The laboratory course is an inferential curriculum designed to foster science inquiry ability in science education. However, in the universities of Taiwan, laboratory courses often last only a limited time and explore only a single topic of inquiry. Students' individual ideas and experiences are not well represented in the group inquiry process. Therefore, this study attempts to provide an organizing tool on PDAs to help student groups regulate their inquiry processes and engage in reflective inquiry activities. By gathering data from 56 students (17 groups) participating in the laboratory course, this study utilizes handheld devices as an observational tool for peer interactions in collaborative inquiry activities. A total of 360 minutes of activity log was analyzed for details of peer interaction in order to understand how handheld devices can influence group regulation when students are provided with group regulation functions on PDAs. Students demonstrated six main types of interaction when formulating group inquiry plans via PDAs. This study makes distinction between four patterns of cooperative PDA use. Such distinction could assist teachers and system designers in facilitating group activities by avoiding unfavorable interaction patterns. The results show that unperceived conflicts concealed in individual devices impede peer interaction. This finding suggests that designers of learning environments should consider the importance of reinforcement mechanisms applied in Mobile Computer Supported Collaborative learning (MCSCL) to maintain shared understanding.

Due to the current method on sentence combining, which results a frustrated and bored outcome on Taiwanese student's motivation, this study provides an enhancement model for stimulating student's motivation. Through integrating the in-class lecture with teacher-centered design, this model focuses on an after-class activity with student-centered design which concentrates on the impact of peer pressure. During the after-class learning activity, this study applies a drill-and-practice pedagogy. Student would accumulate personal cognitive knowledge as every student would have generated their self-constructed learning outcome, and s/he would be rewarded for her/his effort. Then the students would return to the in-class activity, and the teacher would allow the students to begin peer-evaluation. Every student starts to rank their peers' answers;as a result, the students own both a score on their efforts and a score on peer-evaluation. As soon as the peer-evaluation ends, student's personal identity (score) would be initiated. Student would have an opportunity on comparing their identity with the other students, so that there would be a peer pressure established among students. Students could enhance their self-motivation, and to work harder in the next stage of practicing (after-class activity). This study describes the design on the enhancement model for student's motivation, and further study would be mentioned at the end of this article.

E-learning systems now currently existing almost using the mouse and keyboard to interact with learners. Apart from learners should waste time to learn how to manipulate the mouse and keyboard and also increase their cognitive loads on learning tasks. In the case of the teacher marking corrections on students' homework, the teacher need to correct the same questions again and again by each student, and the teacher usually can only find whether their answers were right or wrong. In particular, when the answers were wrong, it is difficult for the teacher to understand the problem solving process and to grasp the bottlenecks the students encountered. In this study, the authors develop a pen-based system to assist students in mathematics problem solving. The system can record problem solving process and in peer assessment process, students can review the record by each other. The preliminary results showed students can use the system more naturally and learn different problem solving methods from the peers.

Mastering the skills in solving word problems is one of the important goals in elementary mathematics education;however, word problems are sometimes difficult for students, resulting in frustration. In this study, the authors design a small game, called Down! Down! Irised Boxes. When students make their effort to solve word problems, they can also interact with the game. The game transforms students' performance into interesting feedbacks in order to enhance students' motivation for solving word problems. © 2010 IEEE.

Motivation is an essential element for successful learning, the process of goal setting can be an important source of motivation. On the other hand, video games can also motivate students' learning motivation. Thus, this study designed a negotiation mechanism in a game-based learning environment to increase students' learning motivation. Game was used to initiate students' learning motivation and provide feedbacks. The negotiation mechanism was used to help students set learning goals to maintain their learning motivation. The results showed that the game environment engage students in the learning tasks and helped low-confidence students improve their self-efficacy.

This study applied the features of social media to implement a picture book in facilitating the students collaborative creative activity. Based on Amabile's componential theory, this study evaluated the influences of social media in students' creativity behaviors. The results showed that the students were more active to present multi-thinking, as well as revealed higher significant satisfaction in the perceptions of the ownership of working and peers' mutual support. Moreover, the collaborative creative environment engaged the students in developing creative works.

Students' affections in learning have a significant impact on engagement and learning outcomes. When students have negative emotions, they usually do not learn well. But current e-learning systems often lack many features of profound affection, and fail to provide suitable emotional interaction. In this paper, we evaluate some studies of affective interaction e-learning systems. We also proposed our approach to develop an emotionally interactive learning system. © 2010 IEEE.

Although competitive games have multi-fold benefits to students' learning, such as motivation, satisfaction, and effectiveness, inappropriate competitive learning activities may have some negative impacts on students. From the literature, the authors have identified three main strategies which may reduce the negative impacts in competition game. However, because these strategies target only at the design of competition, the learning effects is limited. In fact, learning also happens in the preparation before competition. Hence, this study adopts preparation-before-competition approach to foster the habit of endeavor. That is, students make more effort to learn;they will win more easily. An animal companion system, entitled My-Pet-Trainer system, was implemented according to such approach. The system encourages students to improve their learning in the preparation stage where the virtual pets represent students' open learner models before the competition stage. In addition, the paper also considers the symbiosis and emotional relationship with virtual pets to maintain long-term interactions. © 2010 IEEE.

We research the multimedia information hiding (MIH) which is a technology to overlay digital information on multimedia contents such as picture, sound, document, etc. As application to disaster management of MIH, we have developed a new technology called "PAIH" (Public Address Information Hiding) which is a technology to overlay information such as position or destination on siren sound of urgent vehicles. Siren sound is allowed to degrade of sound quality, but PAIH is required to decode correct information from siren sound with pitch shift (Doppler effect) or under noisy environment.

Oral reading fluency is essential to overall reading achievements and repeat reading has been found to be an effective strategy for oral reading fluency. Choral reading is the most authentic use of repeated readings in the EFL primary grades. However, teachers have neither sufficient time nor adequate expertise to deal with non-fluent readers. Hence, challenges with oral reading fluency and motivation have long been considered a common characteristic for teacher and students. Hence, this study proposed a one-to-one Audio Book Platform incorporating repeated reading strategy and record-play function. An intact sample of two classes of the sixth graders in Taiwan were randomly assigned and treated as experimental group and control (choral reading) group. An empirical study is conducted to assess whether there are differences in the effectiveness of enhancing oral reading fluency. A questionnaire elicited information concerning motivation included (1) anxiety, (2) intrinsic goal orientation, (3) extrinsic goal orientation, (4) task value, and (5) self-regulation is also conducted. Although no significant difference was uncovered in oral reading fluency and motivation, the findings could serve as some general principles for researchers who would like to experiment with one-to-one repeated reading in similar contexts.
