Individual ability differences are an everlasting phenomenon in a classroom. Competitive learning games that aim at drawing students' attention and excitement will inevitably hurt the self-esteem of those students with lower-skill levels. This paper describes the design of a small group competitive classroom game called AnswerMatching. Besides, we propose an approach to resolving the individual ability difference problem, called uneven chance tactic. A pilot study of the game with this tactic is also reported.

The rapid progress of computer and network technologies has attracted educational researchers to study the strategies and the effects of applying information technology in learning activities. Although previous research demonstrated the benefits of applying information technologies to learning process, its difficulty was also reveled. One of the major difficulties is owing to the lack of a learning environment that can record the learning portfolio of using information technologies in education, such that the teacher can analyze and evaluate the learning performance of students, and hence the teaching strategies can be adjusted accordingly. In this paper, we propose a Web-search learning environment based on meta-index approach, which is able to assist the teachers in analyzing student learning behaviors of using search engines for problem solving. An experiment on 161 K4 students has been conducted to evaluate the benefits of this approach. Experimental results showed that the novel approach is able to assist the teachers to acquire more about the learning status of students, and hence more constructive suggestions can be given accordingly.

A gigahertz wideband analog multiplier is proposed. The multiplier based on the MOS cascade operation circuit. The inputs are in voltage mode and become in current mode after multiplication. The result shows that the multiplier can be applied for UWB communications. The circuit is based on 0.18 mum CMOS technology simulated using HSPICE with level 49.

In this paper, we propose a new PAPR reduction technique by a hybrid algorithm based on a partial transmit sequence (PTS) and adaptive peak power reduction (APPR) methods. This technique is used in a system based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). OFDM has many orthogonally modulated subcarriers which unexpectedly give a large peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and tends to reduce the power efficiency of a RF amplifier. A sequence of input data is rearranged by PTS for the reduction of PAPR and then fed to APPR process in the proposed system. The APPR method controls the peak level of the modulation signal by an adaptive algorithm. It reduces modulation signals over a predefined range. A proposed reduction method consists of these two methods and realizes both advantages at the same time. In simulation results, the proposed method shows the improvement on PAPR and also the high performance on bit error rate performance of an OFDM system.

The WATERS network (WATer and Environmental Research Systems network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. Asian languages are far from most western-style in their non-separate word sequence especially Chinese. The preliminary step of Asian-like language processing is to find the word boundaries between words. In this paper, we present a general purpose model for both Chinese word segmentation and named entity recognition. This model was built on the word sequence classification with probability model, i.e., conditional random fields (CRF). We used a simple feature set for CRF which achieves satisfactory classification result on the two tasks. Our model achieved 91.00 in F rate in UPUC-Treebank data, and 78.71 for NER task. © 2006 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper, we propose a three-step multilingual dependency parser, which generalizes an efficient parsing algorithm at first phase, a root parser and postprocessor at the second and third stages. The main focus of our work is to provide an efficient parser that is practical to use with combining only lexical and part-ofspeech features toward language independent parsing. The experimental results show that our method outperforms Maltparser in 13 languages. We expect that such an efficient model is applicable for most languages.

Various wireless and wired terminals have been well developed, but there are big differences between a compact mobile phone and a desktop PC connecting to the high-speed Internet, on their performances and qualities. If we could switch among those different terminals adaptively according to availability, quality, cost and usability, the most appropriate terminal can be always used. In the ubiquitous network environment, various sensors and actuators will be connected to the networks and new communication services are expected to come out. As a new communication service candidate, in this paper, we show cross-device handover technology which switches an on-going multimedia communication session from an actuator to another actuator. We also show a context sensing platform for providing context-aware services to the mobile users. We realize a ubiquitous network application that the sensors collect the user's current information, a server in the network estimates the user's context, and appropriate information is provided to the user by the optimum way according to the contextual information.

National institute of Information and Communications technology of Japan (NICT) completed a project on new-generation mobile communications networks for beyond 3G or 4G in March 2006. This paper presents our vision of new-generation mobile communications networks from networking perspective and their capabilities to be offered: fast and large-capacity handover, cross-network handover, cross-device handover, and interworking between real and cyber worlds. Then, Metro Mobile Ring network technology for the first capability, MIRAI architecture for the second and third capabilities, and other works are presented.

The era of 1: 1 educational computing environment where each student has one mobile computing device is not far away. When such technology designed for individuals is applied to group learning, several student grouping problems could be encountered. In this paper, three issues are identified to illustrate the vision of the 1:2 educational computing environments. In a 1:2 classroom, besides the mobile devices, students also have their own computing desks, i.e. MatrixDesks, to solve the potential student grouping problems. By putting MatrixDesks together, a small group can form a shared working space with the combined desktops immediately and they can use their own digital pens as the input devices to work on and talk over it. Meanwhile, the students use their mobile devices to handle the related individual tasks. MatrixDesks is a coordination of applying the mobile computing and invisible computing to collaborative learning, which will lead to the accomplishment of 1:2 educational computing environments.
