We analyze the two-orbital (with dx²−y² and d3z²−r² orbitals) analogue of the t-J-U model as applied to the description of the copper-oxide monolayer deposited on the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ substrate (CuO2/BSCCO). We show, that an extended s-wave superconducting dome appears in the heavily hole overdoped regime of the model, with dominant contribution to the pairing coming from the d3z²−r² orbitals. Also, the lower critical doping for the appearance of the SC state concurs with the Lifshitz Transition after which the hole-like Fermi pockets are created around the M points in the Brillouin zone. The obtained results are in accord with the recent experimental result [cf. Y. Zhong et al., Sci. Bull. 61, 1239 (2016)]. An analogous two-band description is also analyzed in the context of the Ba₂CuO₄−y bulk compound, where the heavily hole-overdoped situation is believed to be reached [cf. W. M. Li et al. PNAS 116, 12156 (2019)]. As we show, a two dome structure can be realized in such system with the d- and s-wave symmetries of the gap corresponding to the low hole-doping and heavily hole overdoped cases, respectively. © 2021, CC BY.

Transverse momentum broadening of medium-induced cascades in expanding media

In this work, we explore the features of gluonic cascades in static and Bjorken expanding media by numerically solving the full BDIM evolution equations in longitudinal momentum fraction x and transverse momentum k using the Monte Carlo event generator MINCAS. Confirming the scaling of the energy spectra at low-x, discovered in earlier works, we use this insight to compare the amount of broadening in static and expanding media. We compare angular distributions for the in-cone radiation for different medium profiles with the effective scaling laws and conclude that the out-of-cone energy loss proceeds via the radiative break-up of hard fragments, followed by an angular broadening of soft fragments. While the dilution of the medium due to expansion significantly affects the broadening of the leading fragments, we provide evidence that in the low-x regime, which is responsible for most of the gluon multiplicity in the cascade, the angular distributions are very similar when comparing different medium profiles at an equivalent, effective in-medium path length. This is mainly due to the fact that in this regime, the broadening is dominated by multiple splittings. Finally, we discuss the impact of our results on the phenomenological description of the out-of-cone radiation and jet quenching. © 2022, CC BY.

No-Induced Change in the Oxidation State of Cytochrome C in Endothelial Cells Monitored by Resonance Raman Imaging

Nitric oxide (NO) is a key signalling molecule in endothelial cells, playing a complex role in the regulation of cell apoptosis. One of its critical molecular targets is cytochrome c (CytC), a heme protein whose oxidation state determines its function in mitochondrial respiration and cell death pathways. Using resonance Raman (RR) imaging with 405 nm excitation, we investigated NO-induced changes in the redox state of CytC in various endothelial cell lines. Calcium ionophore (A23187), known to activate endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), induced a shift in CytC from the ferrous (FeII) to ferric (FeIII) state. This effect was cell type-dependent and most prominent in human aortic and dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HAECs, HMECs). The transition was prevented by L-NAME (NOS inhibitor), PEG-SOD (superoxide scavenger), and NecroX-5 (peroxynitrite scavenger), suggesting that ONOO− plays a mediating role. Physiological NO inducers like VEGF and bradykinin also promoted CytC oxidation, but in a spatially distinct manner, suggesting subcellular specificity in NO signalling. Interestingly, applying an external NO donor (DEA-NONOate) did not trigger oxidation but briefly formed a CytC-FeII-NO complex. Despite mitochondrial membrane potential disturbances following A23187 treatment, no apoptosis was observed, indicating that CytC oxidation can be an early, reversible marker of mitochondrial stress rather than cell death. Our findings demonstrate the utility of RR imaging for real-time monitoring of CytC redox state and underscore the complexity of NO signalling in endothelial physiology and its potential implications for vascular health. © 2025, The Authors. The Kochen-Specker (KS) theorem is a corner-stone result in the foundations of quantum mechanics describing the fundamental difference between quantum theory and classical non-contextual theories. Recently specific substructures termed 01-gadgets were shown to exist within KS proofs that capture the essential contradiction of the theorem. Here, we show these gadgets and their generalizations provide an optimal toolbox for contextuality applications including (i) constructing classical channels exhibiting entanglement-assisted advantage in zero-error communication, (ii) identifying large separations between quantum theory and binary generalised probabilistic theories, and (iii) finding optimal tests for contextuality-based semi-device-independent randomness generation. Furthermore, we introduce and study a generalisation to definite prediction sets for more general logical propositions, that we term higher-order gadgets. We pinpoint the role these higher-order gadgets play in KS proofs by identifying these as induced subgraphs within KS graphs and showing how to construct proofs of state-independent contextuality using higher-order gadgets as building blocks. The constructions developed here may help in solving some of the remaining open problems regarding minimal proofs of the Kochen-Specker theorem. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

K Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm is a straight-forward yet powerful Machine Learning (ML) tool widely used in classification, clustering, and regression applications. In this work, KNN is applied, with three distance metrics, to classify different datasets, experimentally testing each distance metric effect on the classification performance. A static K is applied for the whole dataset optimally chosen based on a 5-fold cross-validation. A reconfigurable hardware realization on field programmable gate array (FPGA) of each distance metric applying selection sort algorithm is proposed. The FPGA realization reaches a throughput up to 4.44 Gbit/sec while only occupying 1% of the Genesys 2 Kintex-7 board area. The algorithm managed to classify all the tested datasets with above 90% accuracy.

A Kinetic Simulator For Distributed Mechanically Linked Marine Vehicles

The possibility of performing high-level simulations based on a kinetic model is an important step in the implementation of navigation, guidance, and control systems for marine robots. In the framework of the EUMR TNA project DINGOS, we strive to enhance a simulation tool under MATLAB/Simulink for the CNR catamaran-like vehicle SWAMP (Shallow Water Autonomous Multipurpose Platform) ASV. The vehicle can be separated into two hull vessels that can operate independently, but also with different physical connection between them (like fixed pole or rubber band). In the paper, we will describe the physical modelling of the different connection types in a 3DOF system, the implementation into the existing simulation tool for the whole vehicle, and show the results achieved in simulation runs where different connection types can be chosen and parameterized.

Model-based therapy generation can open new horizons in medicine. Cancer chemotherapy can be optimized using control theoretic methods based on mathematical models of tumor growth. We carry out the qualitative analysis of such a model using the simplest control scheme, i.e., P type control. We look for bifurcations for realistic values of tumor parameters. We show that it is possible to have bifurcations in the closed-loop system, and the qualitative behaviour depends on the initial conditions, and it is independent of the control gain. The analysis shows that the system has rich dynamics and the model can be used to reproduce complex phenomena occurring during real therapies.

In the paper, we describe our studies to realize a control algorithm for distributed marine robots with rigid/elastic mechanical constraints between them. The work is carried out in the framework of the EUMR TNA project DINGOS. Our strategy follows the line to adapt conventional cooperative path-following algorithms from literature to the described problem in order to start to extend the concept of DP3, currently related to Dynamic Positioning, to the phase of motion along a path of a vessel. The usability of different concepts is evaluated following some well-defined quality criteria in a kinematic simulation.

Two series of FeCoNiPdx and CrxFeCoNiPd high entropy alloys were investigated using SEM-EDX, XRD technique and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Increasing of Pd content in the FeCoNiPdx samples only slightly influenced the Mössbauer spectra. They were analysed assuming simultaneous presence of hyperfine field and quadrupole splitting distributions, however random direction of observation relative to Bhf and EFG caused the average QS value to be close to zero. Increasing of Cr content in the CrxFeCoNiPd samples resulted in strong decrease of the hyperfine field, its distribution becomes wide and influence of Bhf,ISBhf and EFG on the Mössbauer spectra can not be separated unambiguously. The decomposing of the HEAs compositions into binary artificial Fe-dopant systems, namely [FeCoNi]-Pd and [FeCoNiPd]-Cr, allowed to interpret the magnetic structure of the two investigated series. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Sensitivity of discrete symmetry tests in the positronium system with the J-PET detector

Study of certain angular correlations in the three-photon annihilations of the triplet state of positronium, the electron-positron bound state, may be used as a probe of potential CP and CPT-violating effects in the leptonic sector. We present the perspectives of CP and CPT tests using this process recorded with a novel detection system for photons in the positron annihilation energy range, the Jagiellonian PET (J-PET). We demonstrate the capability of this system to register three-photon annihilations with an unprecedented range of kinematical configurations and to measure the CPT-odd correlation between positronium spin and annihilation plane orientation with a precision improved by at least an order of magnitude with respect to present results. We also discuss the the means to control and reduce detector asymmetries in order to allow J-PET to set the first measurement of the correlation between positronium spin and momentum of the most energetic annihilation photon which has never been studied to date.
