Enhancement of PVDF/LiCl membrane performance by modifying the membrane surface using zeolite NaY and ZCC spray coating method for Dunaliella salina microalgae dewatering

Utilization of Dunaliella salina microalgae as a raw material for bioethanol production encountered problems in terms of harvesting microalgae. The dilute solution and the size of the microalgae are too small to be a challenge in harvesting microalgae. In this study, the surface modification of PVDF/LiCl membrane with Zeolite NaY and Zeolite-Carbon Composite (ZCC) was carried out by spray coating for harvesting Dunaliella salina microalgae. Zeolite NaY was synthesized by hydrothermal method at 100 °C for 7 h and ZCC was synthesized by sucrose impregnation on zeolite. All membranes were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) instruments, as well as Water Contact Angle (WCA) test and membrane performance test for harvesting Dunaliella salina microalgae The results showed that Zeolite NaY and ZCC coatings have been shown to increase the hydrophilicity and performance of PVDF/LiCl membranes for harvesting Dunaliella salina microalgae. The increase in the hydrophilicity of the membrane was indicated by decreasing the contact angle of the PVDF/LiCl membrane from 84.14° to 69.2° for 0.10% PVDF/LiCl/ZCC membrane. The coating of zeolite NaY 0.15% into PVDF/LiCl membrane enhanced the permeability from 148.53 ± 32.98 L/m2h to 173.40 ± 8.42 L/m2h, while the coating of 0.10% ZCC into PVDF/LiCl membrane enhanced the water permeability into 208.48 ± 27.99 L/m2h. Furthermore, the selectivity also increased from 97.64% to 100% rejection in microalgae dewatering process. This shows that selectively modified zeolite NaY and ZCC membranes are only able to pass seawater as a microalgae culture medium. © 2022

