Three-phase shunt active power filter (APF) is often used to compensate the harmonic and reactive current derived from non-linear load. But many non-ideal factors, such as the limited bandwidth of output current loop and the time lag of signal sensing circuit and reference current generation etc, will deteriorate the compensation effect. Proportion-Integral (PI) controller cannot be used simply to control the output current without any steady error due to its limited current tracking capability. A novel output current control architecture in the synchronous rotating frame with ordinary PI and advanced repetitive controller (RC) in parallel is put forward in this paper to enhance the compensation characteristic of three-phase shunt APF. The advanced repetitive controller in parallel is used to eliminate the steady current tracking error caused by cyclic disturbance signal to improve the compensation precision of APF, while the ordinary PI controller is used to ensure the dynamic response performance of APF. The feasibility of this output current controller architecture is verified completely by theoretic analysis and experimental results in detail. ©2010 IEEE.

Performing laparoscopic surgery requires several skills which have never been required for conventional open surgery, surgeons experience difficulties in learning and mastering these techniques. Various training methods and metrics have been developed in order to assess and improve surgeon's operative abilities. While these training metrics are currently widely being used, skill evaluation methods are still far from being objective in the regular laparoscopic skill education. This study proposes a methodology of defining a processing model to objectively evaluate surgical performance and skill expertise in the routine laparoscopic training course. Our approach is based on the analysis of kinematic data describing the movements of surgeon's upper limbs. An ultra-miniaturized wearable motion capture system (Waseda Bioinstrumentation system WB-3), therefore, has been developed to measure and analyze these movements. The skill evaluation model was trained by using the subjects' motion features acquired from WB-3 system and further validated to classify the expertise levels of the subjects with different laparoscopic experience. Experimental results show that, the proposed methodology can be efficiently used both for quantitative assessment of surgical performance, and for the discrimination between expert surgeons and novices. © 2010 IEEE.

Real-time tracking of human body motion is an important technology in synthetic environments, robotics, and other human-computer interaction applications. This paper presents an ultra-miniaturized inertial measurement unit (IMU) named WB-3 for real-time attitude estimation of human limb segments. The WB-3 IMU is provided with a 32-bit microcontroller and 9-axis inertial sensors (miniaturized MEMS accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer). The quaternion-based Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) was implemented for the sensor fusion to retrieve the attitude of the human segment. An upper body motion capture system with 12 WB-3 IMUs was elaborated for tracking human movements in real time scenarios. ©2010 IEEE.

Mastication analysis can provide an objective basis for studying and diagnosing jaw musculoskeletal disorders. Therefore, the use and development of devices for quantitatively measuring and analyzing jaw movement have become very popular in the consulting room. This paper proposes a simple to be used jaw tracking prototype by using the new miniaturized wireless Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) named WB-4. The WB-4 IMU primarily contains a mother board, a Bluetooth module and a Li-Polymer battery. The mother board is provided with a microcontroller and 9-axis inertial sensors (miniaturized MEMS accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer) to measure the jaw motion. The data transmission between WB-4 and PC is based on the Bluetooth module to realize the wireless communication. The IMU's extremely reduced weight and size allows it to be easily attached to mandible during normal mastication tests without physical restriction to the subjects. Three pilot experiments for mastication analysis of chewing gum were elaborated. A group of 9 healthy subjects kindly participated in the experiment. The preliminary results show that WB-4 IMU can efficiently evaluate the jaw movement and mastication pattern of different subjects, which could provide quantitative information to the doctors for the diagnosing and clinical treatment of different jaw diseases. ©2010 IEEE.

For a class of high-order stochastic nonlinear systems which are neither necessarily feedback linearizable nor affine in the control variables without the strict triangular conditions, this paper studies the problem of state-feedback stabilization for the first time. The main contribution of this paper is the development of a systematic design approach for stochastic nonlinear systems in the absence of triangular conditions. This methodology enables us to remove the strict triangular conditions which have been the common assumption for global stabilization, and leads to a new result combining and generalizing the previous work. Finally, an illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control design methodology. © 2010 AACC.

The unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) are developed to extended target tracking problem for high resolution sensors. The nonlinear Kalman filters are based on an ellipsoidal model, which is proposed to exploit sensor measurement of target extent. The ellipsoidal model can provide extra information to enhance tracking accuracy, data association performance, and target identification. In contrast to the most commonly used extended Kalman filter (EKF), the UKF and EnKF provide more accurate and reliable estimation performance, due to the presence of high nonlinearity of the model. Correspondingly, the EnKF has lower computational complexity than the UKF. An interacting multiple model (IMM) technique is combined with the filters to adapt the target maneuver and motion mode switching problem which is vital for nonlinear filtering. The developed IMM-UKF and IMM-EnKF algorithms on extended target tracking problem are validated and evaluated by computer simulations. © 2010 AACC.

The reduced-order ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is introduced to the problem of state estimation for nonlinear large-scale systems. The filter reduction based on both the singular value decomposition (SVD) and the Cholesky decomposition provide for reduced-order square-root EnKF. To solve the filter reduction, the EnKF algorithm is modified to obtain members of measurement ensemble from uncorrelated sensors in the system but not a Monte Carlo method, and the performances of the reduced-order EnKF under different conditions are investigated. Simulation shows that the Cholesky-factorizationbased reduced-order EnKF is superior to the SVD-based and offer much advantage in terms of estimation performance. © 2010 AACC.

The unscented Kalman-Bucy filter (UKBF) is developed to nonlinear continuous-time systems with multiple delayed measurements. An explicit and simpler solution to the unscented Kalman-Bucy filtering problem is presented for such systems. The approach applied is the reorganized innovation analysis. The obtained UKBF is given in terms of Riccati differential equations. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the proposed approach. © 2010 AACC.

This paper proposes a new approximation scheme which is an extension of the well-established Charef′s approximation method. The method relaxes the constraints on the locations of pole-zero pairs of the approximation system, which provides more flexibility and space for approximation system to approach the approximated system as possible. The approximation system based on a optimization process perform not only a good gain fit but a good phase fit. The benefits from using the proposed scheme are illustrated by numerical examples in frequency domains.

The short term load forecasting plays a significant role in the management of power system supply for countries and regions, in particular in cases of insufficient electric energy for increased needs. A back-propagation artificial neural-network (BP-ANN) genetic algorithm (GA) based optimizing technique for improved accuracy of predictions short term loads is proposed. With GA's optimizing and BP-ANN's dynamic capacity, the weighted GA optimization is realized by selection, crossing and mutation operations. The performance of the proposed technique has been tested using load time-series from a real-world electrical power system. Its prediction has been compared to those of obtained by only backpropagation based neural-network techniques. Simulation results demonstrated that the here proposed technique possesses superior performance thus guarantees better forecasting. © 2010 IEEE.
