A multitude of individuals across the globe grapple with motor disabilities. Neural prosthetics utilizing Brain-computer Interface (BCI) technology exhibit promise for improving motor rehabilitation outcomes. The intricate nature of EEG data poses a significant hurdle for current BCI systems. Recently, a qualitative repository of EEG signals tied to both upper and lower limb execution of motor and motor imagery tasks has been unveiled. Despite this, the productivity of the Machine Learning (ML) Models that were trained on this dataset was alarmingly deficient, and the evaluation framework seemed insufficient. To enhance outcomes, robust feature engineering (signal processing) methodologies are implemented. A collection of time domain, frequency domain, and wavelet-derived features was obtained from 16-channel EEG signals, and the Maximum Relevance Minimum Redundancy (MRMR) approach was employed to identify the four most significant features. For classification K Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, and Naïve Bayes models were implemented with these selected features, evaluating their effectiveness through metrics such as testing accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 Score. By leveraging SVM with a Gaussian Kernel, a remarkable maximum testing accuracy of 92.50% for motor activities and 95.48% for imagery activities is achieved. These results are notably more dependable and gratifying compared to the previous study, where the peak accuracy was recorded at 74.36%. This research work provides an in-depth analysis of the MI Limb EEG dataset and it will help in designing and developing simple, cost-effective and reliable BCI systems for neuro-rehabilitation. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Protein Orientation and Polymer Phase Separation Induced by Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Tacticity

Stereochemistry may affect physicochemical and biological properties of polymers films that are important for their applications, including substrates for the fabrication of protein microarrays. In this study, we investigated the effect of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) tacticity on the interaction of polymer thin films with proteins and on the phase separation process in blends with poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PtBMA). Thin films of isotactic, atactic and syndiotactic PMMA were studied for topography, surface chemistry and protein adsorption. Secondary ion mass spectrometry and contact angle measurements revealed a lower surface exposure of polar ester functional groups for iso-PMMA, resulting in reduced adsorption of albumin and fibrinogen proteins. We also showed that changes in surface chemistry alter the orientation of proteins adsorbed on iso-PMMA through hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. In addition, blends composed of PMMA and PtBMA, both of different tacticities, were investigated in terms of the protein microarray fabrication. The 2-dimensional domain structure was obtained by a phase separation process for at-PtBMA blends prepared on silicon substrates modified with amino-silane. Finally, for an isotropic and regular polymer pattern of iso-PMMA/at-PtBMA, the possibility of protein microarrays formation on this blend was demonstrated, showing selective adsorption to PtBMA domains and perfect mirroring of the polymer patterns. © 2024, The Authors. Significance of Benthic Alkalinity Flux Resulting from Anoxic Diagenesis in a Marine Basin with High River Inflow

Alkalinity generation in marine sediments and its release into the water column is significant in terms of seawater's ability to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, especially in shelf seas where due to the shallow depth sediment processes can have a considerable impact on seawater chemistry. Our study considering different types of anoxic shelf sediments shows that benthic alkalinity flux depends on the season, bottom water oxygenation and availability of oxidants for organic matter mineralization, making it highly variable spatially and temporally. Benthic alkalinity fluxes were determined in the southern part of the Baltic Sea - Gdańsk Basin, which is strongly influenced by inflow from the land along with the Vistula, the second largest river flowing into the Baltic Sea. The obtained benthic flux of alkalinity from anaerobic sediments was 1911±744 µmol m-2 day-1, while the alkalinity load entering the Gulf of Gdańsk from sediments was 0.70±0.27 Mmol km-2 yr-1. This means that anaerobic sediments have similar, if not greater, potential to be a significant source of alkalinity in seawater in the southern Baltic Sea than the soil in the catchment. As eutrophication increases and anaerobic bottom areas spread, the sediment zone where methanogenesis occurs can be expected to expand. In this case, we argue that the role of sediment as an internal source of alkalinity will increase. The oxidation of increased amounts of methane will result in a high benthic flux of dissolved inorganic carbon to the bottom water, contributing to the buffer capacity of seawater and counteracting the acidification resulting from the increase in the partial pressure of CO2 in the atmosphere and water. © 2024, The Authors. We study the propagation of a domain wall (kink) of the 4 model in a radially symmetric environment defined by a gravity source. This source introduces a Schwarzschild-like geometry. We introduce an effective model that accurately describes the dynamics of the kink center. This description works well even outside the perturbation region, i.e., even for large masses of the gravitating object. We observed that such a spherical domain wall surrounding a star-type object inevitably "collapses", i.e., shrinks in radius towards the origin and offer an understanding of the latter phenomenology. Tensor network simulation of the quantum Kibble-Zurek quench from the Mott to the superfluid phase in the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model

