Let Vn be a set of n points in the plane and let x ∈/ Vn. An x-loop is a continuous closed curve not containing any point of Vn. We say that two x-loops are non-homotopic if they cannot be transformed continuously into each other without passing through a point of Vn. For n = 2, we give an upper bound eO(√k) on the maximum size of a family of pairwise non-homotopic x-loops such that every loop has fewer than k self-intersections and any two loops have fewer than k intersections. The exponent O(√k) is asymptotically tight. The previous upper bound bound 2(2k)4 was proved by Pach, Tardos, and Tóth [Graph Drawing 2020]. Significant efforts have been made to promote gender equality in higher education (HE) in Europe. Examples include the establishment of the Athena Swan Charter in the UK in 2005 and the 2019 launch of the Irène Curie Fellowship scheme by Eindhoven University of technology. But which initiatives address broader diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) challenges in HE? And which are specifically focused on engineering education? This exploratory study aims to improve our understanding of the ways in which a set of European HE Institutions engaged in engineering education address DEI at an organisation level, and how this is communicated within the public domain. The analysis of online data provided by a purposive sample of institutions is guided by the following research questions (RQ): 1. How is DEI addressed and defined in institution-wide strategic frameworks? 2. How many institutions describe having an institution-wide DEI organization? 3. What specific policies around DEI are being developed, and what areas are mentioned, defined, and prioritized? 4. What structures and resources noted as part of their DEI activities are specific to engineering faculties and departments? 5. What engineering-specific DEI initiatives exist that are not available in the public domain or are not written in English? Our sample is composed of the host institutions of the authors of the paper, and represent different European countries: Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, Portugal, Switzerland, and the UK. Over the years, physiological signals have shown its efficiency in emotion recognition. Galvanic skin response (GSR) is a quantifiable physiological signal generated from the change of skin conductance in response to emotional stimulation. Understanding human emotions through GSR signals can be a challenging task because of the characteristic’s complexity. The current performance on the analysis of GSR signals has yet to be satisfactory due to a lack of detailed evaluation on the performance of features extracted from GSR signals. Previous studies have compared the recognition rates between different physiological signals between electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), and GSR as a group or focused on the performance of emotion recognition using a fusion of signals. This paper presents an evaluation of extracted features specifically from GSR signals from a public dataset named as AMIGOS database. The MATLAB software was used for the simulation. In the study, feature extraction techniques were performed to extract features in time domain and frequency domain features. These features are ranked using the one-way ANOVA method in MATLAB. Several subsets of different number of features based on the type of feature and significance level were formed for optimum selection. The state of art classification algorithm for GSR which is Support Vector Machine (SVM) was employed to evaluate the classification performance using the ranked features. The methodology proposed by this study was able to achieve high accuracy rates that are comparable with existing studies that had employed the same AMIGOS database. This work aims at applying the theory of the component-based normalization for the Jagiellonian PET scanner, currently under development at the Jagiellonian University. In any Positron Emission Tomography acquisition, efficiency along a line-of-response can vary due to several physical and geometrical effects, leading to severe artifacts in the reconstructed image. To mitigate these effects, a normalization coefficient is applied to each line-of-response, defined as the product of several components. Specificity of the Jagiellonian PET scanner geometry is taken into account. The influence of intrinsic defects of 1T-TaS2 on charge density waves (CDW) is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM, STS), angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), and density functional theory (DFT). We identify several types of structural defects and find that most have a local character limited to the single CDW site, with single exception which effectively behaves as a dopant, leading to band bending and affecting multiple neighboring sites. While only one type of defect can be observed by STM topographic imaging, all defects are easily resolved by local density of states (LDOS) mapping with STS. We correlate atomically-resolved STM periodicity of defect-free 1T-TaS2 to top sulfur atoms and introduce tiling of the surface using equiangular hexagon. DFT calculations (with included Coulomb interactions) are used to investigate the electronic structure by introducing sulfur vacancy or substituting sulfur with oxygen. The sulfur vacancy is characterized by metallic properties and is identified as an origin of one of observed experimentally defects. Whereas in the case of the latter, the oxidation of 1T-TaS2 is found to result in the loss of magnetic properties expected in defect-free material. © 2023, CC0.

