Centralized smart energy monitoring system for legacy home appliances

The increasing global population and reliance on electrical devices for daily life resulted in sharply rising energy consumption. Also, this leads to higher household electricity bills. As a result, there is a growing demand for energy monitoring systems that can accurately estimate energy usage to help save power, especially for older home appliances that are difficult or expensive to update with monitoring sensors. However, current energy monitoring systems have some drawbacks, such as the inability to detect different types of appliances and the deployment complexity. Moreover, such systems are too costly to use in older power infrastructures. To address this issue, we proposed a centralized smart energy monitoring system designed for legacy home appliances, aiming to address the limitations of current energy monitoring systems by avoiding costly infrastructure upgrades to calculate the power consumption of legacy home appliances. The proposed system employs a two-layered architecture comprising hardware (Emontx device, Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADC), and Current Transformer (CT) sensors) and a software layer that includes Artificial Intelligence (AI) predictors using a pre-defined set of rules and K Nearest Neighbours (KNN) algorithms. We conducted three experiments on real home appliances to evaluate the proposed work. The accuracy of the proposed system showed positive results after several modifications and hard tuning of several parameters in devices, specifically for Jordanian power plants. © The Author(s) 2024.

This project focuses on the development of a website system designed to facilitate knowledge acquisition for students enrolled in the Kulliyyah of information Communication and technology (KICT) at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The aim is to alleviate the information overload experienced by new intake students during the Taaruf week (orientation week). Despite its establishment in 2010, KICT faces a persistent challenge where new students remain unaware of crucial system details, including rules, regulations, and academic matters. To address this issue, the project endeavors to provide a comprehensive platform enabling new students to access pertinent information and knowledge about KICT. An analysis of seven similar existing systems has been conducted, highlighting their main functions, advantages, and disadvantages. The system Development Life Cycle methodology has been selected for its practicality in guiding the project through the phases of Final Year Project (FYP) 1 and FYP2. Data collection involved surveying 30 KICT students to identify challenges faced by new students in obtaining the necessary information. Results underscore the urgent need for a technically guided application to enhance student understanding of KICT. The logical design of the app encompasses a Use Case Diagram, Use Case Narrative, Activity Diagram, Interface Flow, Low-Fidelity Design, and Interface Flow. The 'i-know' system has been developed using PHP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript, with connectivity to MySQL through phpMyAdmin for user authentication. The User Acceptance Test (UAT) was conducted during implementation, following beta testing. The paper concludes with insights into the system's effectiveness and its potential to address the identified challenges faced by new KICT students. © 2024 IEEE.

A multimodal sentiment analysis system for recognizing person aggressiveness in pain based on textual and visual information

This article proposes a multimodal sentiment analysis system for recognizing a person’s aggressiveness in pain. The implementation has been divided into five components. The first three steps are related to a text-based sentiment analysis system to perform classification tasks such as predicting the classes into non-aggressive, covertly aggressive, and overtly aggressive classes. The remaining two components are related to an image-based sentiment analysis system. A deep learning-based approach has been employed to do feature learning and predict the three types of pain classes. An aggression dataset for the text-based system and the UNBC-McMaster database for an image-based system has been employed, respectively. Experimental results have been compared with the state-of-the-art methods, showing the superiority of the proposed approach. Finally, the scores due to text-based and image-based sentiment analysis systems are fused to obtain the performance for the proposed multimodal sentiment analysis system. © 2023, The Author(s).

The creation of new approaches to the design and configuration of smart buildings relies heavily on AI tools and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, particularly optimization techniques. The widespread use of electronic devices has sparked a strong desire to incorporate the Internet of Things (IoT) into houses, leading to the development of smart homes. As networked gadgets proliferate rapidly, this phenomenon is characterized by rapid proliferation. In smart buildings, smart cities, smart grids, and smart homes, interconnected electronic devices are becoming more popular. The objective of this paper is to enhance the functionality of home automation systems through the performance of speech recognition using the Bat-Salp Swarm Optimization (BSSO). This paper investigates the notion of (BSSO), a data analysis methodology that facilitates the automated construction of analytical models. The implementation of BSSO provides an enhancement to the feature selection process in speech recognition, providing an approximation solution that improves the accuracy of system decisions. The use of the BSSO technique improves the precision of the voice recognition system and also incorporates an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for the classification part. The findings substantiated the efficacy of the employed methodology. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Proper waste management models using recent technologies like computer vision,machine learning(ML),and deep learning(DL)are needed to effectively handle the massive quantity of increasing ***,waste classification becomes a crucial topic which helps to categorize waste into hazardous or non-hazardous ones and thereby assist in the decision making of the waste management *** study concentrates on the design of hazardous waste detection and classification using ensemble learning(HWDC-EL)technique to reduce toxicity and improve human *** goal of the HWDC-EL technique is to detect the multiple classes of wastes,particularly hazardous and non-hazardous *** HWDC-EL technique involves the ensemble of three feature extractors using Model Averaging technique namely discrete local binary patterns(DLBP),EfficientNet,and *** addition,the flower pollination algorithm(FPA)based hyperparameter optimizers are used to optimally adjust the parameters involved in the EfficientNet and DenseNet121 ***,a weighted voting-based ensemble classifier is derived using three machine learning algorithms namely support vector machine(SVM),extreme learning machine(ELM),and gradient boosting tree(GBT).The performance of the HWDC-EL technique is tested using a benchmark Garbage dataset and it obtains a maximum accuracy of 98.85%.

