Splitting of proton-antiproton directed flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The rapidity-dependent directed flow of particles produced in a relativistic heavy-ion collision can be generated in the hydrodynamic expansion of a tilted source. The asymmetry of the pressure leads to a buildup of a directed flow of matter with respect to the collision axis. The experimentally observed ordering of the directed flow of baryons, pions, and antibaryons can be described as resulting from the expansion of a baryon inhomogeneous fireball. An uneven distribution of baryons in the transverse plane leads to a difference in the collective push for protons and antiprotons. Precise measurements of the collective flow of identified particles as a function of rapidity could serve as a strong constraint on mechanism of baryon stopping in the early phase of the collision.

We present some details of the new model of the quantum harmonic oscillator that is semiconfined due to a specific change of its mass by position. We succeeded in solving exactly the Schrödinger equation corresponding to this model. Moreover, we found its dynamical symmetry algebra and could compute analytically its Kirkwood, Husimi and Wigner joint quasiprobability functions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The term θϵμνρσFμνFρσ, when added to the electromagnetic Lagrangian - 1 16πFμνFμν, does not change the signature of the Lagrangian. Actually, it increases the part with negative kinetic energy term at the spatial infinity. During the grinding process of metal machine parts requiring a high degree of smoothness, the use of diamond-surfaced grinding tools, specialized grinding stones, or high-hardness metals are common choices. However, during grinding, surface tool damage or misalignment between grinding surfaces can cause defects such as cracks, scratches, or complete surface destruction. Detecting small scratches is one of the biggest challenges due to their size and distribution, making it difficult to quickly identify them using the human eye. Automated systems, on the other hand, struggle to highlight scratches because automatic optical lighting systems face strong reflections from the metal surface, especially cylindrical surfaces after being polished. As a result, the images obtained lack controlled reflection positions and contrast between normal and scratched areas, leading to inefficiency in detecting these scratches. In this study, we propose an optical system combined with lighting techniques to highlight scratches on the surface of a cylindrical machine part after polishing, thereby detecting and classifying these defects to make pass-fail decisions in practical production line applications. © 2025 Institute of physics Publishing. What can one learn about Fe-Cr alloys using Mössbauer spectroscopy?

Applications of the Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS) in the investigation of Fe-Cr alloys are reviewed. A high sensitivity of the hyperfine magnetic field to the presence of Cr atoms in the vicinity of the probe Fe atoms permits quantitative investigation of various aspects related both to the crystallographic as well as to the magnetic phase diagram of this alloy system. Concerning the former, presented is the relevance of MS for determining borders of the miscibility gap and kinetics of the phase decomposition, distinguishing between nucleation and growth and spinodal decomposition, identifying the sigma-phase and studying kinetics of its precipitation. Regarding the magnetic phase diagram, MS is useful for determining the Curie, the Néel and the spin-freezing temperature, hence studying paramagnetic→ferromagnetic, paramagnetic→antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic→spin-glass transitions. An effect of different heat treatments, strain and irradiation with various particles on a distribution of Cr atoms in the Fe matrix is demonstrated, too. For α-FeCr alloys relevance of MS for determining changes in spin and charge densities at Fe-sites induced by neighboring Cr atoms is illustrated, as well as its usefulness in studying changes caused by a high-temperature sulphidation and oxidation. Concerning properties of σ-FeCr alloys the application of MS for determining the Curie and Debye temperature is reviewed. Application of MS to study an effect of magnetism on the lattice dynamics of Fe atoms in σ-FeCr is also exemplified. Using experimental results related to the biosorption of Fe(III) by activated carbon derived from olive pit waste, we developed and evaluated four artificial neural network (ANN) models in this study, namely MLP-ANN, RBF-ANN, GR-ANN, and PSO-ANN, to predict the removal efficiency of Fe(III) during the adsorption process. The purpose of these models was to forecast the effect of the following five important operational variables: the initial concentration, time, stirring speed, temperature, and biosorbent dose. We conducted a thorough assessment of the performance of these models and compared their ability to predict the removal capacity. Several statistical metrics have been used to quantify the quality of the different models. The results calculated by the machine learning models were analyzed and compared with the experimental results. The obtained values of the coefficient of determination were 0.9997 for the PSO-ANN model, 0.991 for the GR-ANN model, 0.983 for the RBF-ANN model, and 0.837 for the MLP-ANN model concerning the removal efficiency. All the studied models are able to accurately predict the adsorbed quantity. ANOVA analysis was used to evaluate the effect of the parameters inherent to the PSO-ANN model. The PSO-ANN model proves to be a powerful tool for estimating the efficiency of Fe(III) ion removal. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024. corrected publication 2024.

In recent years, self-assembling de novo-designed peptides have attracted increasing attention as materials for constructing submicrometer-scale structures. We have previously conducted structure-activity relationship studies on the BXBA-20 series of 20-residue amphiphilic peptides containing 2-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) [Higashimoto, Y. et al. (1999) J. Biochem. 125, 705-712;Hara, T. et al. (2001) J. Biochem. 130, 749-755;Taira, J. et al. (2010) J. Pept. Sci. 16, 607-612]. These peptides share the common sequence Ac-(Aib-Xxx-Aib-Ala)₅-NH₂, where the introduction of a hydrophilic amino acid at the Xxx position results in the formation of a hydrophilic face on one side of the helix. Among them, some peptides exhibited weak intermolecular association and interactions with lipid membranes, though none demonstrated the ability to form submicrometer-scale structures through self-assembly. In this study, we present BKBL-20, a new member of this peptide series incorporating leucine on the hydrophobic face and lysine on the hydrophilic face. Circular dichroism spectroscopy indicated strong association in buffer, while hemolysis assays revealed significant membrane disruption. Transmission electron microscopy further confirmed the formation of ordered fibrous or array-like structures. These findings suggest that BKBL-20 successfully combines self-assembly and membrane-disruptive functions. © 2025 The Authors. Published by American Chemical Society.

In modern data analysis and data mining, there are many applicable regression procedures, however, the most frequently used ones include classical linear regression, decision trees, random forest model, support vector method and artificial neural networks. Most of these algorithms are powerful approximation tools that can model the complex relationships and patterns in data. One of the reasons for redundant structure within such procedures is the use of a too-large feature vector for a given task. This paper aimed to investigate and compare the selected methods of significance analysis and then reduce the size of the feature vector through supervised learning models. Based on the obtained results, it seems that the Shap analysis and the Sobol global sensitivity analysis method are the most reliable methods for determining the significance of feature vector elements and thus for reducing the feature vector dimension in regression problems.

Recently, many corpora have been developed that contain multiple annotations of various linguistic phenomena, from morphological categories of words through the syntactic structure of sentences to discourse and coreference relations in texts. Discussions are ongoing on an appropriate annotation scheme for a large amount of diverse information. In our contribution we express our conviction that a multilayer annotation scheme offers to view the language system in its complexity and in the interaction of individual phenomena and that there are at least two aspects that support such a scheme: (i) A multilayer annotation scheme makes it possible to use the annotation of one layer to design the annotation of another layer(s) both conceptually and in a form of a pre-annotation procedure or annotation checking rules. (ii) A multilayer annotation scheme presents a reliable ground for corpus studies based on features across the layers. These aspects are demonstrated on the case of the Prague Dependency Treebank. Its multilayer annotation scheme withstood the test of time and serves well also for complex textual annotations, in which earlier morpho-syntactic annotations are advantageously used. In addition to a reference to the previous projects that utilise its annotation scheme, we present several current investigations. © 2022 European Language Resources Association (ELRA).
