Green software and its products are crucial in solving the problems associated with the long-term use of software, especially from a sustainability point of view. A few studies have proposed green software but are still limited and lack balance measurements to attain green products. At the same time, without a mechanism for measuring the green ability of a particular software product executed in a specific environment, the mentioned benefits will not be guaranteed. Although sustainability and green can be accomplished when all dimensions are in balance, there is still a lack of balance measurements to achieve green products as needed by the industries and societies. The contributions of this study revolve around the works on green software measurements to attain a green software product from a sustainability's perspective. It provides a green measure structure consisting of the element, measurements, sub measurement, and metric. The study presented in this paper was conducted through theoretical review and contributed to the initial green software measurements investigation. © 2021 IEEE.

Choosing an appropriate supplier involving multiple choices is a complex decision to maximize the overall profit and increase customer satisfaction. This paper proposed the TOPSIS-based method and interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IVIFS) to deal with multiplicity in solving food supplier selection. In this study, the qualitative evaluations concerning criteria are described by IVIFS linguistic variables. The linguistic evaluations are analyzed using the ten-step computational procedures including entropy weight of criteria and relative weight. The closeness coefficient and score degree of alternatives is obtained to select the best performer. The findings suggest that the supplier Hex-food (A 3 ) was the most preferred as this alternative scored the highest closeness coefficient and score function and C 3 (delivery performance) was the most important criterion. This study contributes to assisting the practicality of business in selecting the best supplier and provides some insights to the potential food manufacturers in choosing the appropriate supplier.

Robust method is a popular approach to dealing the existence of outliers in the data. Many researchers have applied Huber weight function. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the performance of the Huber weight function and the modification of the Huber weight function on the temporary change (TC) outliers. The data used in this paper were generated as ARMA(1,0)-GARCH(1,2) model via the Monte Carlo simulation. There are three major situations in this simulations: without weight (WW), with Huber weight (WH) and with a modified Huber weight (WMH). Three different TC contamination (0%, 10% and 20%) and three different time series length (100, 500 and 1000) were tested. The performance of the three situations was compared on the basis of AIC, SIC, HQIC, MAE, MSE and RMSE. The results of the numerical simulations show that the performance in the WMH situation is better than the WH situation in the presence of TC outliers. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd. Image corner detection is a principal task for successful pattern recognition and identification. Finding corners of a shape usually involve two steps, firstly, shape segmentation and, secondly, locating corners in its boundary. This paper presents a robust method for detecting shape corner points using enhanced curvature properties. Numerous applications like image retrieval, object recognition, and motion tracking uses these corner points, which contain essential information about their location or position in a particular shape. Six existing shape detectors and descriptors, i.e., the Harris, SUSAN, Harris-Laplace, CSS, SIFT, and global and local curvature properties (GLCP), have been compared with the proposed shape detection method yielding its performance. The binary image dataset has been utilised as a benchmark to test the experiment. The experiment exhibits a significant number of true corners of the shape and outperforms the existing methods in terms of accuracy and reliability. © 2020 IEEE.

Visible light communications (VLC) are widely used in industries in order to transmit data signal from transmitter to receiver. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the research conducted on luminance distribution for VLC. Luminance distribution can contribute significantly for visual performance and visual comfort. The introduction to the basic ideas of VLC systems is followed by a review of the modulation strategies applied by researchers. The optimization of lighting schemes is also discussed, along with the challenges and limitations of various approaches. The benefits of using multiple light sources are also included in this paper. The review concludes by summarizing the research gaps identified and proposing future work in this area. Overall, the aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state-of-art in luminance distribution of VLC systems with a focus on highlighting areas for future improvement. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The Covid-19 outbreak had a big effect on the global economy, but there was no exception for education. While this pandemic issue may seem like a force for change, it is also seen as a catalyst for the change of learning style patterns in line with new technology in the world of education. Due to the necessity to transition from face-to-face learning to online learning, the teaching and learning process at the school level will continue. Students have been exposed to online learning as a supplement to more traditional means of instruction, especially face-to-face instruction in the classroom, in order to maintain teaching and learning sessions. The use of digital technology in online learning has the potential to modernise and enrich the teaching and learning environment. The purpose of this study is to measure the participants’ performance in a short-term mathematics program by comparing the participants test scores before and after attending a short-term program known as “Program Bijak Sifir” during Movement Control Order, MCO. This study involves 44 kids (15 males and 29 females) from a variety of different primary schools. The Mann-Whitney test was used to determine whether there is a statistically significant difference in performance between genders and age group. Meanwhile, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test was used to determine the significant difference in student performance before and after the training. There was a significant difference in participants’ performance prior to and during the program, with the latter showing an increase in performance. This demonstrates that effective use of digital technology in the classroom, even for short-term projects, has a favorable effect on student achievement.

