Spatial attention-based hybrid VGG-SVM and VGG-RF frameworks for improved cotton leaf disease detection

The agriculture industry's production and food quality have been impacted by plant leaf diseases in recent years. Hence, it is vital to have a system that can automatically identify and diagnose diseases at an initial stage for enhancing the quality of agricultural output and also for stopping the overall plant extinction. Most state-of-the-art methods do not provide appropriate accuracy of identification when the similarity among different diseases is higher and the input leaf images have complex background. In this work, a transfer learning-based automated crop disease recognition system is proposed to handle this problem. The cotton leaf disease detection framework being proposed here includes two key stages: (1) the feature extraction stage, where the convolutional neural network (CNN) model from the visual geometry group (VGG-16) is employed to obtain the deep features from cotton leaf images with complex background. (2) Cotton leaf disease detection stage: Here, the extracted optimal features are input to the machine learning classifiers, namely random forest (RF) and nonlinear support vector machine (SVM), for the initial classification of the diseases. For providing an optimal cotton crop disease detection performance, Kaggle’s four-class cotton disease dataset with complex background is chosen in this work. For the final decision making and analysis, two hybrid models named spatial attention-based hybrid VGG-RF and hybrid VGG-SVM have been proposed in this work for enhancing the decision accuracy. These hybrid models offered an average accuracy of approximately 98.29% and 99.31%, respectively, which is higher than the accuracy provided by the related work. This proved that the proposed hybrid model, namely spatial attention-based VGG-SVM and VGG-RF models, with spatial attention outperformed the state-of-the-art classifiers. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Topology-adaptive Bayesian optimization for deep ring echo state networks in speech emotion recognition

Speech emotion recognition is a difficult task that is gaining attention in a variety of domains, including psychology, human–computer interaction, and speech processing. To recognize speech emotions, machine learning techniques such as convolutional neural networks and long short-term memory networks have been successfully used. However, these models often fail to capture the long-term temporal dynamics of emotional speech. In this work, data augmentation was performed on all datasets. The generated result was used to extract the discriminant features. Then we apply a deep echo state network with a ring topology. The Bayesian optimization (BO) algorithm was applied to the spectral radius of the reservoir matrix. Our approach reveals term-weighted and unweighted accuracies of (75.45%, 74.79%), (86.89%, 86.14%), (98.99%, 97.62%), and (62%, 61.24%) on EMO-DB, SAVEE, RAVDESS, and TESS datasets. The findings demonstrate that by using BO, we are able to determine an optimal spectral radius. Therefore, this approach balances the minimal complexity of reservoir design and high emotion recognition accuracy. Notably, we demonstrate that a simple, deterministically constructed cycle reservoir within DRESN is comparable to other methodologies. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Efficient Chinese-Malay Speech-Text Translation via Layer-Freezing Adaptation of Multimodal Foundation Models

This paper addresses the challenge of Chinese-Malay speech-to-text translation (S2TT), a crucial yet under-resourced language pair in computational linguistics. We introduce Layer-Freezing Adaptive Fine-Tuning (LFAFT), a parameter-efficient strategy that selectively freezes and unfreezes Transformer layers to optimize model adaptation. LFAFT achieves an 11.8% relative improvement in BLEU-4 scores while reducing trainable parameters by 45% compared to full fine-tuning. Using our newly constructed Chinese-Malay parallel corpus, our approach improves BLEU scores from 1.86 to 9.30 (+7.44 points) compared to existing Chinese-Malay speech translation systems. This work not only establishes the first large-scale Chinese-Malay S2TT dataset but also presents an efficient adaptation method that makes low-resource speech translation more accessible and computationally feasible. © 2013 IEEE.

Smart cities have attracted extensive coverage from multidisciplinary studies, and many artificial intelligence (AI) solutions have been designed. Conversely, cybersecurity has constantly been a crucial issue and is becoming gradually dangerous in smart cities. The attack defence models are inappropriate for perceiving multistep assaults as the recognition rules are restricted, and efficacy is partial due to many false security alarms. Therefore, an innovative solution is immediately required to progress cybersecurity defence ability. Machine learning (ML) methods are commonly employed to recognize numerous attacks because they could help network administrators grab analogous initials to avert intrusion. This study presents Cybersecurity using a Crested Porcupine Optimizer Algorithm with Hybrid Deep Learning Models (CCPOA-HDLM). The foremost intention of this study is to improve cybersecurity detection and classification in smart city environments. To accomplish that, the CCPOA-HDLM method comprises distinct processes such as min-max normalization, improved Salp swarm algorithm (ISSA)-based feature selection, Multi-Channel Convolutional Neural Network - Recurrent Neural Network (MCNN-RNN)-based cybersecurity detection, and crested porcupine optimizer (CPO)-based parameter selection process. Primarily, data normalization utilizing min-max normalization is implemented. Next, the CCPOA-HDLM method utilizes ISSA based feature selection method to select optimum features. The CCPOA-HDLM technique employs a hybrid of the MCNN-RNN model for the cybersecurity detection and classification process. Moreover, the hyperparameter range of the hybrid of DL techniques occurs using the CPO technique. The experimental validation of the CCPOA-HDLM approach is performed on the UNSW-NB15 dataset, and the outcome portrayed a superior accuracy value of 99.04 % over other recent approaches under various measures. © 2025 The Authors

