An extension of the analytical results of Kaup & Newell (1978) concerning the effect of a perturbation on a solitary wave of the Korteweg–de Vries equation is given and numerical studies are conducted to verify the conclusions. In all cases, the numerical results agree with the results predicted by the theory. The most striking feature of the perturbed flow is the presence of a shelf in the lee of the solitary wave whose role is to absorb (provide) the extra mass which is created (depleted) by the perturbation.

We generlize Lemmas 7.3-7.7 from the Odd Order paper. Those lemmas we extend from p-solvable groups to pi-separable groups, where pi is an arbitrary set of primes. Note that even in the ease pi = {p} some of our results present proper generalizations. In some proofs we use the solvability of groups of odd order (in the case /pi/ < 3 our results do not depend on the solvability of groups of odd order). We give also very short (and, sometimes, new) proofs of some related known results, for example, Thompson's A x B-Lemma. Corollary 3 extends Lemma 8.2 of W. Felt and J. G. Thompson (Pacific J. Math. 13, 1963, 775-1029) from p-groups to solvable groups. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.

The paper classifies multilinear algebras, known as comtrans algebras, that are determined by pairs of matrices and have dimensions which are less than or equal to two. The comtrans algebras are isomorphic if and only if the corresponding pairs of matrices are multiplicatively cogredient by a matrix M.

Event structures in nonstandard quantum mechanics are represented by closed subspaces of a nonstandard Hilbert space. There are four natural types of closed subspaces of a nonstandard Hilbert space and these different types coalesce in the standard theory. These types are the closed internal subspaces, the splitting subspaces, the ⊥‐closed subspaces, and the norm‐closed subspaces. The algebraic properties of these four types are studied and compared. Moreover, the resulting structures are compared to others that have recently appeared in the literature. ? 1994 American Institute of Physics.

A problem of Lighthill and Levich, where convective heat (mass) transfer occurs through a boundary layer, is considered. This gives rise to a certain integral equation. The unique L 2 solution of a generalized version of this integral equation is obtained providing the solution, in closed form, of the original problem.
Fractal image compression (FIC) is an auspicious technique for encoding images. It is based on fractals that can be found in an image and the generation of duplicating blocks based on mathematical transformations. The...

Let G, H be groups, M subset of or equal to G. A mapping f: M --> H is called a Product-equality-preserving (PEP) mapping iff it satisfies (*)M For All a, b, c, d is an element of M[ab = cd double right arrow f(a)f(b) = f(c)f(d)]. Theorem. Let G(1),G(2) be nonabelian groups with centers Z(1),Z(2) and let M(1),M(2) satisfy G(i)\Zi subset of or equal to M(i) subset of or equal to G(i), i = 1,2. Let f: M(1) --> M(2) be a PEP mapping that maps M(1) onto M(2). Then there is an epimorphism phi: G(1) --> G(2) and upsilon is an element of Z(2) such that for every x is an element of M(1), f(x) = upsilon phi(x). (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