A thermogravimetruic study of PMMA/zircon composites was performed at temperatures between 30 and 200°C, instead of above degradation temperature of PMMA at around 300°C. The focus of the study was to observe mass changes between the designated temperatures due to zircon filler and infrared (IR) exposure. Four samples were prepared, i.e. pure PMMA without IR exposure and with IR exposure, each without and with 1 wt.% zircon filler. The success of the synthesis of the composites was examined using x-ray diffraction (XRD). Thermal gravimetry (TG) data of samples at the designated temperatures were plotted to explain several thermal phenomena. Results showed that all samples exhibited a drop of 1.5-2% weight between 30 and 75°C with only a slight increase after IR exposure. The slight drop maybe due to water loss or evaporation of broken weak hydrocarbon bonds. There is a further slight increase in mass for the unexposed samples between 75 and 105°C, i.e. just before the glass transition temperature of PMMA. The mass decrease continued up to 135 °C for the unexposed pure PMMA and up to 135°C for the other samples, indicating that filler and IR exposure favored PMMA mass loss. After that, up to 200 °C, all samples gained mass which was presumably due to oxidation. The presence of filler and the IR exposure promoted a larger oxidation as a result of some breaking PMMA bonds. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This research focused on cow dung digesters as measurement samples, utilizing the TGS2611 and MQ-4 sensors, both known for their affordability. The objective was to develop a low-cost gas sensor system for monitoring methane gas concentrations through a straightforward web-based data acquisition platform. The DHT11 sensor was employed to measure air temperature and humidity. The electronic sensor circuit in this research utilized a voltage divider circuit. Testing the performance of the low-cost gas sensor involved integrating it with an anaerobic digestion system. For both the TGS2611 and MQ-4 sensors, the graph illustrating the relationship between sensor voltage (volts) and methane gas concentration (ppm) formed a logarithmic or non-linear pattern. The measurement range for the system was around 4700 ppm to 6300 ppm for TGS2611 and 4000 ppm to 5100 ppm for MQ-4. The sensor sensitivity was determined as 0.5433 Volts/ppm for TGS2611 and 0.5639 Volt/ppm for MQ-4. The TGS2611 sensor exhibited a higher response to changes in methane gas concentration, while the MQ-4 sensor successfully detected methane gas within its designated range. Interestingly, the TGS2611 sensor accurately detected methane gas concentrations above its specified range. The gas sampling procedure involved automatic gas sampling in a vacuum chamber for measurement, a strategy potentially enhancing sensor robustness. This research successfully amalgamated sensor advantages, circuit control, and data analysis to realize an economical yet reliable monitoring system. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The research developed a monitoring system that focuses on the development of a system and the acquisition of its readings into a simple website. This research was conducted in an effort to obtain data that can be used for managing methane gas pollution in the environment. Methane gas (CH4) is a natural gas consisting of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. Methane gas is one of the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, while humidity and temperature can increase or decrease methane gas productivity. Therefore, in this research, a monitoring system was created for methane gas concentration using TGS2611 sensor, humidity and temperature using DHT11 sensor through the creation of a chamber connected to test materials such as cow dung digesters and tofu wastewater as a source of methane gas production. The results obtained indicate that, in the development of the monitoring system as a measuring tool, it successfully detects the concentration of methane gas, humidity and temperature for each test material using calibration through characteristic equation V = 0,5591 ln(n) - 2,2657. For data acquisition in the form of methane gas concentration parameter readings by the TGS2611 sensor, humidity and temperature by the DHT11 sensor to the ESP8266 microcontroller to be displayed on the serial monitor, LCD, and the website that has been created in real-time. To display the data acquisition of the monitoring system, each component of the system is connected. Starting from software, hardware, and test materials. data acquisition begins with sensor readings by ESP8266 through a program from Arduino IDE displayed on the serial monitor and LCD. Once connected to wifi or a hotspot and the data is successfully sent, the data will be checked by notepad++ and entered into the phpMyAdmin website database for storage. From this database. Imidazoline and its derivatives have been proposed as effective organic corrosion inhibitors for AISI 1018 mild steel, though challenges remain regarding their production processes and efficiency in CO2/H2S-saturated brine solutions. In this study, fatty imidazoline acetate (FIA) was synthesized from waste cooking oil and evaluated for its ability to protect AISI 1018 steel in corrosive environments. The chemical composition of the synthesized FIA was confirmed through gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC–MS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Corrosion inhibition performance was assessed using potentiodynamic polarization at room temperature, with the most promising results further examined via weight loss measurements and contact angle analyses. A commercial inhibitor commonly used in pipelines with CO2/H2S-saturated brine was also evaluated for comparison. Surface characterization of the steel samples, both with and without inhibitors, was conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The FIA demonstrated an inhibition efficiency (IE%) of 99.89% at a concentration of 40 mg/L, closely matching the performance of the commercial inhibitor (IE% = 99.96%). This study underscores the potential of FIA as a sustainable and effective corrosion inhibitor in CO2/H2S-saturated environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Recent years have witnessed significant interest in truncated spline estimators for nonparametric regression with quantitative data. However, the applicability of these estimators is limited by the frequent occurrence of categorical response variables in real-world applications. A paucity of nonparametric estimators exists for handling categorical response data. This necessitates a method capable of modeling relationships between variables exhibiting pattern shifts across sub-intervals with categorical outcomes. This article thus introduces a novel multivariate truncated spline nonparametric regression estimator for categorical data, developed through a synthesis of literature and theoretical research. The developed method was applied to Indonesia's 2023 poverty depth index data and East Java's 2020 gender development index data. A comparative analysis of the Truncated Spline nonparametric regression model and the binary logistic regression model for estimating categorical data revealed that the Truncated Spline approach yielded superior estimations. Some of the highlights of the proposed method are: 1) This study employs truncated spline nonparametric regression to model categorical response data, 2) Optimal knot placement is determined using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), 3) The method's overall performance is demonstrated through its application to two established datasets, and 4) This study compares truncated spline nonparametric regression and logistic regression. © (2025), (International Association of Engineers). Knowledge Leaks in data-Driven Business Models? Exploring Different Types of Knowledge Risks and Protection Measures

