This study proposed a groupware and a flow of learning activity to guide students in learning arithmetic word problem with handheld devices. Appropriating the concept of semi-situated learning which was aided by the 4-frame comic embedded into the PDA, this study expected the comic to play as a catalyst to trigger students in articulating some theme associated with the content of the 4-frame comic. The scenario and features of this groupware are presented in the paper and a preliminary study at an elementary school is also described and discussed.

Bill Gates mentioned in Scientific America that robot will enter every home in ten year the same as personal computers have entered into almost every home in ten year. This project is to response to this trend, and to think about how robot can enhance learning, for example, robot can be as learning tools, teaching tools, learning companions, teaching partner, or some other models to enhance learning.

A simple CMOS squarer circuit is proposed. The circuit has a Giga Hertz frequency response that has advantages to be used in communication systems. The proposed circuit focuses on the extension to ultra wide bandwidth. The circuit is based on 0.18 mum CMOS technology simulated using PSPICE level 7. The circuit has wide dynamic range, GHz-bandwidth response and low power consumption. The proposed circuit has been simulated with SPICE and achieved -3 dB bandwidth of 10.96 GHz. The power consumption is about 86.51muW with a plusmn 1 V power supply voltage. Simulation result shows that the proposed squarer can accommodate the whole UWB bandwidth.

In this paper, we propose a new PAPR reduction by using a partial transmit sequences (PTS) method with coded side information (SI) technique. These methods are used in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. The OFDM employs orthogonal sub-carriers for data modulation. These sub-carriers unexpectedly present a large peak to average power ratio (PAPR) in some cases. In order to reduce PAPR, the sequence of input data is partitioned into disjoint sub-block of PTS. If number of sub-block increases, high efficiency of PAPR reduction can be obtained. However, a quite large calculation cost must be demanded and thus it is impossible to obtain the optimum PTS. In the proposed method, we introduce a coded side information technique assuming the pseudo-optimum condition into the PTS. The total calculation cost becomes drastically reduced and side information bits for recovering original data in demodulation. In simulation results, the proposed method demonstrated the improvement of PAPR and bit error rate (BER) performance.

In this paper, we present a new string pattern matching-based passage ranking algorithm for extending traditional text-based QA toward videoQA. Users interact with our videoQA system through natural language questions, while our system returns passage fragments with corresponding video clips as answers. We collect 75.6 hours videos and 253 Chinese questions for evaluation. The experimental results showed that our method outperformed six top-performed ranking models. It is 10.16% better than the second best method (language model) in relatively MRR score and 6.12% in precision rate. Besides, we also show that the use of a trained Chinese word segmentation tool did decrease the overall videoQA performance where most ranking algorithms dropped at least 10% in relatively MRR, precision, and answer pattern recall rates. © 2007 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper, we present a three-step multilingual dependency parser based on a deterministic shift-reduce parsing algorithm. Different from last year, we separate the root-parsing strategy as sequential labeling task and try to link the neighbor word dependences via a near neighbor parsing. The outputs of the root and neighbor parsers were encoded as features for the shift-reduce parser. In addition, the learners we used for the two parsers and the shift-reduce parser are quite different (conditional random fields and the modified finite-Newton method support vector machines). We found that our method could benefit from the two-preprocessing stages. To speed up training, in this year, we employ the MFN-SVM (modified finite- Newton method support vector machines) which can be learned in linear time. The experimental results show that our method achieved the middle rank over the 23 teams. We expect that our method could be further improved via well-tuned parameter validations for different languages. © 2007 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Bingo is a universally known, popular, and easy-toplay game. Following Bingo rules with some modifications, we have designed and implemented a game, called EduBingo, for practicing mathematics fractions. The game was implemented and experimented in a 'one-to-one' technology enhanced classroom, where every student learns with a wireless enabled computing device. The experiment investigated students' preferences, system usability, as well as the effects on their affective states of a grade 4 class with 22 students. The result of the questionnaire indicates that the usability of EduBingo is acceptable and there was increase of various affective levels of the students. The data collected by the system, after analysis, implies that, for most students, accuracy and efficiency of solving fraction questions increased. The preliminary result also suggests some directions for further research. © 2007 IEEE.

The rapid progress of computer and network technologies has attracted educational researchers to study the strategies and the effects of applying information technology in learning activities. Although previous research demonstrated the benefits of applying information technologies to learning process, its difficulty was also reveled. One of the major difficulties is owing to the lack of a learning environment that can record the learning portfolio of using information technologies in education, such that the teacher can analyze and evaluate the learning performance of students, and hence the teaching strategies can be adjusted accordingly. In this paper, we propose a web-search learning environment based on meta-index approach, which is able to assist the teachers in analyzing student learning behaviors of using search engines for problem solving. An experiment on 161 K4 students has been conducted to evaluate the benefits of this approach. Experimental results showed that the novel approach is able to assist the teachers to acquire more about the learning status of students, and hence more constructive suggestions can be given accordingly. ©2007 IEEE.

Kernel methods such as support vector machines (SVMs) have attracted a great deal of popularity in the machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) communities. Polynomial kernel SVMs showed very competitive accuracy in many NLP problems, like part-of-speech tagging and chunking. However, these methods are usually too inefficient to be applied to large dataset and real time purpose. In this paper, we propose an approximate method to analogy polynomial kernel with efficient data mining approaches. To prevent exponential-scaled testing time complexity, we also present a new method for speeding up SVM classifying which does independent to the polynomial degree d. The experimental results showed that our method is 16.94 and 450 times faster than traditional polynomial kernel in terms of training and testing respectively. © 2007 Association for Computational Linguistics