The rise of online social network (OSN) platforms has revealed pivotal issues with regards to data transparency and the concerns on the user's consent. Users are barely aware of how their data is used. To this end, this paper investigates the notion of applying blockchain technology for decentralizing social data, thus bringing more privacy and trust to the abstract concept of OSN platforms. We propose a Blockchain-Based Distributed Social Network system (B2DSN) that uses Hyperledger Fabric and InterPlanetary File system (IPFS) to secure sovereignty rights of data and offer greater control to users' data subjects. Hyperledger fabric is used to collect friends and data that are analyzed from social networks. We integrate consensus and verification methods directly within topic-based communities to provide trustworthiness of OSN platforms and eliminate the dissemination of rumors, and fake news. The feasibility of B2DSN is proved based on the integration of decentralized overlay network data flow, data sovereignty and verification and topic-based communities. The experimental simulation for data integrity demonstrates that the B2DSN model based on blockchain is feasible in securing and verifying the authenticity of social data even for large-scale OSNs. © 2025 IEEE.

The hawker industry is known for its diverse food options and affordable prices, but customers often struggle to select their preferred hawker stalls due to the abundance of choices. To address this challenge, this research proposes the integration of business intelligence techniques with a recommendation marketplace system using content-based filtering. This research aims to enhance the hawker dining experience by providing personalised recommendations based on customer preferences and leveraging data-driven insights. The objectives of this study are to collect and integrate data from various sources, including hawker stall information, customer preferences, and feedback. This research will employ content-based filtering techniques to analyse this data and develop a recommendation engine that suggests hawker stalls and food options aligned with users' preferences and past interactions. Through this integration, this project seeks to derive valuable insights from the collected data, such as identifying popular food categories, analysing customer behaviour, and understanding customer satisfaction levels. These insights will enable us to optimise the recommendation marketplace system, improve operational efficiency, and enhance the overall customer experience. This paper presents a mobile-based recommendation system that allows customers to explore personalised hawker stall recommendations based on their preferences. By integrating business intelligence with a recommendation marketplace system for hawker food, this research contributes to improving the decision-making process for customers, promoting hawker stall visibility and revenue, and creating a personalised and enjoyable dining experience. © 2023 IEEE.

Changes in the Atmospheric Electric Field Signal(AEFS)are highly correlated with weather changes,especially with thunderstorm ***,little attention has been paid to the ambiguous weather information implicit in AEFS *** this paper,a Fuzzy C-Means(FCM)clustering method is used for the first time to develop an innovative approach to characterize the weather attributes carried by ***,a time series dataset is created in the time domain using AEFS *** AEFS-based weather is evaluated according to the time-series Membership Degree(MD)changes obtained by inputting this dataset into the ***,thunderstorm intensities are reflected by the change in distance from a thunderstorm cloud point charge to an AEF ***,a matching relationship is established between the normalized distance and the thunderstorm dominant MD in the space ***,the rationality and reliability of the proposed method are verified by combining radar charts and expert *** results confirm that this method accurately characterizes the weather attributes and changes in the AEFS,and a negative distance-MD correlation is obtained for the first *** detection of thunderstorm activity by AEF from the perspective of fuzzy set technology provides a meaningful guidance for interpretable thunderstorms.

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disease causing extreme muscular fatigue, triggering problems with vision, swallowing, speech, mobility, dexterity, and breathing. However, early detection and prediction of MG is a crucial and quite challenging task for medical practitioners. So, in our proposed work, we are focused on introducing an ontology-based intelligent system for the prognosis of patients affected by this neuromuscular disease. The given paper presents a novel framework that employs the concepts of ontology, semantic web rules, and reasoner for deriving whether the patient is tested positive or negative. The suggested framework's effectiveness is assessed by comparing it to machine learning classifiers using parameters from the NIH repository for Myasthenia Gravis. The experimental results show that the ontological-based framework is able to achieve higher accuracy (80.85%), higher precision (78.37%), and higher recall (76.55%) than the existing classifiers used in the recent studies. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2024.
