learning science, especially in the physics field, there are many varieties of invisible and abstract phenomena that are hard and difficult for students to observe and learn. One of the tools that can help students to understand those phenomena in a better way is computer simulations. The computer simulations are usually used in both on-site classroom and on-line learning platforms. learning in the COVID-19 pandemic era at present, the computer simulations are very important for helping students to understand the physics concept. Interactive computer simulation can be considered as one of the effective methods of facilitating inquiry learning in science, as it allows students to experience the scientific inquiry process and facilitates students to understand an abstract conception and to understand the relationship between variables of invisible phenomena more clearly in reasonable ways. This study aimed to develop the interactive computer simulation and learning activity for enhancing students' conceptual understanding of the buoyant force on the CoSci learning platform. Totally eighteen participants were studied in the twelfth grade in science classrooms of a university-affiliated school project (SCiUS), Khon Kaen University, Thailand, in 2019. The learning activity was developed based on students' alternative concepts and used to facilitate students' conceptual understanding of the buoyant force. There were six basic concepts related to the buoyant force constructed based on the predict-observe-explain strategy (POE) with the interactive computer simulation (i.e., the CoSci learning platform) in the learning activity. The learning activity on the CoSci learning platform consisted of eight pie charts such as 1) main question pie chart, 2) density pie chart, 3) water level pie chart, 4) volume pie chart, 5) mass pie chart, 6) weight pie chart, 7) submerged depth pie chart, and 8) answer pie chart. We developed an Authentic GeometryGo (AGG) app to help students application of geometry in authentic contexts through authentic measurements and peer assessments. The study included an experimental group (EG) using an AGG app and a control group (CG) using paper-based methods. The results showed that the EG outperformed the CG in terms of estimation. Measuring authentic geometry shapes using the app could foster students' estimation. Furthermore, meaningful peer assessments with visual representations in authentic contexts can facilitate the evaluation of peers' work and improve students' geometry understanding. Therefore, we encourage educators to use augmented reality with appropriate learning activities to sharpen students' measurement quality and visual representations by measuring real geometry shapes and applying mathematics knowledge in authentic contexts. © 2008-2011 IEEE.

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of smart mechanisms (i.e., personalization, contextualization, and socialization) on geometry learning supported by Smart-UG, a mobile application with the integration of augmented reality (AR) to facilitate authentic learning and provide learners with some features in measuring and applying geometric concepts in a real-world environment. To investigate the impact of the technology with smart mechanisms on student learning achievements (i.e., geometry ability (GA) and problem-solving skill (PSS), we conducted a quasi-experiment with the participation of fifth-grade students (n = 52). They were divided into two groups (i.e., experimental and control group) and carried out two stages of learning activity with an independent experiment which is underpinned by a set of problem-solving activities. Stage 1 aimed to investigate the impact of personalization and contextualization mechanisms, while stage 2 focuses on assessing socialization's impact on geometry learning. The results showed that the experimental group students achieve good performance in geometry measurement and problem-solving compared to those in the control group. It implied that our proposed application with smart mechanisms can benefit learners to improve their geometry understanding and skill. A positive attitude and high intention by the students toward Smart-UG also signify system utilization in the future. Therefore, this study has the potential to be applied in more complex geometry learning with enhanced smart mechanisms. IEEE

Recognition technologies had been prevailing and widely used for EFL learning. We investigated the different recognitions used for EFL writing based on image-to-text, translated speech-to-text, and location-to-text recognitions – ITR, TSTR, and LTR. A quasi-experiment was implemented for 12 weeks in a vocational high school with experimental and control groups in two stages. Pre-test, posttests 1 and 2, questionnaires, and interviews were conducted and analyzed. Experimental learners, who wrote writing based on ITR and TSTR, outperformed control learners who wrote that based on TSTR only. Also, the experimental learners, who wore writing based on ITR, TSTR, and LTR, outperformed the control learners who wrote that based on ITR and TSTR. Particularly, LTR was beneficial for identifying controlling ideas and addressing the writing topics. ITR was beneficial for brainstorming and generating more ideas. TSTR was beneficial for yielding and transferring writing contents into words. The multiple recognitions were beneficial for most EFL writers, especially for low-ability language writers. Most writers were interested in describing based on authentic context learning. However, they complained about the low accuracy of LTR and TSTR and the difficulty of ITR texts when writing. Accordingly, the LTR database with various categories of places, the generation of ITR based on the language abilities of learners, and the higher accuracy of TSTR should be strictly considered when applying multiple recognitions for EFL writing. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Most English foreign language (EFL) studies focus solely on human beings. This research explores how edge computing can facilitate learning for all things. The XoT (Xducation of Things) framework was proposed to educate both human and all things. All things encompass two terms: AI-Agent and smartthings (covering physical and digital smart objects). At the core of this framework is Smart Question Answer Forwarding Mechanism (SQA-Forwarding), specifically designed to assist all things in building knowledge. To demonstrate this, the smartXoT environment was developed based on XoT framework, and its impacts on EFL learners was assessed. A quasi-experimental study involving 26 EFL learners, divided into an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG), examined the differences in learning achievement of smartthings and EFL learners when using the smartXoT environment with/without SQA-Forwarding. Findings, on one hand, indicated that smartthings in the EG developed knowledge bases greater than those in the CG. On the other hand, the interaction between EFL learners and smartthings with SQA-Forwarding significantly improved learners' writing skills, with revisions playing a crucial role in enhancing writing quality. Thus, the XoT framework offers a novel and promising approach to educating both humans and all things. © 2013 IEEE.

