Fish Larvae Counting System Using Image Processing Techniques

This paper presents the use of computer technology based on image processing techniques to count the number of fish larvae with less time processing. Computer technology used is as an alternative solution to the manual counting approach method in term of determination fish larvae survival rate, stock assessment and monitoring fish growth population. Generally, the fish larvae counting is performed with sequential process with laborintensive task which difficult to be used for counting large sample dataset. Traditional counting method has been used for many years, however many researchers highlighted several drawbacks of the manual counting process such as time consuming, laborious, required human skills-eyes, less-accurate, less consistent, difficult to estimate with many large sample and too many involve with human intervention. Since the problems is addressed, many researchers are interested to develop many techniques to facilitate the process of fish counting with fast assessment. In this study, we present combination of image processing techniques that consists of image enhancement, edge detection, and thresholding process. Meanwhile, the blob analysis is used as the statistical information to measure the objects properties in the image automatically. Total number of 150 samples dataset of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were used in the experiment. All the samples are divided into three part which are small dataset (50 samples), medium dataset (50 samples) and large dataset (50 samples). The performance of the proposed method and the manual approach method are compared based on the number of fish that was successfully estimated and processing time taken through the experiment. All 150 samples of fish larvae were collected from the Freshwater Hatchery of University Malaysia Terengganu. Tolerability to the specific ranges of environmental parameters form a limiting factor to the mangrove species distribution. This characteristic is translated into the formation of mangrove zones in a mangrove forest. Mapping the mangrove zonation pattern is a challenging task especially when the mangrove cover is thick and dense. The aim of this study is to identify and map the mangrove zonation pattern at Pulau Kukup, Johor using a high resolution WorldView-2 satellite data and Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA) system, SPRING 5.2. Mangrove extent was extracted from multispectral and panchromatic images using region growing segmentation method. Several thresholds were used to identify the best-fit segmentation parameters. Eleven plots of 100m transects were established in the study area to sample the representative mangrove trees. The type of mangrove species, tree height, Diameter at the Breast Height (DBH), elevation, and coordinate location were collected during the field survey based on Point-Centre-Quadrate Method (PCQM). The general characteristics of mangrove tree were investigated and sampled from 186 mangrove trees. Rhizophora apiculata and *** were found dominating the outer part of the mangrove island facing the seaward area. From the field analyses, the relative density of Rhizophora apiculata and *** are 41.9% and 16.7% respectively. The mangrove coordinate locations were then recorded and used as a reference point for classification process using the Bhatacharyya distance. Three multispectral band combinations were tested for classification. Classified map with the highest accuracy level (94.05%) was constructed using the band combination 7 (near infrared-1), 6 (red-edge) and 5 (red) for the study area. From the study, it was found that the application of OBIA technique in mangrove mapping had successfully classified the dense mangrove cover. This paper presents accurate control parameters estimation of the hydraulic Power Take-Off (PTO) model for the wave energy conversion system to maximise energy production. In general, the performance of the hydraulic PTO system depends on the parameters setting of hydraulic PTO system components such as hydraulic motor displacement setting, pre-charge of the hydraulic accumulator, and et cetera. Conventionally, it requires to manually obtain the optimal parameters of a hydraulic PTO system by repeating the simulation process. However, this estimation method exposed to human error and would easily be resulting in a non-optimal selection of hydraulic PTO parameters for the wave energy conversion system. Therefore, an easy and accurate approach of using the GA optimisation method for determining hydraulic PTO parameters was introduced in the present study. This approach is simple and more accurate compared to the conventional optimisation method. The hydraulic PTO model was developed in SIEMENS/Amesim environment using available components in the library. The specifications of the actual hydraulic PTO system components from the manufacturer were used during the simulation set-up. The complete hydraulic PTO system was optimised using a special genetic algorithm (GA) optimisation tools in the SIEMENS/Amesim software. The simulation results showed that GA was effective to determine the optimal configuration parameters of hydraulic PTO system. From the results, the optimal configuration parameters of hydraulic PTO system were successfully reduced about 38%. Consequently, the maximum force applied to the WEC devices was reduced up to 34%. This force reduction is important since it will enable the WECS to be operated during a smaller wave condition.

This paper considers the relation between expenditure on education and household income level for the three types of income group in Malaysia. An ordinary differential equation model has been constructed using a flow diagram that shows the relation between the population of Malaysia based on the income groups with the monies invested in education. The model was solved analytically by finding the equilibrium points, and later on, the Routh-Hurwitz criterion was applied to investigate the stability of the equilibrium points. From here, a simulation has been performed to predict the effect of investment in education for each income group on household income for the next ten years. The result shows that the population in the 840 income group increased dramatically even though they have increased their expenditure on education.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is an important role in affecting visitors and staffs' health in library. However, good ventilation and suitable types of furniture materials in the indoor environment were important to preserve better indoor air quality for the occupants. In this study, the status of indoor air pollution using in-situ measurement for chemical and physical parameters had been examined. The chemical parameters measured were formaldehyde (CH2O, ppm), carbon monoxide (CO, ppm), carbon dioxide (CO2), fine particulate matter (PM2.5, mg/m3) and coarse particulate matter (PM10, mg/m3). The physical parameters such as relative humidity (RH, %), temperature (T, °C) and air movement (AM, m/s) were also measured. The dominant sources of IAQ had been determined by using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Principle Component (PC-2, S1) and PC-1 (S2) (CO, CO2 and CH2O) have become the indicator for chemical contaminants and the number of occupants that present in the library. The main contributor of indoor air quality at both areas was thermal comfort, which contributed 56.146% (PC-3, S1) and 60.76% (PC-4, S2). In conclusion, air quality in the libraries was affected by surrounding activities, ventilation performance and physical parameters.

