In this study, we report a work of using one-to-one technologies to motivate a class of elementary students in extensive practice of mental calculation. Specifically, each student in the classroom uses a notebook computer to practice mental calculation. The goal of extensive practice is to increase procedural fluency in mental calculation. Generally, except for a small portion of highly motivated students, the rest of students easily get bored in extensive practice and soon become reluctant to practice more. To motivate the students to practice mental calculation more, some gaming elements were implanted to promote student engagement in extensive practice. As a result, all the students practiced a lot and encouraging improvements of student learning achievement were reported by the classroom teacher. Among others, their achievement scores of a subsequent summative evaluation were dramatically improved in comparison with other classes in the same school.

This study intended to use CELL system to aid storytelling activity for the enhancement of creativity of seven hearing-impaired students. The design of CELL was based on the idea of connectivism and employed an open source on the Internet. Cell allows storytelling members to exchange episodes and ideas with each other via network. Members can search and collect various resources on the Internet. Furthermore, members can exchange their story artifacts as well as publish their stories in the public area. Video taping, action logs, answers of storytelling activity, and interviews were used to collect data. The data collected were analyzed by the method of ethnographic microanalysis of interaction. The results of this study demonstrated that developing a collaborative story creation platform could connect the resources of the Internet and integrate the materials of multimedia, as well as provide a public area for sharing the collaborative artifacts. It could also enrich the resources of inspiration and make possible developing story plots in multi representations when the hearing-impaired students performed the storytelling activity.

Data-driven learning based on shift reduce parsing algorithms has emerged dependency parsing and shown excellent performance to many Tree-banks. In this paper, we investigate the extension of those methods while considerably improved the runtime and training time efficiency via L2-SVMs. We also present several properties and constraints to enhance the parser completeness in runtime. We further integrate root-level and bottom-level syntactic information by using sequential taggers. The experimental results show the positive effect of the root-level and bottom-level features that improve our parser from 81.17% to 81.41% and 81.16% to 81.57% labeled attachment scores with modified Yamada's and Nivre's method, respectively on the Chinese Treebank. In comparison to well-known parsers, such as Malt-Parser (80.74%) and MSTParser (78.08%), our methods produce not only better accuracy, but also drastically reduced testing time in 0.07 and 0.11, respectively. © 2008. In Chinese, most of the language processing starts from word segmentation and part-of-speech (POS) tagging. These two steps tokenize the word from a sequence of characters and predict the syntactic labels for each segmented word. In this paper, we present two distinct sequential tagging models for the above two tasks. The first word segmentation model was basically similar to previous work which made use of conditional random fields (CRF) and set of predefined dictionaries to recognize word boundaries. Second, we revise and modify support vector machine-based chunking model to label the POS tag in the tagging task. Our method in the WS task achieves moderately rank among all participants, while in the POS tagging task, it reaches very competitive results. © IJCNLP 2008. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose the English dialogue companion (EDC) system to help elementary school students learn second language, as English. Learners can practice conversation with the EDC system in English. In order to motivate the learners, we design the three learning activities to enhance the environment of English learning, which are the choice of learning companion phase, the conversation phase, and the teaching phase. We also conducted a pilot study to evaluate the EDC system. The results showed the subjects agreed that the system is positive and useful. For the most of learners, we found that the most favorite learning activity is to teach learning companion. In addition, the greater part of learners liked the same gender learning companion. And learners selected the learning companion depended on the learning companion is regards as a classmate or a teacher.

One-to-one technology is getting more and more attention, and it will start to make changes to education. However, it is not easy to change the traditional classroom, most teachers don't want to alter their teaching habits, if we put computer into classroom but no appropriate pedagogy and subject matter accompanied, computers in classroom will lost their value. Here we apply self-paced learning as the pedagogy in one-to-one classroom, and develop a monitoring system to help teacher to handle the classroom. A preliminary study was proceeded to test the usability of the system.

Mobile learning brings us more learning opportunities due to the characteristics of learning devices and wireless computing. Recently, game-based learning also provides promising benefits in childrenpsilas leaning. Therefore, how to design a game-based learning environment in handheld devices by combining an existing game with different learning activities is a significant research issue. In this paper, we attempt to incorporate game elements with the learning environment design in the PDA for students. Three considerations for the learning environment design in the hand-held devices are discussed: game element design, small screen design, and learner-centered design. According to these three considerations, a pet-nurturing game environment in the PDA, My-Mini-Pet system, is developed, including three components: emotional attachment, learning guidance, and costume show. The design rationale behind the My-Mini-Pet system is that taking good care of the Mini-My-Pet is actually improving the learnerpsilas learning status.

Recently, many researchers believe that learning motivation and interest can be enhanced by participating in educational games. Video capture virtual reality technologies provide a possibility for designing games. However, it has not been widely used in the field of educational games. A digital game-based learning system, called PILE (physical interactive learning environment), was developed which utilized video capture virtual reality technologies and was applied in educational setting with learning activity design. The learning activity was designed by integrating the PILE system to English learning materials of the third grade of elementary school along with the phonics in a digital game-based learning design. An experiment of using the PILE system was conducted for examining English learning achievement,motivation and attitude with two groups. The experimental group used the PILE system for English learning. In contrast, the control group used PowerPoint slides for English learning. The result of the experiment shows that studentspsila English achievement is enhanced by integrating the PILE system into English learning activity with game-based learning design. Positive learning motivation and attitude on English learning was also found.

During schooling, individual ability differences are inevitable. Lowability students, when always performing worse, may feel discouraged and frustrated during learning; high-ability and hence better-performance students may not find learning interesting as well when facing easy challenges all the time. This study proposes an equal opportunity tactic in order to moderate the differences in ability perception by manipulating the challenge of tasks for every student. A trail test was also conducted to preliminarily evaluate the influences on student behaviors.

Game competition has promising potential to be a powerful pedagogical strategy. To maximize the benefits and alleviate its possible negative effects, a substitutive competition design is proposed in this paper. The substitutive competition is a kind of mirror competition, a competition of pet-styled virtual characters that represent learnerspsila open learner models. An animal companion system,named My-Pet system, was implemented to realize such concept. A preliminary system evaluation was also conducted in an elementary school to examine the effect of the substitutive competition in the My-Pet system. The results revealed that the substitutive competition was helpful to students' increased motivation and time-on-task that further contributed to improved learning efficiency.