This study introduces and evaluates the Eternal learning Model Trainer System (ELMTS), a pioneering approach in data processing and model generation designed to transcend the limitations of human knowledge sharing. ELMTS uses speech-to-text and social media mining together to create detailed digital profiles from real-life and online activities, improving data integration and model accuracy for new ways of continuous knowledge sharing. Moreover, by employing the robust algorithms of GPT 3.5, ELMTS constructs detailed digital profiles, analyzing and interpreting data to recognize individual patterns, preferences, and knowledge areas. This leads to a Question and Answer (QnA) system that acts like a digital twin, reflecting the knowledge and experiences of its human counterpart. The system's performance, evaluated through metrics such as correctness accuracy, relevance, completeness, and linguistic accuracy, displayed significant improvement post-user enhancements, indicating enhanced precision in data handling and improved response quality. User feedback further underscored ELMTS's effectiveness in aspects like adaptability, decision-making, and personal growth while pointing out challenges in information overload and ethical concerns, thus shaping future refinements for the system. ELMTS aims to preserve individual wisdom and contribute to the collective human intellect, offering a novel, sustainable approach to knowledge sharing and learning. This research is crucial to realizing a more efficient, user-centric, and accurate knowledge-sharing platform.

In this study, a new self-healing strategy that can simultaneously recover the corrosion resistance and the adhesion strength of coatings was introduced. The coating was based on a shape memory epoxy resin containing ethylene vinyl acetate(EVA) microspheres loaded with Ce(NO_(3))_(3)inhibitors, and was cured at a relatively high temperature to facilitate the fusion of adjacent microspheres for a strengthened self-healing effect. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and scanning electrochemical microscopy(SECM) results demonstrated that the shape memory effect of epoxy matrix, the filling of molten EVA microspheres as well as the release of Ce(NO_(3))_(3)inhibitors contributed synergistically to suppress the corrosion reaction at the coating damage. After healing, the low frequency impedance modulus of the coatings containing Ce(NO_(3))_(3)-EVA microspheres was three orders of magnitude higher than that of the blank epoxy coating. The adhesion strength of the coatings containing Ce(NO_(3))_(3)-EVA microspheres on the metal substrate was also largely repaired thanks to the strong bonding effect of the EVA microspheres.

The conventional way to search the information on the internet usually uses search engines, however, the results only provide textual information. There has been a noticeable gap in student engagement, particularly among young generations like elementary to high school students, who prefer interactive learning methods. Specifically, there is a need to focus on disseminating information about nuclear energy, particularly its application in nuclear power plants in accordance with Indonesia’s master plan about nuclear energy as it is essential for the younger generation to be informed. Therefore, we developed an Android mobile app namely AR-Deni with Augmented Reality (AR) technology that interactively provides information through touch and voice chat with an animated 3D virtual educator. To answer the question, it utilizes retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology with verified documents that could elevate students' curiosity and understanding about nuclear energy information while ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the information provided. Further, we used extreme programming (XP) as a development methodology to plan and test the app. We test the app with user acceptance testing (UAT) and performance testing with 12 scenarios to interact in Q&A. The results showed that the AR-Deni developed with the XP method and passed the 100% scenario in UAT. Regarding the performance, the RAG needed more response time to find the answer from specific questions rather than general questions. Hence, the AR-Deni could be used as an interactive virtual nuclear educator for learning media.

Technological solutions to fostering students’ moral courage: an augmented reality-based contextual gaming approach

Fostering students’ knowledge and courage to face illegal or immoral problems is a critical aim in educational settings. However, it is challenging for students who lack knowledge and social experience to comprehend the sins behind the immoral cases and have the moral courage to deal with those problems. Therefore, in the present study, an approach combining AR with game-based learning (ARGBL) was proposed. Furthermore, a quasi-experimental design was adopted to examine the effectiveness of the approach in terms of developing students’ moral courage regarding anti-corruption and their learning satisfaction. The participants were recruited from two classes in a university. One class with 30 students was assigned to be the experimental group who played the developed game for 4 weeks;the other class with 30 students was the control group who learned with the conventional technology-based learning (C-TL) mode (i.e. the teacher gave lectures using slides and multimedia). The results revealed that the experimental group’s moral courage and learning satisfaction was significantly higher than those of the control group. The findings of this study provide a reference for those intending to foster students’ moral courage when facing other immoral cases. © 2024 The Author(s). Most studies of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing usually used grammar checking to help EFL learners to check writing errors. However, it is not enough since EFL learners have to learn how to create more meaningful content, particularly using their surroundings in authentic contexts. Therefore, we develop one app, Ubiquitous English (UEnglish), with recognition technology, particularly Image-to-Text Recognition (ITR) texts to provide the vocabulary and description from authentic pictures, and generative-AI that can generate meaningful questions and clarifications to trigger EFL learners to write more. In addition, EFL learners need to answer the question from generative-AI before they receive the clarification. Hence, we proposed a Smart Questioning-Answering-Clarification (QAC) mechanism to help EFL writing. A total of 35 participants were assigned into two groups, experimental groups (EG) with 19 learners and control groups (CG) with 16 learners with/without Smart QAC mechanism support, respectively. In this study, the quasi-experiment was conducted over five weeks and we used quantitative analysis methods. The results revealed that the EG with ITR-texts and Smart QAC had a significant difference with CG in the learning behaviors and post-test. Furthermore, EG could write more meaningful words in the assignments. Therefore, the Smart QAC mechanism could facilitate EFL learners to enhance their EFL writing in authentic contexts. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
