientations then applying the PCA technique to each oriented image, to decorrelate the image columns, and concentrate the information content on the first components of the transformed vectors. Thus, the observation vector is formed by concatenate some components of the transformed vectors for all orientations. Subsequently, we use the HMM for modeling the observation vector of each MSP. Finally, log-likelihood scores are used for MSP matching. Our experimental results show the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed approach, which brings both high identification and accuracy rate.

Recently, a wide variety of applications require reliable personal recognition systems to either confirm or determine the identity of an individual requesting their services. So, a reliable identity recognition system is a critical part in these applications that render their services only to genuine users. Thus, biometrics is an emerging technology that utilizes distinct behavioral or physiological traits in order to determine or verify the identity of an individual. In this context, the present paper attempts to design an effectively biometric system by using Finger-Knuckle-Print (FKP) traits. In this study, the feature vector of each segmented FKP is extracted using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG). In addition, a multi-class Support Vector Machine (SVM) based learning algorithm is used to train the system using the extracted features vectors. From the test results, using PolyU FKP database with 165 persons, it is evident that our scheme has higher identification rate and very less classification error compared to several existing methods.

About some years ago, several biometric technologies are considered mature enough to be a new tool for security and ear-based person identification is one of these technologies. This technology provides a reliable, low cost and user-friendly viable solution for a range of access control applications. In this paper, we propose an efficient online personal identification system based on ear images. In this purpose, the identification algorithm aims to extract, for each ear, a specific set of features. Based on Gabor filter response, three ear features have been used in order to extract different and complementary information: phase, module and a combination of the real and imaginary parts. Using these features, several combinations are tested in the fusion phase in order to achieve an optimal multi-representation system which leads to a better identification accuracy. The obtained experimental results show that the system yields the best performance for identifying a person and it is able to provide the highest degree of biometrics-based system security.

Nowadays, identification of persons has a great importance for information protection and access control. Thus, automatic person identification based on biometrics has become a focus of interest both for research and commercial purposes. Among the biometrics used, palmprint identification is one of the most stable and reliable technology. Some desirable properties such as uniqueness, stability, and non invasiveness make this technology suitable for highly reliable person identification. In this paper, a method is proposed based on Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) descriptors for palmprint identification. This method utilized the fusion, at matching score level, of some classifiers (Radial Basis Function (RBF), Random Forest Transform (RTF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM)) to improve the performance in identification accuracy. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed method with respect to the identification rate.

We propose an approach for dependence tree structure learning via copula. A nonparametric algorithm for copula estimation is presented. Then a Chow-Liu like method based on dependence measure via copula is proposed to estimate maximum spanning bivariate copula associated with bivariate dependence relations. The main advantage of the approach is that learning with empirical copula focuses on dependence relations among random variables, without the need to know the properties of individual variables as well as without the requirement to specify parametric family of entire underlying distribution for individual variables. Experiments on two real-application data sets show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Depth information is a very important cue to understand human motion. In this paper, we establish that, even with no real depth camera, the concept of obtaining depth information is applicable for human motion detection. We propose a new motion detection method based on the concept of a real world video surveillance system enhanced with depth cameras. It is developed for detecting and analysing human motion. First, it imitates depth measuring process of a depth camera. Specially chosen in the image during the initialization process, view points play the role of cameras, whereas the depth is measured as a distance from these points to the human figure in the image. Initially, the body is partitioned into four segments to obtain the information about which part of the body is moving. Then, in course of the working cycle of the method, the received depth values are constantly subtracted from the previously obtained values, and the intensity of the body motion is calculated using root mean square. The method has been tested on actions taken from a standard motion dataset (IXMAS). It proved to be stable and reliable. © 2012 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Terrain models typically contain huge amount of data so they are very time consuming for visualization purposes. This especially comes to the forefront when urban environments are included. The main compromise in representation of the complex environments is between achieved quality and time consumption. With the simple texture representation of complex environments we will accomplish fast application, and with the large polygonal meshes, high quality of the rendered scene. In this paper we propose rendering of urban and natural environments using parallax and relief mapping. This approach combines benefits of the rendering of polygonal meshes and texture approach. Thereby, in the proposed approach improved quality on the one side and increased speed on the other side is combined. The applicability of the method is demonstrated trough parallax and relief mapping within the Irrilicht open source graphics engine. The shaders programs were made with the GLSL shader language. As the result, the tests were made to determine the possible usage of parallax and relief mapping in the display of natural and urban environments.

We construct new families of multi-error-correcting quantum codes for the amplitude damping channel. Our key observation is that, with proper encoding, two uses of the amplitude damping channel simulate a quantum erasure channel. This allows us to use concatenated codes with quantum erasure-correcting codes as outer codes for correcting multiple amplitude damping errors. Our new codes are degenerate stabilizer codes and have parameters which are better than the amplitude damping codes obtained by any previously known construction.

The tensor rank (also known as generalized Schmidt rank) of multipartite pure states plays an important role in the study of entanglement classifications and transformations. We employ powerful tools from the theory of homogeneous polynomials to investigate the tensor rank of symmetric states such as the tripartite state |W3⟩=13(|100⟩+|010⟩+|001⟩) and its N-partite generalization |WN⟩. Previous tensor rank estimates are dramatically improved and we show that (i) three copies of |W3⟩ have a rank of either 15 or 16, (ii) two copies of |WN⟩ have a rank of 3N−2, and (iii) n copies of |WN⟩ have a rank of O(N). A remarkable consequence of these results is that certain multipartite transformations, impossible even probabilistically, can become possible when performed in multiple-copy bunches or when assisted by some catalyzing state. This effect is impossible for bipartite pure states.