Adaptive iterated local search for quadratic assignment problem

Iterated Local Search (ILS) is one of the classical metaheuristics that is frequently used for solving the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP), a commonly studied NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. Despite the effectiveness shown by the ILS when solving the QAP, many possible enhancements can still be implemented, based on studies conducted on other combinatorial problems, for example vertex coloring problem, vehicle routing problem, network design optimization, and many others. Among possible approaches for improving the ILS are by implementing adaptive ILS and multi-start strategy. Adaptive ILS is implemented by dynamically changing the perturbation strength of ILS during the run, which focus on developing a robust algorithm that can solve a wide range of instances. Multi-start strategy on the other hand, focus on applying restart or diversification during ILS run to prevent early stagnation. Adaptive ILS with frequent and large perturbation strength change has shown the best overall result when it has obtained the lowest deviation to the best-known solution compared to others. Implementation of Multi-start strategy showed bad performance, except on Taillard75e instance, in which it frequently found the best-known solution compared to others. Both adaptive and multi-start strategy have shown interesting results that may be further studied for ILS improvement.

To assist in the management of medical waste such as storage,transportation, and disposal of the waste, forecasting the amount of medical waste generation is crucial. This study applies Nonlinear Autoregressive (NAR) Neural Network to forecast the generation of medical waste in Hospital Taiping, Perak for two years, from 2021 to 2022, based on data of medical waste generated during 2018 until 2020 on monthly basis that comprises 36 datasets. The data were randomly divided into 60% for training, 20% for validation, and 20% for testing. The results predicted that for 2021,the total medical waste generated would be 397 510.564 kg which shows an increasing trend compared to the previous year. For 2022,the result predicted 326 608.8845 kg of total medical waste generated which shows a decreasing trend from the predicted previous year. In conclusion,the NAR Neural Network method is considered reliable and may aid in the forecasting of medical waste generation for more efficient waste management plan. © 2022 IEEE.

Sensitivity analysis based on the direct differential method for dynamical systems with discrete delays

Mathematical models appear in many forms, such as instantaneous dynamics (ordinary differential equations) or time-lags dynamics (delay differential equations). It is important to investigate the effect on the model outputs when a perturbation is applied to the initial or boundary conditions, time delay parameters, or any model parameters in the governing equations. In this paper, we study the general theory of sensitivity analysis based on the direct differential method for systems governed by delay differential equations. Problems governed by ordinary differential equations can also be considered as a particular case of delay differential equations with the absence of delays. The normalized forward sensitivity indices are then computed to identify the important model inputs. To show the efficiency of the methodology, we apply the theory and numerical computations to immunology and infectious disease models.

ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a renewable energy source in which energy is produced by converting the heat stored in the sea or the ocean thermal energy into valuable work, based on the temperature difference between the warm surface seawater and the cold deep seawater. One of the OTEC system requirements is to have a seawater temperature difference at a minimum of 20 °C within a depth of 1000 m below sea level. Recognizing the importance of optimum sea water temperature, several studies have been conducted to optimize the OTEC system. However, none of these studies was attempted under a hybrid ocean thermal energy conversion (H-OTEC) setup. A H-OTEC system is a combination of closed-cycle and open-cycle OTEC system. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the H-OTEC process system based on the impact of seawater temperature variation by simulating H-OTEC process system. Aspen HYSYS was used as a chemical process simulation platform for conducting this study. After the model was completed, verification test was conducted before the simulated data was recorded. The data for the pump work input and the turbine work output were acquired to determine the net power output and system efficiency. The net power output, Carnot efficiency, and thermal efficiency were recorded approximately 1.39 kW, 5.7%, and 1.45%. The data for net power output and the efficiencies of the system was recorded for every 1 °C of increment in surface seawater temperature. The results showed that the net power output increased slightly by 0.5kW, with efficiency difference for both Carnot cycle and actual cycle, recorded to be less than 3% and 0.1% respectively. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
