Improved Dwarf Mongoose Optimization for Constrained Engineering Design Problems

This paper proposes a modified version of the Dwarf Mongoose Optimization Algorithm (IDMO) for constrained engineering design problems. This optimization technique modifies the base algorithm (DMO) in three simple but effective ways. First, the alpha selection in IDMO differs from the DMO, where evaluating the probability value of each fitness is just a computational overhead and contributes nothing to the quality of the alpha or other group members. The fittest dwarf mongoose is selected as the alpha, and a new operator ω is introduced, which controls the alpha movement, thereby enhancing the exploration ability and exploitability of the IDMO. Second, the scout group movements are modified by randomization to introduce diversity in the search process and explore unvisited areas. Finally, the babysitter's exchange criterium is modified such that once the criterium is met, the babysitters that are exchanged interact with the dwarf mongoose exchanging them to gain information about food sources and sleeping mounds, which could result in better-fitted mongooses instead of initializing them afresh as done in DMO, then the counter is reset to zero. The proposed IDMO was used to solve the classical and CEC 2020 benchmark functions and 12 continuous/discrete engineering optimization problems. The performance of the IDMO, using different performance metrics and statistical analysis, is compared with the DMO and eight other existing algorithms. In most cases, the results show that solutions achieved by the IDMO are better than those obtained by the existing algorithms.

This paper reviews three main aspects of authentication protocols of Internet of Things (IoT): classifications and limitations, current trends, and opportunities. First, we explore the significance of IoT authentication protocols in ensuring secure communication and the protection of transmitted and received data, focusing on the classifications and associated limitations. Second, we discuss the latest developments and trends, such as using blockchain technology and machine learning to enhance authentication protocols. Third, we highlight the future opportunities, including the development of human-centric authentication designs and improved platform interoperability. At the end of this paper, we provided some insights gained for the new researcher, offering analyses of the trends and challenges in this field, giving recommendations for improving IoT authentication protocols, and emphasizing the need for further research and cooperation to develop advanced security solutions. © 2016 IEEE.

Individuals with hearing impairments often communicate using sign language, which can create communication challenges with hearing individuals who are unfamiliar with sign language. Therefore, the objective of this work is to design, develop and construct a prototype of the hand movement device for translating sign language into text displayed on a screen for individuals with hearing impairments. The developed device is designed to wear on wrist of people with hearing impairments. It uses sEMG sensor to obtain EMG signals, whereas the acceleration data are collected using IMU sensor. The hand movements in 4 gestures (thank, sorry, sad, and lucky) are tested with a data acquisition frequency of 25 Hz for 10 times in each gesture. The results show that the sEMG sensor together with IMU sensor can be used to distinguish those 4 gestures since the signals collected from these sensors show different patterns clearly. Future study will be focused on finding the best position to install the sEMG sensor and testing the developed device with more gestures. ©2023 . IEEE.

Tau protein aggregates inside neurons in the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Because of the enormous number of people suffering from AD, this disease has become one of the world's major health and social problems. The presence of tau lesions clearly correlates with cognitive impairments in AD patients, thus, tau is the target of potential treatments for AD, next to amyloid-beta. The exact mechanism of tau aggregation has not been understood in detail so far;especially little is known about the structural rearrangements of tau aggregates at the growth phase. The research into tau conformation at each step of the aggregation pathway will contribute to the design of effective therapeutic approaches. To follow the secondary structure of individual tau aggregates at the growth phase, we applied tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). The nanospectroscopic approach enabled us to follow the structure of individual aggregates occurring in the subsequent phases of tau aggregation. We applied multivariate data analysis to extract the spectral differences for tau aggregates at different aggregation phases. Moreover, atomic force microscopy (AFM) allowed the tracking of the morphological alterations for species occurring with the progression of tau aggregation. Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) enabled the structural differences between tau protein aggregates to be revealed, specifically tau protofibrils and young fibrils at the level of individual aggregates.