Counterfeiting is still a pervasive global issue, affecting multiple industries and hindering industrial innovation, while causing substantial financial losses, reputational damage, and risks to consumer safety. From luxury goods and pharmaceuticals to electronics and automotive parts, counterfeit products infiltrate supply chains, leading to a loss of revenue for legitimate businesses and undermining consumer trust. Traditional anti-counterfeiting measures, such as holograms, serial numbers, and barcodes, have proven to be insufficient as counterfeiters continuously develop more sophisticated replication techniques. As a result, there is a growing need for more advanced, secure, and reliable methods to prevent counterfeiting. This paper presents a novel, holistic anti-counterfeiting platform that integrates Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled mobile applications with blockchain technology to provide an innovative, secure, and consumer-friendly authentication mechanism. Our approach addresses key gaps in existing solutions by incorporating dynamic product identifiers, which make replication significantly more difficult. The system enables consumers to verify the authenticity of products instantly using their smartphones, enhancing transparency and trust in the supply chain. Blockchain technology plays a crucial role in our proposed solution by providing an immutable, decentralized ledger that records product authentication data. This ensures that product verification records cannot be tampered with or altered, adding a layer of security that is absent in conventional systems. Additionally, NFC technology enhances security by offering unique identification capabilities, enabling real-time product verification. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed system, real-world testing was conducted across different industries. With the advent of state-of-the-art computer and digital technology, modern civilisation has been immensely facilitated and optimised. The Internet of Things (IoT) has grown in importance in recent years, allowing us to monitor our physical environments and broadening our horizons. The "practice, science, or art" of farming is defined as tending to land, growing crops with the use of different tools and techniques, and then selling the harvested food. If farmers optimise their operations with the help of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), they will be able to work much more efficiently and effectively. Data aggregation involves collecting information from multiple sensors. The data aggregation process is optimised by applying metaheuristic techniques. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is a method for modelling evolution that uses mutation, crossover, and natural selection as its building blocks. The key benefit of the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) approach is that it simultaneously considers local and global search, and it doesn't get trapped calculating its local minima. Naturalistic algorithms like ALO model their hunting behaviour after that of ant-lions and doodlebugs. It manages to find a happy medium between exploration and exploitation with just one operator. Experimental evidences show that the proposed metaheuristic technique, ABC-ALO, which combines the best elements of Artificial Bee Colony and Ant Lion Optimisation, is superior to existing metaheuristic approaches in terms of lifetime computation, or the number of alive nodes at different round counts. © 2025

Salp swarm algorithm using lens opposition-based learning and local search for constrained optimization problems

The Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) simulates how salps forage and travel in the ocean. SSA suffers from low initial population diversity, improper balancing of exploration and exploitation, and slow convergence speed. Thus, we have proposed a novel variant of SSA (LOLSSA) by integrating lens opposition learning with the fundamental evolutionary techniques of SSA to increase the initial population variety. During exploration, the information about the local best position for each individual is effectively shared with the follower, using the salp position update process to avoid getting stuck at the local optimum. At the end of each iteration, the local search algorithm is utilized to increase exploitation. Additionally, the leader’s salp position incorporates inertia weight to speed up the convergence speed. Swarm intelligence algorithms have proven their efficacy in feature selection, since they search for an optimal set of features in a large search area that will have the best impact on the accuracy of the training system. LOLSSA is thus employed for feature selection to select informative features in 11 high-dimensional datasets, where it outperforms well-known metaheuristics in average fitness, accuracy, and average number of feature reductions. In the software-as-a-service cloud computing model, a task scheduling problem is solved to satisfy the QoS requirement of both the service provider and the user. Experiments show that LOLSSA optimizes this problem in terms of different performance metrics. LOLSSA also outperforms other metaheuristics regarding 23 well-known benchmark functions, IEEE CEC-C06 2019, and CEC-06 2020 benchmark functions, and in solving engineering design problems. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In response to the escalating demand for electricity, the aging process and inherent failures in power lines have become unavoidable challenges in their operational integrity. This research addresses the imperative need for a robust method to detect damage in power insulator disc images, introducing a novel feature extraction technique grounded in color intensity profile transformation and ensemble learning. For the purposes of the research, a specific dataset was developed based on publicly available images of power insulators. The collection consists of 9232 images of insulator discs which included 2184 images of damaged discs. The discernible damages include breakages and burnouts. Two distinct analysis variants were employed. In the first variant (V1), two classification groups were selected: disc with damages and disc without damages. In the second variant (V2), three classification groups were selected: discs without damage, broken discs, and burnout discs. The described research was divided into two successive stages. In the first of them (S1), the transformed color intensity profiles for the prepared data set were built and various machine learning models for their classification were trained and evaluated. In the next stage (S2), previously developed, highest efficient machine learning models, were used to make the detection of various damaged types of overhead line insulator discs. For the first stage of research high-performance results and a high value of the F1 score parameters were obtained (F1 score = 0.999 for the first variant (S1V1) and F1 score = 0.992 for the second variant (S1V2). In the second stage of research and the first variant (S2V1), the highest result of the F1 score was 0.932 and for the second variant (S2V2) F1 score was 0.930. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.
