In this study, speech-to-text recognition with computer-aided translation were applied to a web-based educational project. With such approach, we aimed to enable participants from two different cultures who do not share common communication language to interact and share information with each other. Speech-to-text recognition system generated text from a speaker’s voice input in one language and computer-aided translation system simultaneously translated it into another one. We aimed to test the feasibility of our approach to enhance students’ cross-cultural learning. Results of our study demonstrated that applying speech-to-text recognition with computer-aided translation have a potential to enhance cross-cultural learning. Particularly, application of these technologies helps participants from two different cultures and without common language of communication to interact and to share culture-related information with each other. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of applying the speech-to-text recognition (STR) technology during lectures in English on learning performance of non-native English students. Furthermore, how useful texts generated by the STR for students of different English as foreign language (EFL) ability during different difficulty level lectures was explored. For this reason, one experiment was carried out in this study. Two lectures, one is intermediate difficulty level lecture and the other is advanced, were administered in a traditional classroom and the STR was adopted to aid students' learning. Results of this study showed that students who used STR-generated texts outperformed students who did not use them. According to students, STR-texts were useful to follow the instructor, clarify some words, confirm what the lecturer has said, make up missed information, and enhance understanding. It was found that STR-texts were beneficial for learning of low EFL ability students during both lectures while high EFL ability students only used STR-texts during the advanced level lecture. Based on these results, several suggestions and implications for teaching and research community are proposed in this study.

Previous studies have demonstrated that the of pair-programming has beneficial effects on student learning. Based on pair-programming, this study proposes pair-programming configuration for learning computer networks and designs a virtualization-based lab that allow the pair input command from two computers to one terminal at the same time. In the experiment, university students were divided into two groups: In this experimental group, a pair-programming was applied for perform lab assignments, whereas the students in the control group completed lab assignments solo. The results show that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in learning achievement and also had more confidence in their work, thereby reducing the instructor's workloads. Finally, the findings of the questionnaires reveal that the experimental students considerably enjoyed the pair-programming configuration in the virtualization-based lab and had the high motivation to use the proposed system. Therefore, pair-programming configuration is suitable and helpful to facilitate learning in a computer networks lab.