A global issue of the shortage oil and gas resources and an increasing environmental awareness led to the development of starch-based film. Starch-based film offers a lot of advantages such as affordable prices, non-toxic, biodegradable, and easily accessible. However, starch-based film also has several drawbacks which limiting their application such as a poor mechanical properties, moisture sensitivity and high moisture absorption. In order to overcome those drawbacks, a lot of research has been focusing on incorporation of filler to produce a starch-based film with better properties. The work aims are to study the effect of diammonium phosphate and potassium nitrate on the moisture content and water absorption rate of the corn-based films. The corn-based film containing corn starch, plasticizer (distilled water and glycerol) and addition of 5% of each filler (diammonium phosphate and potassium nitrate) were prepared by using the solvent casting method. The effect of diammonium phosphate and potassium nitrate on moisture content and the water absorption rate of the films were investigated. It was found that, adding diammonium phosphate and potassium nitrate into the corn-based film had decreased the moisture content by 6.5% and 6.9% respectively compared to control film with 20%. A corn-based film with diammonium phosphate has 70% of water absorption meanwhile control film (88%) and potassium nitrate (91%). It can be concluded that by adding fillers in corn-based film can improve their moisture content and a lower rate of water absorption (corn-based film with diammonium phosphate) compared to film without filler. Robust multi-label classification via data reconstruction by neighborhood samples augmentation

In multi-label learning, traditional methods try to directly establish mapping functions between samples and their labels. However, such methods may suffer low classification performance due to inherent noise and incoherent representation of samples. Therefore, considering the correlation between samples and their neighbors, as they may share common feature semantics, a multi-label classification method via feature enhancement from neighborhood samples, referred to as DRNSA is proposed. In this method, we construct a Laplacian graph dynamically, by considering the distance of two samples in a projected low rank subspace. With this neighborhood selection strategy, we then build a multi-label classifier via feature enhancement from neighborhood samples. Different from past works that directly build classifiers from samples and their labels, we build a new enhanced data sample which is weighted by its semantically similar neighborhood samples. Thus, our method can obtain better robust subspace in very high noisy data representations. Experiments conducted on cal500, corel5k, corel16k1 and corel16k4 datasets, show a significant out-performance of our DRNSA method over multi-label classification methods, including MLSF, MLFE, BR, PLST, CSSP, CPLST, and FaIE. © The Author(s) 2024.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a multidimensional neurological developmental disorder that includes a wide plethora of mental disorders targeting one's social and behavioral abilities. Gaining a perceptive understanding of a topic like ASD is essential in one's lifespan, whether the symptoms displayed are mild or severely debilitating. Due to the populous size of clinical terms under the disorder's spectrum and the drastic gap between each symptom's severity, the diagnosis of ASD became a long and tribulating task for experts and professionals alike. The purpose of this paper is to present and compare different Machine Learning Classifiers Categorical Boosting, K-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine, Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Naïve Bayes and use their Training Algorithms Train-Test Splitting, K-Folds Cross-Validation to develop a quick and accurate Labeler ASD: 'YES' ? 'NO' for afflicted individuals based on multiple Datasets Generic, Adolescent, Children, Young, Adult, ASD aiming for an early diagnosis and an overall better understanding of the disorder. For each dataset, four Performance Metrics are extracted after applying the 7 ML models and the two training algorithms Accuracy, Precision, Recall, F1-Score. The resulting metrics are then displayed and compared to conclude the most accurate trained model for each dataset and with each of the training algorithms. © 2024 IEEE.

Temporal correlations of the sentiment content in consecutive sentences are studied based on a large corpus of the world-famous literary texts in four major European languages (English, French, German, and Spanish). For quantifying the related characteristics in terms of the Hurst exponents the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) is employed. The results obtained provide a clear indication for the existence of persistent correlations as revealed by the Hurst exponents significantly larger than 1/2 in all the four languages studied. An interesting result that requires a deeper study is the identified fact that in many texts the DFA indicates two different regimes of scaling and thus two different Hurst exponents. In those cases - quite universally - the cross-over occurs at the scale corresponding to about 200 sentences and the Hurst exponents at the scales above this value are even larger which indicates the presence of stronger long-range temporal correlations than those at the shorter scales. © ECMS Enrico Vicario, Romeo Bandinelli, Virginia Fani, Michele Mastroianni (Editors) 2023.

Thermal crosstalk of a compact, low-power, high-speed thermo-optical MZI switch was evaluated using a ring resonator placed nearby. Thermal crosstalk is small enough to maintain sufficient classification accuracy even in a 64 × 64 size optical neural networks, which significantly reduces the integrated circuits footprint compared to conventional micro-heater switches. © 2023 The Japan Society of applied physics.
