In recent years, visible light communication is attracting growing interest for wireless communications since it is low-cost and easily maintained by using high-speed switchable LEDs. We have developed a prototype to demonstrate wireless visible light communications using RGB LEDs as both transmitter and light source. The RGB LEDs enable parallel signal communications, and a PSoC microcontroller is used to control them, thus significantly reducing the need for extra circuits and allowing rapid modification of communication software. A prototype system was developed and its validity was confirmed.

Related to the thermal contact resistance, lots of studies have been done on the thermal constriction resistance, which is a measure of the additional temperature drop at the contact interface [1]. And almost all of those studies have been conducted based on the two-dimensional cylindrical coordinates system. In the same way, the additional thermal resistance associated with the geometrical constriction is often encountered in the electronic components like relay circuits, the printed circuit boards, and so on. A multi-channel template extraction method is proposed for automatic EEG spike detection. The template is extracted automatically without any prior knowledge. The template extraction algorithm consists of three steps. Firstly, all possible spike events are detected. Secondly, the focus channels are identified for each event. Thirdly, the multi-channel template is extracted for each focus channel. The algorithm produces template adapted to not only individual patient, but also individual focus. The method was evaluated using the recordings from two epilepsy patients. The results suggested that template method should be of multi-channel for spike detection.

Navigation is an important topic in robotics, and various approaches have been proposed thus far. Conventional methods are of two types: those that create and utilize a model of the environment, and those that employ the environment itself instead of a model. For autonomous robots that have learning ability, the difference between these approaches has a significant impact because the learning target differs fundamentally. In the former case, the learning target is to create a model of the environment. Hence, robots learn the positions of obstacles, walls, and so on. In the latter case, the learning target is to explore how the various properties of the environment can be used for navigation. In this paper, we discuss the difference between these two types of learning-based navigation. We employ reinforcement learning as a learning algorithm and conduct simulations and experiments. Consequently, we confirm that the latter mode exhibits a better performance, and in particular, we demonstrate the real-time learning and applicability of the obtained policy for different environments.

It is reported that patients who have undergone dental surgery of implanting prosthetic teeth often suffer from pronunciation disorders. In reference to the past studies which report a correspondence of the peak in a frequency spectrum between the fricative sound and the vibration of anterior teeth, it was hypothesized that the postoperative pronunciation disorders were attributable to a change in the vibration mode of anteriorlyimplanted prosthetic teeth that have different elastic natures from natural teeth. The present study was designed to investigate effects of elastic properties of anteriorly-positioned prosthetic teeth on characteristics of its vibration and the emitted-sound. The flow channel was fabricated such that it morphologically simplified an oral cavity when sibilant/s/, one of the fricatives, is pronounced. An obstacle wall that is a model of anteriorly-positioned prosthetic teeth was made of four materials having different elasticity. The results demonstrated that the obstacle wall of different elasticity resulted in different modes of the vibration. However, the frequency spectrum of the emitted sound appeared to be almost the same irrespective of the elastic property of the teeth. Those results indicated less contributions of the teeth vibration to acoustic nature of the emitted sound, thereby suggesting that the postoperative pronunciation disorders is not due to a change in the vibration mode of prosthetic teeth at the anterior position.

In this study, a new type of trigonometric neural network is presented by adding frequency and phase to trigonometric activation functions. The proposed trigonometric neural network has more flexibility in comparison with conventional trigonometric neural networks and even other types of neural networks. Due to the low convergence rate and high posibility of trapping in a local minimum of backpropagation algorithm, Extended Kalman Filter algorithm is used to train the neural network's parameters which they appear in a nonlinear form. The Simulation of the suggested neural network based on the prediction of Mackey-Glass time series and identification of a nonlinear dynamic ystem reveals the efficiency of the proposed network. To show the efficiency of this method, the results are compared with the results of the others.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is effective for intractable diseases of the nervous system. As the effects of rTMS last only several hours, rTMS therapies need to be continued daily. Under present circumstances, it is difficult to use rTMS in patients' home, because only experienced physicians in limited hospitals can use the expensive and complicated rTMS system. Therefore, we developed a magnetic navigation system for home use of rTMS. The proposed system uses inexpensive and small magnetic sensors;hence it is suitable for home use. By using the proposed method, even people who have no medical knowledge and technique can easily navigate the coil to the optimal position preliminarily specified by expert physicians. Our system needs to collect some dataset which consists of magnetic field and the corresponding position of the coil at the patients' initial visit. Since it is bothersome to collect a large number of dataset, we reduced the dataset by approximation using multi-regression analysis.

The potential steady-state operation of a fusion tokamak, with good confinement and a high fusion gain, is related to setting up a suitable current density profile in the device. Experiments at the DIII-D tokamak focus on creating the desired current profile during the plasma current ramp-up and early flat-top phases of the discharge with the aim of maintaining this target profile throughout the subsequent phases of the discharge. The time evolution of the current density profile in a tokamak is related to the time evolution of the poloidal magnetic flux profile, which is modeled in normalized cylindrical coordinates by a partial differential equation referred to as the magnetic diffusion equation. Extremum seeking and nonlinear programming techniques have been employed to find optimal open-loop (feedforward) solutions to the finite time control problem during the ramp-up and early flat-top phases. In order to reject the effects of external disturbances to the system, we propose an optimal H ∞ feedback control input that is added to the optimal feedforward control input to regulate the poloidal flux profile around the desired reference trajectories of the system. The combined feedforward + feedback, model-based controller is then tested through simulation.
