This paper discusses a visual method of measuring the geometric parameters of elements produced by electrodynamic stamping. This paper presents also electrodynamic method which is an unconventional machining technology, which complements the capabilities of traditional technologies, in particular as regards the formation of metal elements with low-profile dies of complex shape. The article discusses issues related to resolution of the vision system, resolution of laser beam analysis, and resolution relating to the measurement of the height profile on the surface of the product. Based on the model constructed in such a way, measurements are presented in order to assess the dimensional parameters. Based on tests and analyses of the three-dimensional model, a range of inspection tasks using 3D vision systems is indicated. © (2011) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

In the present study a sandwich plate, of rectangular form, with magnetorheological (MR) fluid core is investigated. The plate consists of two outer layers made of aluminium and an MR fluid layer in between. The plate edges are clamped. It was assumed that the aluminium layers are pure elastic. The energy is dissipated in MR fluid layer. Additional assumptions concerning displacements, deformations and stresses are introduced in calculations. The active segment of MR fluid layer is placed in various parts of plate. The optimal positions of active segment for selected modes of vibration are determined. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper discusses a visual method of measuring the geometric parameters of ropes and evaluating their wear based on measurements of a three-dimensional rope model. The 3D model is created using the method of laser triangulation. Selection of appropriate geometry of camera and laser lighting arrangement allows collection of the height profile of the observed rope surface in the selected cross-section and, subsequently, building of a 3D model. The resulting model is a representation of the actual dimensions of the rope and allows determination of the parameters describing its basic geometric dimensions and condition of rope surface. Determination of those values and parameters allows estimation of the degree of rope wear. The article discusses issues related to resolution of the vision system, resolution of laser beam analysis, and resolution relating to the measurement of the height profile on the surface of the rope. Based on the model constructed in such a way, measurements are presented in order to assess the dimensional parameters and surface defects in sample rope structures. Based on tests and analyses of the three-dimensional model, a range of inspection tasks using 3D vision systems is indicated. © (2011) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

In this paper, design of Takagi-Sugeno controllers for a twin-rotor system from empirical data is addressed. First, identification of linear models using Prediction Error Method in the presence of nonlinear distortions and in feedback systems is revisited, and it is demonstrated that feedback nonlinear systems with an integral action can be locally represented by linear models rather than affine models. Moreover, it is demonstrated that how the consistency and unbiasedness of the identified models can be improved by proper design of the experiments. In order to ensure that the unmodeled contributions in the resulting piecewise linear model are sufficiently small, a criterion is proposed based on the small-gain theorem that can be used for unfalsification of the piecewise linear model. Finally, by taking advantage of the separation principle, design of fuzzy Takag-Sugeno state feedback and observer is formulated in terms of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). The implementation results on the actual system demonstrate significant improvements with respect to the initial controller and previous work on similar systems.

While using a laser to process hard tissue, it is difficult to guarantee, that the laser beam is always perpendicular to the tissue surface. Therefore, it is necessary to know the dependence of ablation depth on angle of incidence for preoperative planning. Considering the propagation of the ablation front, an Addition Model is developed in this work. It indicates that the shape of a crater ablated by a single pulse with non-zero angle of incidence can be regarded as the sum of the original tissue surface and a symmetric profile, which is corresponding to the shape of a crater ablated by perpendicularly incident beam. Meanwhile, the ablation depth at a point P is defined as the distance from P to the original tissue surface along the optical axis of the incident beam. In the context of this definition, the dependence is experimentally studied. The results of the experiments were unexpected: the ablation depth is independent of angle of incidence up to ca. 55°. Possible reasons for these results are discussed. © 2011 SPIE-OSA.

The earlier research shows that the electrical capacitance sensor through the tomography technique is applicable in flow visualization or image reconstruction, named as Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT). ECT can be used for imaging industrial multi-component processes involving nonconducting fluids and solids in pipelines. The electrical capacitance sensor is a non-invasive device that uses non-intrusive technique to measure the concentration of flow inside a closed pipe by measuring variations in the dielectric permittivity of the material. The capacitance of the sensor changes when the mean dielectric constant between the electrodes varies due to variations in the percentage of gas and liquid flowing in the pipe. The acquired concentration profile that obtains from capacitance measurements is able to imaging liquid and gas mixture in pipelines, meanwhile the system development is designed to attach on a vessel. The electrode plates which act as the sensor previously has been assemble fixed on the pipeline, thus it causes difficulty for the production to have any new process installation in the future. Therefore on-board sensing plate offers a new design and idea on ECT system which is portable to be assembled in different diameter sizes of pipeline, and it's flexible to apply in any number due to different size of pipeline without redesign the sensing module. The on-board sensing plate development contains signal conditioning circuit and sensing electrode built in a single module (embedded on single plate). In this paper, the details on fabricating the sensors electrodes, had been described, including signal conditioning circuit/electronic part of measurement, such as stray immune capacitance measurement circuit, amplifying circuit, AC to DC converter circuit and filter circuit. © 2011 IEEE.

General principles of mathematical modelling of transient heat transfer in cross-flow tube heat exchangers with complex flow arrangements which allow a simulation of multipass heat exchangers with many tube rows are presented. First, a system of differential equations for the transient temperature of both fluids and the tube wall with appropriate boundary and initial conditions is formulated. Two methods for modelling heat exchangers are developed using the finite difference method and finite volume method. A numerical model of multipass steam superheater with twelve passes is presented. The calculation results are compared with the experimental data.

The investigation of this work is to analysis the sensitivity distributions using two differential excitation potentials, in order to improve the situation of: (1) non-uniform sensitivity distribution: (2) less sensitivity in the central area and (3) non-linear change in ECT (Electrical Capacitance Tomography) system. Simulation using COMSOL Multiphysics is developed in order to obtain the changes in capacitance inter-electrodes and the permittivity of the dielectric material when two differential excitation potentials were injected. The MATLAB simulation is used to obtain the sensitivity distribution inside the closed pipe from the sensor. Generated phantoms and measured values are presented. Simulation is verified using available experimental data through the existing system, 16- segmented ECT sensor electrodes by PROTOM Research Group UTM, MALAYSIA. By using this technique the linear relationship between the capacitances measured to inter-electrodes and the permittivity dramatically improved and the sensitivity distribution for an opposing electrode pair was increased thus gives the sensitivity distribution in the central area increased. The use of this technique does increase the level of detection signals and the SNR(signal noise to ratio) compared to those achieved using standard single-voltage source method. © 2011 IEEE.
