There are much more learning materials and learning activities in the recent elementary curriculum than the past. Then it becomes heavy loads for teachers to prepare and arrange the teaching plan, and students feel more complex to capture learning progress of the curriculum. We design a curriculum and activity management system, which supports the management of the curriculum for teachers and help students catch key points of the course. With the using of this system, they can pay more attention on curriculum progressing.

learning passport is a self-maintained record of learning achievements at different levels, which may serve as a goal-setter, guide, and motivation sustainer for learning. This paper describes a framework for mobile learning supported by learning passport. This framework emphasizes using the items in the learning passport to motivate and guide students to move and explore the answers at outdoors with mobile devices. The study also designed a system, and conducted an experiment, where 32 elementary school students used PDAs (personal digital assistants) to explore the woody plants in the school garden, according to the directions of the items in the learning passport shown on PDAs. The results of a questionnaire reveal that students are interested in the system and think it can enhance their learning achievement.

The Internet can be used to promote collaborative learning among students. However, since the Web-based collaborative learning environment relies entirely on the availability of computers and the Internet, students do not always have access to the system, leading to doubt in the interaction among the students, and reducing the effectiveness of collaborative learning. For this reason, this study employed the activity monitoring and ubiquitous activity awareness through SMS messages in a GSM network to enhance the learning activity awareness. In the experimental stage, a Web-based TGT collaborative learning activity was conducted at an undergraduate university. The analytical results demonstrate that awareness of the collaborative learning context significantly increased student participation in learning activity and improving student performance.

Active learning enables learners to actively engage in learning. learning not only transfers material to students for learning, but also encourages greater mental engagement and more extensive student-student and student-instructor interaction than does a typical lecture class. Peer instruction (PI) engages students in active learning by achieving continuous instructor-student interaction in a physics lecture. However, the methodologies and the effectiveness of implementing PI for elementary school students have seldom been clarified. This study explores the possibility of adopting PI in an elementary science classroom. The research considerations of the study are as follows: (1) how wireless technology can enhance PI in elementary science classroom; (2) how a teacher can engage students in pre-class reading, and (3) whether elementary school students have sufficient social skills to perform a PI discussion? These questions are examined by observing how the PI pedagogical model worked with a wireless response system in elementary science classroom. Based on the observation, this study also proposes a way of improving the PI learning experience of elementary school students by adding experiments and observations during peer discussion to explain concepts and phenomena in physics.

Microarray technology allows large-scale parallel measurements of the expression of many thousands genes and thus aiding in the development of efficient cancer diagnosis and classification platforms. In this paper, we apply the genetic algorithm and the silhouette statistic in conjunction with several distance functions to the problem of multi-class prediction. We examine two widely used sets of gene expression data, measured across sets of tumors, and present the results of classification accuracy on these two datasets by our methods. Our best success rate of tumor classification has better accuracy than many previously reported methods and it provides a useful method towards a complete tool in this domain.

With the emergence of information technology, wireless communication and mobile devices are the newest applications in education. The wireless technology enhanced classroom (WiTEC) integrates wireless local area network, mobile learning devices, and client-server architecture to support instruction and learning activities in classroom. This paper introduces the framework of three learning activity levels, namely learning function, learning episode, and learning flow, as the basis to design and develop an integrated system to support various kinds of learning activities in WiTEC. A teacher can use the system to form new learning flows before class and to implement them in class. A two-stage evaluation was conducted in three elementary classes to investigate the usability and feasibility of the proposed system. The participated teachers indicated that the integrity mechanism of three learning activity levels eases the burden of preparing, implementing, and reviewing instruction and learning.

Mobile technology extends accessibility to Internet and intranet anytime and anywhere, thus enabling more novel forms of interactions to emerge in learning activities. learning content is important in various learning scenarios. However, even a perfect learning material still must be matched with an appropriate learning activity. Thus, learning content involves learning activity plus appropriate material for use in that activity based on T.W. Chan (2004). To construct the content development infrastructure, this study proposed a supporting framework and system for learning content development.

In this study, an English contest event with across-classroom mode was held in the connected classroom equipped with wireless remote controller (EduClick). The learning scenario of contest event embedded into event-driven learning model is designed by integrating activity-centered design and learner-centered design to conduct students to learn individually before event and collaboratively participate with classmates during the event stage. The contest event is held by the activity-centered design. A Web site with Web-based content and online testing system is built by learner-centered design. We desire the students to learn for participating in the event. Connected classroom is an environment constructed by connecting classrooms located in the same or different schools, or schools of different countries. More various learning activities could be held in the environment. Here, we built a prototype of connected classroom using the simplest wireless and mobile technologies and held contest event.

Many researchers used computer technology over the last decade to build a virtual learning community in Web-based learning environment. However, building and managing a sustainable learning community remains challenging. One of the goals of this study is to try to identify some major events that affect learning community growth, and another goal is employ these events to develop a regression model for forecasting accumulated effective users in learning communities in the future. This study uses a Web-based learning system, as a preliminary analysis environment. Four major events that influence learning communities were identified, and these events were used to establish a regression model for calculating accumulated effective users. Future works will attempt to prove that the forecast regression model affects community building.