data-driven business models imply the inter-organisational exchange of data or similar value objects. data science methods enable organisations to discover patterns and eventually knowledge from data. Further, by training machine learning models, knowledge is materialised in those models. Thus, organisations might risk the exposure of competitive knowledge by sharing data-related value objects, such as data, models or predictions. Although knowledge risks have been studied in traditional business models, little research has been conducted in the direction of data-driven business models. In this explorative qualitative study, we conducted 28 expert interviews in three rounds (two exploratory and one evaluatory) and identified five types of risks along the three basic types of value objects: data, models and predictions. These risks depend on the context, i.e., when competitive knowledge could be discovered from shared value objects. We found that those risks can be mitigated by technology, contractual regulations, trusted relationships, and adjusting the business model design. In this study, we show that the risk of knowledge leakage is a relevant risk factor in data-driven business models. Overall, knowledge risks should be considered already during business model design, and their management requires an interdisciplinary approach via a balanced assessment. The level of knowledge protection from a technology perspective highly depends on computer science innovations and thus is a moving target. As an outlook, we suggest that knowledge risk will become even more relevant with the extensive usage of machine learning and artificial intelligence in data-driven business models. © The Author(s) 2024.

The increasing demand for products that use the electroplating process has caused the growth of the electroplating industry in various countries to increase. This growth was followed by an increase in the amount of toxic and hazardous chromium waste in the water. Continuous technology development is needed to overcome these problems. One of the technologies that has been developed until now is membrane technology. On the other hand, plastic bottle waste, which increases every year (381.73 million tons), has the property of forming films or thin layers. Therefore, the use of plastic bottle waste into a low-cost, sustainable, and environmentally friendly membrane material has great potential. In this study, the immersion-precipitation phase inversion method was used in the membrane preparation process by modifying fillers (zeolite NaY) to improve membrane performance. Determination of fillers was studied. Furthermore, the fabricated membranes were tested for their performance in chromium ion contamination in wastewater. The results showed that the PET-W membrane could produce a water flux of 292.74 Lm−2h−1bar−1 and a chromium ion flux of 544.94 Lm−2h−1bar−1. The addition of zeolite NaY increased the percent removal from PET-W membrane to 10 times (from 4.07 to 47.8). © 2022

Graphene is a two-dimensional material that has special characteristics. The electronic properties of graphene show zero band gap conditions. The magnetic properties of graphene can be created by modifying the electronic properties through atomic substitution. In this research, we study the magnetic and electronic properties of single-layer graphene substituted with boron (B) atoms, because it has almost the same atomic radius as carbon (C) atoms, resulting in only small lattice deformation. The spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) method implemented in the Quantum Espresso package was selected to perform the calculations. The simulated models are a 4×4×1 supercell of pristine graphene structure consisting of 32 C atoms and boron-substituted graphene with a variety number of atoms (B = 1 and 2 atoms). The results of band gap energy obtained after the structure was optimized are 0.19 and 0.21 eV (spin-down and spin-up) for G-B and 0.36 and 0.37 eV (spin-down and spin-up) for G-2B. Boron substitution in graphene opens the bandgap and shifts the Fermi energy level. It also influences the magnetic moment of the graphene layer, estimated at 0.22 and 0.06 μB/cell for G-B and G-2B, respectively. This research shows that modifying graphene by substituting boron makes the graphene material semiconductive and weakly magnetic. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Palm shells are waste that is produced every year due to the large demand for palm oil. The potential for carbon derivatives in palm shell charcoal waste that can be extracted is more like activated carbon. Therefore, this research aims to provide an explanation of the ability of palm shell charcoal carbon as a residual component of palm oil processing that is affordable and abundantly available, which if maximized properly will be the forerunner to the development of technology that has added value. The capabilities of Palm Shell Charcoal can be applied for technical applications with further development. It is hoped that this study will provide initial information for scientists and policy makers in the fields of environmental conservation and technology. Palm shell charcoal (ACKS) that has been washed, dried and made into powder is subjected to DSC-TGA, FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX testing. The XRD results show that there is a main broad peak that appears around the 2θ ∼23° angle which corresponds to the (002) plane and also a narrow peak appears at the 26° angle which indicates graphite growth. Meanwhile, the FTIR results show that many of the bonds formed are C=O, C-O, C=C and O-H bonds which indicate the presence of hard carbon. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