General mathematical model and timetabling problems: Expansion and application to real-time timetabling

In this study, we illustrate two additional main requirements needed in a general model developed previously for scheduling problems. These two constraints are mutual constraints that can be found mostly in problems such as maritime crew scheduling, course timetabling and others related. The extended general model is then verified with six different timetabling problems with randomly generated data and further verified its applicability towards a real problem of examination course timetabling of a public university in Malaysia. The mathematical model is tested with a specific range of preferences value that represents their preferred assignments to slots and venues. We used Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to formulate the whole idea and results reported are analysed with Advanced Interactive Multimedia Modelling System (AIMMS) mathematical software and CPLEX as the solver. Optimised solutions were gained for the various problems, which includes the application to the real problem of examination timetabling using the general model constructed. These indicate the assignments were allocated to where it is most desired. The study has proven its applicability to one of the most complicated scheduling problems. We aim for more application to other real problems thus therefore could be classified as a standard model used for all type of scheduling problems.

Dengue fever has become an increasingly significant health threat worldwide. Currently, due to lack of specific treatment or vaccine against dengue, vector control, which is available in many forms, remains a key strategy for dengue fever prevention. Hence, we introduce an iAMR: Intelligent Auto-Dispenser Mosquito Repellent, an innovative system in line with 'Industry 4.0' concept where it includes current trend of automation and data exchange. It also includes cyber-physical systems, the Internet of things, cloud computing and cognitive computing. The iAMR solves the issues of when to spray (by auto-spray using sensor) and long live batteries (with LORAWAN technology). When combined with the mini aerosol (X'MOS), it provides an even more effective mosquito control. This all-in-one system ensures a mosquito-free environment in your home. The iAMR device relies on the microcontroller and sensor in order to operate the intended spraying task. The microcontroller used is an IoT based device called ESP8266 which is a WiFi-embedded microcontroller that utilized standard everyday WiFi band frequency which is at 2.4 GHz. A DC geared motor sensor for dispenser device is used. The main contribution of iAMR is to monitor and track for the mosquito repellant (X'MOS) to be refilled. The implementation shows the iAMR system able to update the level of each X'MOS in iAMR devices which reducing the cost of manual human checking for X'Mos refill.

Research on sea turtle conservation effort which is often linked with exploitation cases has been provided by many literatures, especially at the nesting stage which significantly effects the birth rate of the species. Moreover, there are numerous activities that have been done which contributes to conservation or exploitation of the sea turtle eggs from the nest such as sanctuary beaches, awareness programs, tendering system or even illegal trading issues exist in Terengganu. Most of previous studies focused only on sea turtle biological point of view. However, the mathematical model focusing both efforts are not sufficient, and if there are any, will not portray the direct impact of conservational nor exploitation effect of the sea turtle nests in precise manner. Hence, in this paper, we intend to formulate model from classical Lotka-Volterra 2-species system with logistic growth and population density, we will find its stability attributes and proceed with experimenting different value of conservation effort and exploitation activity parameters respectively. The finding results from this paper may contribute significantly to the sea turtle population management, especially in Terengganu.

A new system of singular integral equations for a curvilinear crack in bonded materials

The modified complex potentials (MCPs) functions are used to develop a new system of singular integral equations (SIEs) for a curvilinear crack in the upper part of bonded materials subjected to shear mode stress with the help of continuity conditions for resultant force and displacement functions. The unknown dislocation distribution function is mapped into a square root singularity function by using curved length coordinate method and the traction along the crack as the right hand term. The Gaussian quadrature rules were used to obtain the numerical solution for a new system of SIEs in order to compute the nondimensional stress intensity factors (SIFs) for these problems. Our results agree with those of the previous works. The findings have revealed that the nondimensional SIFs depend on the elastic constant ratio, crack geometries and the position of the cracks.

Modeling and simulation of manufacture sector data in Malaysia with detection of outliers: An ARMA-GARCH approach

Manufacturing is one of the major sectors that contribute to the economy of Malaysia. The situation of manufacturing sales, especially rubber gloves received the attention of investors to forecast. However, the pattern of economics exposed to unexpected changes, which called outlier which occurred because of internal or external factors. Consequently, give shock to time series data. The main approach used is the hybrid of Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA) model and Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (GARCH) model. The effectiveness of the volatility model with the existence of outliers are measured by Monte Carlo method. Besides, to find the best ARMA-GARCH model there are four models produced from different specifications in ARMA(a,b) and GARCH(g, h) models. In this paper, we used 216 monthly price data of Standard Malaysian Rubber Grade 20 (SMR 20) in Malaysia. The validity comparison of diagnostic checking is measured on AIC, AICc, SIC and HQIC. While the forecasting performance evaluated using MSE, RMSE and MAPE. The results of the empirical analysis indicate that the ARMA(2,0)-GARCH(1,2) model is the appropriate model to forecast the price of SMR 20 that were used to the manufacturing of rubber gloves in Malaysia.