Effects of growth temperature and reactor pressure on the photoluminescence (PL) properties were investigated. The emission intensity improved significantly when the QWs were grown at 100 Torr, compared to higher pressure growths. The effect of well-width on the luminescence properties was investigated and an optimum well width of 40 Å was determined. Excitation dependent PL measurements revealed no shift in the PL emission wavelength suggesting the absence of electric field in the quantum wells. Spin anticoherent states acquired recently a lot of attention as the most "quantum" states. Some coherent and anticoherent spin states are known as optimal quantum rotosensors. In this work, we introduce a measure of quantumness for orthonormal bases of spin states, determined by the average anticoherence of individual vectors and the Wehrl entropy. In this way, we identify the most coherent and most quantum states, which lead to orthogonal measurements of extreme quantumness. Their symmetries can be revealed using the Majorana stellar representation, which provides an intuitive geometrical representation of a pure state by points on a sphere. Results obtained lead to maximally (minimally) entangled bases in the 2j + 1 dimensional symmetric subspace of the 22j dimensional space of states of multipartite systems composed of 2j qubits. In health care and public health practice, it is critical to settings control practices that are critical to reducing the transmission of infections through cross-contamination. To provide protection from cross-contamination, use and throw gloves are routinely used. However, single-time use and inconsistent sanitization of used gloves remain a large problem and elevate the risk of catching viruses, germs, pathogens, and contaminants. The study reports reusable self-sanitizing gloves via 3D-printing and common hand molding methods. The major contribution is frequent self-sanitization of gloves without any manual intervention. The elastomeric material is used for fabricating gloves and continuous channels are embedded within the elastomeric material that runs through the entire glove surface, covering the front, back, and fingers. Elastomeric material allows the engagement of fingers for gripping objects. While the embedded channel is provided with uniformly spaced openings to eject the sanitizing solution. The glove surface is textured with a porous morphology that acts as mini and micro reservoirs for sterilizing solution ejected through embedded channel opening. The embedded channel is connected to a sanitizing solution storage tank. The incorporation of sanitizing solution storage tank enables its usage over a longer period. This uniquely constructed design of the gloves even assists in the effective sterilization of infected surface that comes in contact with the gloves. The gloves can be customized to improve comfortability by fabricating them from the 3D-printed mound developed based on the palm size of the user. The developed technology can be used by individuals working in hospitals, the transport sector, delivery units, schools, offices, industries, etc. We strongly believe that this technology will be highly useful in minimizing the risk of getting infected through cross-contamination and will help in maintaining hygienic as well as safe surroundings. © 202

Quantum complexity measures the difficulty of realizing a quantum process, such as preparing a state or implementing a unitary. We present an approach to quantifying the thermodynamic resources required to implement a process if the process’s complexity is restricted. We focus on the prototypical task of information erasure, or Landauer erasure, wherein an n-qubit memory is reset to the all-zero state. We show that the minimum thermodynamic work required to reset an arbitrary state, via a complexity-constrained process, is quantified by the state’s complexity entropy. The complexity entropy therefore quantifies a trade-off between the work cost and complexity cost of resetting a state. If the qubits have a nontrivial (but product) Hamiltonian, the optimal work cost is determined by the complexity relative entropy. The complexity entropy quantifies the amount of randomness a system appears to have to a computationally limited observer. Similarly, the complexity relative entropy quantifies such an observer’s ability to distinguish two states. We prove elementary properties of the complexity (relative) entropy and determine the complexity entropy’s behavior under random circuits. Also, we identify information-theoretic applications of the complexity entropy. The complexity entropy quantifies the resources required for data compression if the compression algorithm must use a restricted number of gates. We further introduce a complexity conditional entropy, which arises naturally in a complexity-constrained variant of information-theoretic decoupling. Assuming that this entropy obeys a conjectured chain rule, we show that the entropy bounds the number of qubits that one can decouple from a reference system, as judged by a computationally bounded referee.
