A search for charged-lepton-flavor violating μτqt (q=u, c) interactions is presented, considering both top-quark production and decay. The data analyzed correspond to 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis targets events containing two muons with the same electric charge, a hadronically decaying τ-lepton and at least one jet, with exactly one b-tagged jet, produced by a μτqt interaction. Agreement with the Standard Model expectation within 1.6 standard deviations is observed, and limits are set at the 95% confidence level (CL) on the charged-lepton-flavor violation branching ratio of B(t→μτq)<8.7×10−7. An effective field theory interpretation is performed yielding 95% CL limits on Wilson coefficients, dependent on the flavor of the associated light quark and the Lorentz structure of the coupling. These range from |clequ3(2313)|/Λ2<0.10 TeV−2 for μτut to |clequ1(2323)|/Λ2<1.8 TeV−2 for μτct. An additional interpretation is performed for scalar leptoquark production inducing charged-lepton-flavor violation, with fixed intergenerational couplings. Upper limits on leptoquark coupling strengths are set at the 95% CL, ranging from λLQ=1.3 to λLQ=3.7 for leptoquark masses between 0.5 and 2.0 TeV.

A search is performed for localized excesses in the low-mass dijet invariant mass distribution, targeting a hypothetical new particle decaying into two jets and produced in association with either a high transverse momentum photon or a jet. The search uses the full Run 2 data sample from LHC proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV during 2015–2018. Two variants of the search are presented for each type of initial-state radiation: one that makes no jet flavor requirements and one that requires both of the jets to have been identified as containing b-hadrons. No excess is observed relative to the Standard Model prediction, and the data are used to set upper limits on the production cross section for a benchmark Z′ model and, separately, for generic, beyond the Standard Model scenarios which might produce a Gaussian-shaped contribution to dijet invariant mass distributions. The results extend the current constraints on dijet resonances to the mass range between 200 and 650 GeV.

This Technical Design Report presents a detailed description of all aspects of the LUXE (Laser Und XFEL Experiment), an experiment that will combine the high-quality and high-energy electron beam of the European XFEL with a high-intensity laser, to explore the uncharted terrain of strong-field quantum electrodynamics characterised by both high energy and high intensity, reaching the Schwinger field and beyond. A search is presented for the pair production of heavy vectorlike quarks (VLQs) that each decay into a W boson and a light quark. This study focuses on events where one W boson decays into leptons and the other into hadrons. The search analyzed 140 fb−1 of pp collision data with s=13 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018 during run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The final state is characterized by a high-transverse-momentum isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, multiple small-radius jets, and a single large-radius jet identified as originating from the hadronic decay of a boosted W boson. With higher center-of-mass energy and integrated luminosity than in the run 1 search, and improved analysis tools, this analysis excludes VLQs (Q) with masses below 1530 GeV at 95% confidence level for the branching ratio B(Q→Wq)=1, an improvement of 840 GeV on the previous ATLAS limit.

Finite-difference method for Dirac electrons in circular quantum dots

A simple and reliable finite-difference approach is presented for solution of the Dirac equation eigenproblem for states confined in rotationally symmetric systems. The method sets the boundary condition for the spinor wave function components at the external edge of the system and then sweeps the radial mesh in search for the energies for which the boundary conditions are met inside the flake. The sweep that is performed from the edge of the system towards the origin allows for application of a two-point finite-difference quotient of the first derivative, which prevents the fermion doubling problem appearing with spurious solutions and rapidly oscillating wave functions.

Universality of local spectral statistics of products of random matrices

We derive exact analytical expressions for correlation functions of singular values of the product of M Ginibre matrices of size N in the double scaling limit M, N → ∞. The singular value statistics is described by a determinantal point process with a kernel that interpolates between GUE statistic and Dirac-delta (picket-fence) statistic. In the thermodynamic limit, N → ∞, the interpolation parameter is given by the limiting quotient a = N/M. One of our goals is to find an explicit form of the kernel at the hard edge, in the bulk and at the soft edge for any a. We find that in addition to the standard scaling regimes, there is a new transitional regime which interpolates between the hard edge and the bulk. We conjecture that these results are universal, and that they apply to a broad class of products of random matrices from the Gaussian basin of attraction, including correlated matrices. We corroborate this conjecture by numerical simulations. Additionally, we show that the local spectral statistics of the considered random matrix products is identical with the local statistics of Dyson Brownian motion with the initial condition given by equidistant positions, with the crucial difference that this equivalence holds only locally. J-PET Framework is an open-source software platform for data analysis, written in C++ and based on the ROOT package. It provides a common environment for implementation of reconstruction, calibration and filtering procedures, as well as for user-level analyses of Positron Emission Tomography data. The library contains a set of building blocks that can be combined by users with even little programming experience, into chains of processing tasks through a convenient, simple and well-documented API. The generic input-output interface allows processing the data from various sources: low-level data from the tomography acquisition system or from diagnostic setups such as digital oscilloscopes, as well as high-level tomography structures e.g. sinograms or a list of lines-of-response. Moreover, the environment can be interfaced with Monte Carlo simulation packages such as GEANT and GATE, which are commonly used in the medical scientific community. Copyright © 2020, The Authors.
