Dust generated at an electric arc furnace during steel production industry is still not a solved problem. Electric arc furnace dust (EAF) is a hazardous solid waste. Sintering of well-prepared briquetted mixtures in a shaft furnace is one of possible methods of EAFD utilisation. Simultaneously some metal oxides from exhaust gases can be separated. In this way, various metals are obtained, particularly zinc is recovered. As a result, zinc-free briquettes are received with high iron content which can be used in the steelmaking process. The purpose of the research was selecting the appropriate chemical composition of briquettes of the required strength and coke content necessary for the reduction of zinc oxide in a shaft furnace. Based on the results of the research the composition of the briquettes was selected. The best binder hydrated lime and sugar molasses and the range of proper moisture of mixture to receive briquettes of high mechanical strength were also chosen and tested. Additionally, in order to determine the thermal stability for the selected mixtures for briquetting thermal analysis was performed. A technological line of briquetting was developed to apply in a steelworks.

Fabrication of artificial blood vessels in micro scale significantly benefits the regeneration of functional human vascular networks. In this paper, we develop an efficient multi-microrobotic system with an innovative motorized sample holder (MSH) and two manipulators. Air is injected into the solution through a glass pipette fixed on one manipulator to create bubbles. These bubbles conduct a regular rising movement, which is utilized to assemble the 2D ring-shaped microgels fabricated in a simple micro fluidic device. With this novel bubble-based method and the robotic system, we achieve the automation of the assembly. A 1.2 mm long vascular-like microtube with an outer diameter of 200 μm is fabricated. The whole process of the bubble-based assembly is visually observed and analyzed with side view. Key parameters are characterized to improve the assembly. Results show that the automated bubble-based assembly success rate is 100% and average time cost of assembling every microgel is as low as 3.25s.

We propose a novel flow control method to realize flow regulation and valveless flow switching in a microfluidic network. The proposed controller enables precise regulation of flow rates (or velocity fields) in micro-channels regardless of model uncertainties such as cross-sectional area and microchannel configuration. The controller can also minimize the pressure exerted on the microfluidic chip. The proposed system can dramatically improve performances of flow regulation and can overcome the limitations of conventional pump systems for microfluidic devices.

There has recently been a significant increase in the number of publications on and applications of bioelectric signals for diagnostic purposes. While the use of ECG (electrocardiography) is not surprising, the use of signals from registration of brain activity (EEG) and muscles activity (EMG) still finds new applications in various fields. The authors focus on the use of EMG signals for estimating hand grip force. Currently, EMG signals are broadly used in limb rehabilitation after severe injuries, surgeries, long immobilizations. Such parameters as maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) used for that purpose do not enable comparison of the forces generated by the muscles, for example, of two different people. It is connected, inter alia, with individual features of the studied person, as well as with a significant scatter of the measured EMG values for the same muscle, e.g. on different days of EMG measurements. The paper presents results of preliminary research whose final effect is to develop a procedure allowing force estimation in force units and estimation of the accuracy of the results. A series of tests was performed on two people. The tests showed the most important elements influencing disturbance of homogeneity of the obtained measurements with the same stimulation of the muscle. This article explores the influence of the concentrated carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) gas on the different Phase Shift Keying (PSK) modulations used for Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) links. In this work, the OWC consisted of a laser diode, a photodetector, and a transmission medium. The Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) unit created and evaluated the PSK modulations. This unit modulated the laser diode on the transmitter side and demodulated the data which were received by the photodetector on the receiver side. The CO 2 gas was emitted as a consequence of sublimation of the solid carbon dioxide in hot water. The measurements were done in a closed box in laboratory. The CO 2 gas is a one element of smog which pollutes cities now and then. Our experimental results with CO 2 gas could help to choose a suitable modulation scheme for OWC which are installed in cities with smog-polluted atmospheric conditions.

The paper investigates the problem of improving driveability of alpine skis. That properties depend largely on the vibration behavior of a ski under different snow conditions. There is a broad range of methods to deal with vibration damping, both active and passive, that have been described in the literature. In this paper the passive approaches were taken into consideration. It is due to the specific nature of the sport where use of external sources of energy may be impractical. Passive shunt damping system has been designed for a commercially available model of an alpine ski. The performance of the designed system has been evaluated on a numerical model of the ski. Piezoelectric patches have been included in the model by means of a generalized impedance that complies both the mechanical properties and shunted circuit electrical properties. The fraction of strain energy stored in a piezoelectric element at particular vibration modes were used to evaluate the maximum damping coefficient for first three resonant modes that have the largest influence on the ski properties. The damping system is based on piezoelectric patches that can be easily embedded in the laminated structure of a ski.
