Nanodiamond holds great interest in a variety of optical applications, the properties being correlated with surface modification, and the presence of both impurities and defects (contained either on their surface or within the crystal structure). Undecyl-nanodiamond produced by attachment of 1-undecene onto the nanodiamond surface could be a good candidate as a luminescent marker in the future;therefore, understanding of its optical properties is essential. In this work, the optical properties of the acid-purified nanodiamond and undecyl-nanodiamond were characterised using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the characteristic diamond Raman signal at 1330 cm-1 was still observed after chemical surface modification, while the signal at ∼1600 cm -1 (attributed to graphite bands) disappeared after the modification. Broad photoluminescence emission is detected in the range 1.5-2.5 eV (500-800 nm), as typically found for isolated nanodiamond;these emission bands became narrower with attachment of 1-undecene as compared to the sample without surface functionalisation. The observed emission could be related to structural disorder on the nanodiamond surface. The temperature dependence of the intensity, peak position and band widths of each sample has been characterised. Copyright © Materials Research Society 2013.

The popularization of LED and the development of the control technology of the lights provide chromatic lights such as a red, blue, green. The chromatic lights are expected from the psychology and the physiological effect of color. And it is predicted that chromatic lights are innovated positively into a life space. This research is about the image of chromatic lights is examined using heart rate variability and psychological methodology, i.e., paired comparison test. The subjects of paired comparison test were 14 healthy participants (age 21.9±3.7 years old). The subjects of heart rate variability were 7 healthy participants (age 24.0±3.9 years old). We examined from the two viewpoints. 1. In the results of paired comparison test, the score of the white-ice, yellow and green demonstrated greater scores compared with the other. The score of blue, red and pink decreased to lower values compared with the other. 2. In the results of heart rate variability, the mean values of HF of white-Ice, yellow and green demonstrated greater values compared with the other. The mean values of HF of blue, red and pink decreased to lower values compared with the other. It is thus concluded that, using physiological parameters and questionnaire, it is possible to analyze the effect of chromatic lights on living organisms. © 2013 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Our previous time-of-flight studies with two-dimensional polygonal simulations and one-and three-dimensional experiments showed that the sound-velocity in granular materials in one and two dimensions is of the order of 10% of that of the bulk material, while in three dimensions with spherical beads, it is only of the order of one percent. The conclusion was that the force network in three dimensions leads to a reduction of the sound velocity compared to two dimensions. With our newly completed fully three dimensional discrete element method with polyhedral particles, we investigate the relation between particle shape, size dispersion and sound velocity. The force-law is able to reproduce the sound velocity of the bulk material for space-filling particle packings. We find that the sound velocities in polyhedral assemblies are about 3% to 5% of the bulk sound velocities. This means that the influence of the particle geometry on the contact is significant. Aggregates with particles with many surfaces show higher sound velocities than those with sharp edges. Additionally, solitonic waves were observed which propagated in front of the sound-waves, but only in a relatively short range.

This paper focuses on the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) synchronization problem for event-driven measurement applications. The objective is twofold: i) to provide high accuracy in the area where an event is detected, ii) to ensure a long network life time. These two objectives are conflicting. In fact, to increase the synchronization accuracy packets must be exchanged at higher rate, thus affecting the network lifetime. In several interesting applications a trade-off can be achieved based on the observation that, if the goal is to observe a localized event, only the portion of the network surrounding the detected event requires a higher accuracy. The proposed algorithm represents a formalization of this idea. Simulations are done to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

In this paper design and control of planar cable-driven parallel robots are studied in an experimental prospective. Since in this class of manipulators, cable tensionability conditions must be met, feedback control of such robots becomes more challenging than for conventional robots. To meet these conditions, internal force control structure is introduced and used in addition to a PID control scheme to ensure that all cables remain in tension. A robust PID controller is proposed for partial knowledge of the robot, to keep the tracking errors bounded. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is examined through experiments on K.N. Toosi planar cable-driven robot and it is shown that the proposed control structure is able to provide suitable performance in practice.

The paper describes a substantial extension of Norm Optimal Iterative Learning control (NOILC) that permits tracking of a class of finite dimensional reference signals whilst simultaneously minimizing a quadratic cost function. Motivated by practical problems in automation and control, this enables point-to-point motion tasks to be performed whilst reducing effects such as payload spillage, vibration tendencies and actuator wear. Solutions combine feedforward and feedback actions, and are experimentally tested using a robotic arm.

Norm Optimal Iterative Learning control for Planar Tracking Tasks

The Iterative Learning control (ILC) problem in which tracking is only required at a subset of isolated time points along the trial duration has recently gained significant attention since it addresses the practical needs of many *** paper extends the framework by embedding simultaneous iterative convergence of subsets of outputs to reference trajectories on subintervals. This enables it to tackle tasks which mix ‘point to point’ movements with linear tracking requirements, which substantially broadens the application domain (e.g. to include automation tasks which include welding or cutting movements, or human motion control where the movement is restricted by the task to straight line and/or planar segments). A solution to the problem is presented in the framework of Norm Optimal ILC (NOILC), providing well-defined convergence properties, design guidelines and supporting experimental results.

Usually when modeling a real process the effects of nonlinearities must be taken into account. A road traffic sector is one such process. Considering it from a macroscopic point of view, the sector is modeled both as a nonlinear and as a linearized process. An I/O model is proposed and a RST control algorithm is used to ensure the imposed performances for the closed loop system. The robustness of the system is obtained by determining the modulus margin and based upon it the admissible nonlinearities are analyzed in order to determine the limits between which the system maintains its stability. ©2012 IEEE.
