Certifying nonlocal properties of noisy quantum operations

We provide a unified framework to certify nonlocal properties of quantum channels from the correlations obtained in measurement protocols. Our approach gathers and extends fully- and semidevice independent methods for this purpose. We study the effect of different models of dephasing noise, some of which are shown to generate nonlocality and entanglement in special cases. In the extreme case of complete dephasing, the measurement protocols discussed yield particularly simple tests to certify nonlocality. These are based on the relations between bipartite quantum channels and their classical analogs: bipartite stochastic matrices defining conditional distributions. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. The second law of thermodynamics imposes a fundamental asymmetry in the flow of events. The so-called thermodynamic arrow of time introduces an ordering that divides the system's state space into past, future, and incomparable regions. In this work, we analyze the structure of the resulting thermal cones, i.e., sets of states that a given state can thermodynamically evolve to (the future thermal cone) or evolve from (the past thermal cone). Specifically, for a d-dimensional classical state of a system interacting with a heat bath, we find explicit construction of the past thermal cone and the incomparable region. Moreover, we provide a detailed analysis of their behavior based on thermodynamic monotones given by the volumes of thermal cones. Results obtained apply also to other majorization-based resource theories (such as that of entanglement and coherence), since the partial ordering describing allowed state transformations is then the opposite of the thermodynamic order in the infinite temperature limit. Finally, we also generalize the construction of thermal cones to account for probabilistic transformations.

Context. Strong lensing systems, expected to be abundantly discovered by next-generation surveys, provide a powerful tool for studying cosmology and galaxy evolution. The coupling between galaxy structure and cosmology through distance ratios makes examining the evolution of lensing galaxy mass density profiles essential for advancing both fields. Aims. We introduce a novel, dark energy-model-independent method to investigate the mass density slopes of lensing galaxies and their redshift evolution using an extended power-law (EPL) model. Methods. We adopt a non-parametric approach based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) trained on Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa) data to reconstruct the distance ratios of strong lensing systems. These reconstructed ratios are compared with theoretical predictions to estimate the evolution of EPL model parameters. The analysis is performed at three levels - combined sample, individual lenses, and binned groups - to ensure robust estimates of the EPL parameters. Results. A negative evolutionary trend of mass density power-law exponent with increasing redshift is observed across different analysis levels. Assuming a triangular prior for the anisotropy of lensing galaxies, we find evidence for redshift evolution of the mass density slope, quantified as ∂γ/∂z = −0.20 ± 0.12. Conclusions. This study confirms that the redshift evolution of matter density slopes in lensing galaxies can be determined independent of dark energy models at the population level. Using simulations informed by Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Rubin Observatory forecasts, which is expected to identify 100,000 strongly lensed galaxies, we show that spectroscopic follow up of just 10% of these systems can reduce the uncertainty in the redshift evolution coefficient of the total mass density slope (∆∂γ/∂z) to 0.021. Normal-state transport properties (2–300 K) of the polycrystalline series Sn1.03−δ−xInxTe (0≤x≤0.07; δ≤0.0025) were investigated by means of electrical resistivity, thermopower, Hall effect, and thermal conductivity measurements. The distortion of the valence-band structure by the In-induced resonant level (RL) has a profound influence on the evolution of the normal-state properties with x and on the emergence of superconductivity evidenced by specific-heat measurements down to 0.35 K. In addition to a nearly 40-fold increase in the residual electrical resistivity ρ0 on going from x=0.0 to 0.05, the thermopower α shows a nonlinear, complex behavior as a function of both temperature and x. While Hall measurements indicate a dominant holelike response across the entire composition and temperature ranges, α changes sign below about 100 K and remains negative down to 5 K for 0.0015≤x≤0.0045. Additional measurements under magnetic fields μ0H of up to 14 T further shows that α(μ0H) gradually shifts towards positive values, suggestive of a dominant holelike contribution to α. Superconductivity emerges for x=0.02 at a critical temperature Tc=0.67 K, with Tc increasing with x to reach 1.73 K for x=0.07. The variations in the superconducting parameters with x, notably the specific-heat jump at Tc, confirm the results reported in prior studies and suggests a nontrivial role of the RL on the electron-phonon coupling strength. The striking similarities between this series and the canonical resonant system Pb1−xTlxTe provide an excellent experimental opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the close interplay between resonant level, anomalous transport properties, and superconductivity.