Quantum simulations of the Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) at commensurate filling can follow spreading of correlations after a sudden quench for times long enough to estimate their propagation velocities. In this work we perform tensor network simulation of the quantum Kibble-Zurek (KZ) ramp from the Mott towards the superfluid phase in the square lattice BHM and demonstrate that even relatively short ramp/quench times allow one to test the power laws predicted by the KZ mechanism (KZM). They can be verified for the correlation length and the excitation energy but the most reliable test is based on the KZM scaling hypothesis for the single-particle correlation function: scaled correlation functions for different quench times evaluated at the same scaled time collapse to the same scaling function of the scaled distance. The scaling of the space and time variables is done according to the KZ power laws.

Quantum versus semi-classical signatures of correlated triple ionization in Dalitz plots

We investigate correlated three-electron escape in Ne when driven by an intense, infrared laser field. We do so by employing a reduced-dimensionality quantum-mechanical model and two three-dimensional semi-classical models. One semi-classical model is a recently developed one that accounts with effective coulomb potentials for the interaction between two bound electrons (ECBB) while it fully accounts for all other interactions. The other semi-classical model is the Heisenberg one, which effectively accounts for the interaction of each electron with the core via a soft-core potential. We identify and compare the signatures of correlated three-electron escape for both quantum and semi-classical models on Dalitz plots and find a better agreement between the quantum and the ECBB model. We also show that a central "spot" on the Dalitz plots is reproduced by all models. Using the ECBB model we associate this "spot" with the direct triple ionization pathway and argue this to be the case also for the quantum model. Devising a simple classical model that accounts for the direct pathway of triple ionization, we show that the width of this spot in the Dalitz plots solely depends on the time of tunnel-ionization. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

In this work, a neuro-fuzzy hybrid deep learning model is presented for finding human-readable relationships between input features with the help of nilpotent fuzzy logic and multi-criteria decision making (MCDM). In the neural network a parameterized, differentiable activation function is used, where the parameter is determined by gradient descent. The goal is to find the optimal regularization value by applying the deep learning model to classification problems from the UCI Machine Learning Repository. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper deals with storytelling aspects of computer games. A new approach to automatic story generation based on graph modelling is proposed. Godot Engine for visualization of output stories is used. In our research the plot is represented by a specific graph called the layered graph composed of story building blocks, namely layer of locations, layer of characters, layer of items, layer of narration and plot dependencies. An appropriate set of graph rules (productions) stored in JSON format is a generative tool for the building blocks. Graph rules are internal representation of actions which can be taken by the hero of the story. A sequence of the rules from start to end can describe the whole gameplay of one player or can be generated in automatic way as a possible gameplay. All such sequences of the rules create the space of all potential gameplays. Every rule corresponds to a certain animation made in Godot Engine. It allows to visualize every possible story, represented by sequence of rules, by seamless animation. Given a rule, animation is based on graphic assets corresponding to the rule nodes of the layered graph. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Climatic Sensitivity and the Growth Prospects of Silver Fir and European Larch in the Carpathians in the Light of Observed Climate Changes

One consequence of climate change is the rapid extinction of spruce monocultures in the Carpathians. Therefore, the need has arisen to replace spruce with other highly productive species that ensure the stability and biodiversity of mountain forests, such as the Abies alba and Larix decidua. These co-occurring conifers show different successional and phenological characteristics: L. decidua is a light-demanding species that dominates in the early successional stages, while A. alba is a moderately shade-tolerant tree. This study attempts to identify climatic factors that determine the tree-ring width of fir and larch in order to assess the growth prospects of these species in the context of the ongoing climate change. Tree-ring width chronologies of 42 sub-populations of fir and 36 of larch from the area of the Western Carpathians were used. Regional growth patterns for each species were used to estimate the relationship between temperature/precipitation and radial growth. Linear correlation analyses and nonlinear Random Forest models were used. Fir growth was significantly positively influenced by the high temperature of January–March and July and the high precipitation of February and July of the year of tree-ring formation. Larch growth was positively affected by the high temperature of May and the low precipitation of April and September of the year of tracheid formation. Unlike larch, fir growth increased if May and June of the preceding year were warm. The dominant climatic factor influencing fir growth was February temperature, whereas larch growth was influenced mainly by the May temperature of the year of tree-ring formation. Most of the recently observed changes in climatic factors that are important for the growth of both species are favorable.
