The tilt angle control of variable displacement hydraulic pumps is susceptible to changes in dynamic characteristics that depend on operating points and load pressure, and hence high control performance is hard to achieve. In this study, a variable displacement pump without a mechanical feedback mechanism is focused on and its displacement control system is designed using a model predictive control (MPC) method that can consider various design constraints. In particular, the adaptive MPC is introduced for accepting dynamic characteristics change and load pressure. The results clarified that the difference due to the variations in the model order was negligible for the steady-state deviation and settling time;however, the overshoot variation and the average of absolute tracking error could be attenuated using a higher order model for load pressure changes. Furthermore, the settling time and tracking error were considerably reduced by increasing the prediction and control horizons properly. © 2023 IEEE.

Recent developments in autonomous vehicle technologies and applications gain a lot of interest by the public, as the popularity of both driver assistance and automated driving systems increase. One of the most promising aspect of the autonomous vehicle compared to conventional human driven vehicle is the increased level of safety. Machine learning techniques enables to achieve fast and efficient control actions compared to model based techniques. However, the advantages of a more conservative model based controller are their better robustness properties. In this paper a synergy of the two control philosophy is presented through a trajectory tracking control design for autonomous vehicles. A supervised reinforcement learning (RL) control method is introduced, where a robust Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) controller supervises the operation of the trained RL agent. Thus, in case sensor noise is detected, the guaranteed stability LPV controller takes over the steering control action. In order to demonstrate the operation of the proposed method, three different simulations have been evaluated and compared in CarSim simulation environment.

In today's high-tech world, robots are increasingly used in industry and human assistance, raising safety concerns. This paper proposes a Reachability-based Trajectory Design (RTD) method to ensure safe robot motion. By computing the robot's Forward Reachable Set (FRS), a safe trajectory is chosen for the robot to follow. This approach enhances robot safety and reliability, making them more applicable across industries. Offline RTD and FRS calculations combined with Nonlinear Model Predictive control (NMPC) further improve navigation, motion planning, and control precision. This unique combination significantly improves robot operations, ensuring safety and efficiency. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Energy communities are emerging entities which need their own Information and Communication System. Resilience is a key metric of such communities, and it has to be implemented for both energy supply versus public network outages and for its information system versus cyber-attacks, acting as cyber-citadels which have to resist external malicious attacks while having also digital interactions with external entities. The paper presents solutions for a resilient energy community with appropriate implementations of digital interaction for data exchange, in order to acquire external energy service for specialized companies and to deliver also information and communication-related services for external users. Principles of a Contractual Data Protection Regulation are presented, as an adaptation of data protection tailored for automated energy services and based on secure data exchange. The principles are verified in a demonstration project which has also external entities with digital interaction. © 20XX IEEE.

High-energy excitonic effects in single-layer graphene

Using high-energy polarization-dependent reflectivity, we discover high-energy resonant excitons at room temperature in single-layer graphene. The resonant excitons occur at ∼10.04 and ∼12.29 eV arising from transitions between parallel σ and π* states along Γ−K as well as σ and σ* states at the M point, respectively. The observation of spectral weight transfer signifies electronic corelation and that the two-dimensional nature and low-energy properties are strongly coupled with high-energy bands. Our result shows the importance of electron-electron and electron-hole interactions in determining electronic and optical properties of graphene and two-dimensional systems.

The pyramidal II edge-dislocation in Mg causes a transformation into the basal-dissociated dislocation, in which two partial dislocations aligned along the 〈a〉 direction on a basal plane are connected by a type basal stacking fault. This paper investigates the mobility of basal-dissociated dislocations, which are considered as sessile, through molecular dynamics simulations. We demonstrate that the dislocation migrates smoothly along the direction even at very low temperatures. We also clarify the unique migration mechanism: two terminating partial dislocations exchange a Shockley’s partial dislocation at every migration. By revealing the glissile nature of the basal-dissociated dislocation, we provide new insights into the plasticity mechanisms of Mg. Further decompositions with basal-dissociated 〈c〉 dislocations occur when the strain is applied perpendicularly to the slip plane. Under higher shear stress, the dissociated 〈c〉 dislocations cannot easily migrate and instead decompose into heterogeneous structures. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Pneumonia is one of the top causes of death in Romania and early detection of this disease improves the recovery chances and shortens the length of hospitalization. In this work, we develop a solution for automatic pneumonia detection based on convolutional neural networks. Four network models are investigated. They are trained on 4.163 images from a public dataset and tested on 530 images. The best results are obtained by one of the proposed models conducting to a sensitivity of 98.72%, an accuracy of 89.81%, and ROC 93.46%. Thus, this research proposes a lightweight screening tool that can help triaging the patients with pneumonia.

This paper proposes a novel approach for the design of stabilizing sliding manifolds for linear systems affected by model uncertainties and external disturbances. In classical sliding mode control approaches, rejecting model uncertainties and external disturbances often relies on designing a dis-continuous control law with a suitable gain. Specifically, the greater the uncertainty, the larger the control gain. However, this approach might be detrimental to the plant. Instead, the proposed technique deals with this problem by focusing on the design of a suitable sliding manifold, where stability is guaranteed despite model uncertainties. This approach exhibits several benefits such as not needing any further identification process and designing a smaller control gain.
