Magnetic properties and spin polarization of Co2MnSi Heusler alloy thin films epitaxially grown on GaAs(001)

Single-crystalline Co2MnSi Heusler alloy films have been grown on GaAs(001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The best crystallographic quality of the Co2MnSi films has been achieved after deposition at 450 K. The films exhibit in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with the easy axis of magnetization along the [1-10] direction superimposed with a fourfold anisotropy with the easy axis along ⟨110⟩. Spin-resolved photoemission measurements of the single-crystalline Co2MnSi films reveal a spin-resolved density of states that is in qualitative agreement with recent band structure calculations. The spin polarization of photoelectrons close to the Fermi level is found to be at most 12%, in contrast to the predicted half-metallic behavior. We suggest that these discrepancies may be attributed to a partial chemical disorder in the Co2MnSi lattice.

Besides the fine spatial resolution inherent in polymer gel-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) dosimetry, the method also features the potential for multiple measurements of varying sensitive volume in a single experiment by integrating results in MRI voxels of finite dimensions (i.e., in plane resolution by slice thickness). This work exploits this feature of polymer gel dosimetry to propose an experimental technique for relative output factor (OF) measurements of small radiosurgical beams. Two gel vials were irradiated with a 5 and 30 mm diameter 6 MV radiosurgery beam and MR scanned with the same slice thickness and three different in plane resolutions. Using this experimental data set, 5 mm OF measurements with the PinPoint ion chamber are simulated by integrating results over a sensitive volume equal to that of the chamber. Results are found in agreement within experimental uncertainties with actual PinPoint measurements verifying the validity of the proposed experimental procedure. The polymer gel data set is subsequently utilized for OF measurements of the 5 mm beam with varying sensitive volume to discuss the magnitude of detector volume averaging effects. Seeking to correct for volume averaging, results are extrapolated to zero sensitive volume yielding a 5 mm OF measurement of (0.665%). This result compares reasonably with corresponding ionometric and radiographic film measurements of this work and corresponding, limited, data in the literature. Overall, results suggest that polymer gel dosimetry coupled with the proposed experimental procedure helps overcome not only tissue-equivalence and beam perturbation implications but also volume averaging and positioning uncertainties which constitute the main drawback in small radiosurgical beam dosimetry. © 2005 American Association of Physicists in Medicine.

In the past few years the NA50 experiment carried out a comprehensive study of heavy quarkonia production, both in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. In particular, data from p-A collisions have been collected in order to estimate the size of the absorption of quarkonia states in cold nuclear matter. Along with the studies on J/ψ and ψ, NA50 measured for the first time ϒ production at 450 GeV incident energy ( s 29☎ 1 GeV) on five nuclear targets (Be, Al, Cu, Ag and W) in the dimuon decay channel. We report here results on the cross section at mid-rapidity and the nuclear dependence of ϒ and Drell-Yan production. We analyzed as well the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions for the ϒ meson. The results are compared with previous measurements and with the predictions of theoretical models.

An arbitrary pattern exposure system has been developed by employing a liquid crystal display (LCD) with 1600 × 1200 pixels for the formation of projection images in place of a conventional reticle. The minimum pattern size becomes 11.5 μm, which corresponds to the aperture size of each pixel on the LCD. For the purpose of quick turnaround time (TAT), the exposure system was directly connected to the circuit design system with the transmission control protocol/internet protocol network. From the experimental results on patterning of a typical electronic circuit data with the area of 46 × 46 mm, it was confirmed that the TAT from the output of design data to the finish of the exposure becomes less than 28 min. By using this system, reduction of the production cost in the printed wiring boards fabrication is expected. © 2005 IEEE.

We report on the multichannel IC (RX64DTH) designed for position sensitive X-ray measurements with silicon strip detectors and dedicated to medical imaging applications. This integrated circuit has a binary readout architecture and possibility of selecting energy window for measured signals. The design has been realized in 0.8 μm CMOS process. The core of the RX64DTH chip consists of 64 readout channels. The single channel is built of four basic blocks: charge sensitive preamplifier, shaper, two independent discriminators and two independent 20-bit counters. Each readout channel counts pulses, which are above low discriminator threshold and independently pulses above high discriminator threshold. The energy resolution in such architecture is limited by noise of a single channel and by channel to channel threshold spread. We present noise and matching performance of a single chip and the performance of 384-channel system built of silicon strip detector and six RX64DTH chips. In the 384-channel system an equivalent noise charge of about 200 el. rms has been achieved for shaper peaking time of 0.8 μs and the strip capacitance of 3 pF. The deviation of discriminator thresholds for the whole system is only 87 el. rms. The obtained results show clearly that the energy resolution and uniformity of analog parameters (noise, gain, offsets) are sufficient for medical diagnostic applications such as dual energy mammography and angiography. © 2004 IEEE.

In this paper, we describe the simulation and experimental results of electroplated microheater for microfluidic-base polymerase chain reaction (PCR) device. This work used finite element analysis to simulate the temperature characteristics of a PCR device. The device consists of a reaction chamber using polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) with encapsulated microhearter made of a nickel resistor wire. Design of the microheater mask layout using Tanner L-edit. Microheater can be made by low cost electroplating process. The temperature in the experiment was shown heating and cooling rates were 0.9 /spl deg/C/s and 0.8 /spl deg/C/s respectively. The thermal distribution of the device was also studied through finite elements modeling then compare to the experimental results.

Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance Computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. We present results obtained with a single photon counting system of 384 silicon microstrips (100 micron pitch) equipped with six RX64DTH ASICs including charge preamplifier, shaper, two discriminators and two 20-bit counters for each channel. The energy resolution of the system was determined to be of 0.72 keV (rms) with a spread of threshold setting of 0.32 keV for the whole 384-channel module (at energies of 29-33 keV), indicating its excellent potential for dual-energy imaging. Images of a mammographic test object made of PMMA, polyethylene and water were taken in scanning mode (strips parallel to incoming X-rays) under the dual energy X-ray beams. Images were subsequently processed with the dual energy subtraction technique (Alvarez and Macovski, 1976). Experimental results agree well with MCNP simulations of the mammographie phantom and demonstrate the capability of our system to obtain contrast cancellation between two kinds of materials, thereby enhancing the visibility of small features in the third material. © 2004 IEEE.