FEASIBILITY STUDIES OF DARK PHOTON SEARCHES WITH THE J-PET DETECTOR

The positronium, a bound state of electron and positron is a unique system to perform highly precise tests, due to no hadronic background and precise Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) predictions. Being a system of lepton and antilepton, its properties are precisely described by QED in the Standard Model (SM). The final events topology can be simulated using Monte Carlo techniques. The J-PET detector is a multi-purpose, large acceptance system that is very well-suitable to the studies of positronium decay due to its excellent angular (1o) and timing resolutions. We present preliminary results on the feasibility of searching for Dark Matter (DM) candidates in the decay o-Ps → invisible with the J-PET, which is well suited for the detection of positronium decay products. Toy Monte Carlo simulations have been prepared to incorporate DM decay models to the o-Ps decay expectations in order to assess the detector capabilities to search for such an elusive component of our Universe. © 2024, CC BY.

In this study, we revisit the extraction of parton-to-KS0 hadron fragmentation functions, named FF24-KS0, focusing on both next-to-leading-order and next-to-next-to-leading-order accuracy in perturbative QCD. Our approach involves the analysis of single inclusive electron-positron annihilation (SIA) data. The two key improvements are, on the one hand, the incorporation of the latest experimental data from the BESIII experiment and, on the other hand, the adoption of neural networks in the fitting procedure. To address experimental uncertainties, the Monte Carlo method is employed. Our investigation also explores the impact of hadron mass corrections on the description of SIA data, spanning a broad kinematic regime with a particular emphasis on the range of small z values. The theory prediction for KS0 production at both NLO and NNLO accuracy exhibits good agreement with experimental data within their respective uncertainties.

A new method of obtaining a sequence of isolated complex Hadamard matrices (CHM) for dimensions N ≥ 7, based on block-circulant structures, is presented. We discuss, several analytic examples resulting from a modification of the Sinkhorn algorithm. In particular, we present new isolated matrices of orders 9, 10 and 11, which elements are not roots of unity, and also several new multiparametric families of order 10. We note novel connections between certain eight-dimensional matrices and provide new insights towards classification of CHM for N ≥ 7. The β decay of one-neutron halo nucleus Be11 was investigated using the Warsaw Optical Time Projection Chamber (OTPC) detector to measure β-delayed charged particles. The results of two experiments are reported. In the first one, carried out in LNS Catania, the absolute branching ratio for β-delayed α emission was measured by counting incoming Be11 ions stopped in the detector and the observed decays with the emission of α particle. The result of 3.27(46)% is in good agreement with the literature value. In the second experiment, performed at the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN, bunches containing several hundreds of Be11 ions were implanted into the OTPC detector followed by the detection of decays with the emission of charged particles. The energy spectrum of β-delayed α particles was determined in the full energy range. It was analyzed in the R-matrix framework and was found to be consistent with the literature. The best description of the spectrum was obtained assuming that the two 3/2+ and one 1/2+ states in B11 are involved in the transition. The search for β-delayed emission of protons was undertaken. Only the upper limit for the branching ratio for this process of (2.2±0.6stat±0.6sys)×10−6 could be determined. This value is in conflict with the result published by Ayyad et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 082501 (2019)] but does agree with the limit reported by Riisager et al. [Eur. Phys. J. A 56, 100 (2020)].

In this paper we present results of an experiment designed to measure correlation between Galvanic Skin Response – GSR (also: Electrodermal Activity – EDA) and Oculographic (Eye Tracking) data. In the experiment we analyze the participants reactions on changing gameplay modes (changing dynamic and pace of user interaction with the game mechanics). The goal of the analysis is to demonstrate what influence of changing gameplay modes have on physiology (especially spontaneous body response). The gameplay modes used in experiment were chase mode (dynamic) and sneak mode (satisfying). In the experiment we have used Pupil Lab eye-tracker and EDA sensor based on BITalino platform. The game Serial Cleaner by iFun4all was used to conduct the experiment. The experiment resulted in multiple observations. Substantial correlation between participant failure and change of EDA pattern were observed as well as over 10% change in fixations durations. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
