One major drawback of previous research on speech-to-text recognition (STR) is that most of their findings showing an effectiveness of STR for learning in traditional classroom were based on subjective evidences. Very few studies have used eye-tracking techniques to investigate visual attention of students on STR generated text. Furthermore, not much attention was paid to learning differences (i.e. learning ability) to use STR-text. Therefore, this study carried out one experiment in which participants' visual attention on STR generated text during lectures was investigated by employing eye-tracking technique. Besides, how differently effective STR-text can be to influence participants' learning achievement was tested. Furthermore, this paper discusses results, research findings, and implications along with conclusions and several suggestions for future development and research.

Research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has gained interest in recent years and has fostered new ideas and expectations. There are many kinds of human motion capture methods nowadays. In this paper, we have compared 2 kinds of methods which are the most popular methods in HCI - Microsoft Kinect Sensor and Inertial Sensors. This paper presents a wearable real-time human motion capture system using inertial sensors, and result of our method has been compared with Microsoft Kinect Sensor. Several experiments have been performed to validate the effectiveness of our method.

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

Instructional design of inquiry-based classrooms need to regard learning as dynamically flexible and adaptive with opportunities for emergent teaching and learning strategies as well as assessments. Consequently, we argue that emergent instructional design and emergent learning systems should focus on the discovery of instructional principles, instructional strategies and technologies that promote the development of inquiry, with teacher beliefs as a key design factor. We scope our study to the inculcation of Mathematical thinking because Mathematical thinking focuses on the identification of similarities among instances, leading to the development of general principles. The ability to formulate principles grows alongside learners' search for abstract problem-solving methods and mental schemata. These serve as analogy-enhancing transfer between different task situations. Consequently, in this exploratory study, we aim to help learners to learn to inquire and to reason, to be able to identify patterns, describe patterns and apply patterns to solve problems. Furthermore, we aim to identify how teacher's beliefs influence the design of teaching-learning practices. Subsequently, we suggest implications to the design of creative inquiry-oriented-based curriculum, pedagogy and technologies for the learning of Mathematical thinking.

Mobile computing offers potential opportunities for students' learning especially when it combines a sensing device such as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). Researchers have indicated that a key feature of in-field learning supported by mobile devices and technology is context awareness, with which context and functionality provided by the learning system are adapted to the user's situation. However, the design of context-aware mobile learning systems provides the authors with major challenges in terms of both defining use context as well as developing appropriate concepts relevant to the design of contextual information on the systems. Educators have highlighted the role of activity in science development and learning, implying that activity theory can be used to design a mobile learning environment. This paper presents the use of activity theory as a framework for describing the design of a context aware mobile learning application. A case study for the design of a mobile learning application for science learning is described using activity theory. Copyright © 2013, IGI Global.

Recent evidence suggests that a tabletop technology has a potential to support face to face collaboration and awareness of users in co-located environment. However, several limitations of this technology, particularly, its interaction techniques were reported in related literature. Therefore, this study introduces extended interaction mechanisms, such as two-way rubber band, drag-and-response, and central collection area. One experiment was conducted to evaluate differences in collaborative performance and oral and physical interactions of participants with these and other current interaction mechanisms. Furthermore, this study aimed to investigate participants' perceptions toward proposed interaction mechanisms and its functions to support awareness and collaboration. This paper discusses results, research findings, and implications of this study along with conclusions and several suggestions for future development and research.
