In the field of scientific computing, Basic, C, and Fortran are widely used all over the world. Lots of beginners and students, however, suffer problems in making simulation programs due to inexperienced and complicated computer programming rules. Under such circumstances, some practical examples solved by using the spreadsheet software like Excel have been reported recently [1-3], where just by using equations written in each cell, calculations are performed without making any program. In the Excel analysis, writing and debugging are visually conducted by simply making use of worksheet analysis, and iterative calculations are carried out automatically until the prescribed convergence criterion is satisfied. Concerning calculated results, numerical values shown in the computational domain are immediately visualized using the chart wizard. Therefore, by using the spreadsheet software like Excel, even the students and younger researchers who have just started to study numerical analysis can perform calculations easily and quickly without studying any special knowledge about the computer language, and in addition without writing lengthy computer programs. In this study, for the purpose of introducing the abovementioned useful method to thermal analysis of electrical apparatus, electronic equipment and so on, the calculation process by thermal network method has been shown by using the concrete example of a compact fluorescent lamp.

The problem of constrained infinite-horizon model-predictive control for fuzzy-discrete systems is considered in this paper. New sufficient conditions are proposed in terms of linear-matrix inequalities. Based on the optimal solutions of these sufficient conditions at each sampling instant, we design both parallel-distributed compensation and nonparallel-distributed compensation state-feedback controllers, which can guarantee that the resulting closed-loop fuzzy-discrete system is asymptotically stable. In addition, the fuzzy-feedback controllers meet the specifications for the fuzzy-discrete systems with both input and output constraints. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

Accidents involving electric wheelchairs in Japan have increased as the nation's population ages. About half of all accidents are caused when the chair tips over sideways or backwards on a sidewalk. The authors have developed two kinds of safe technology intending to prevent such accidents. The first prevents the wheelchair from falling sideways on a sidewalk when the wheelchair is moving across the slope of a sidewalk. On a slope, the wheelchair easily swerves from the desired direction and goes down the slope because of gravity. The second measure prevents a large backward tipping angle when the wheelchair is moving up over grade height differences and slopes. The authors have configured a wheelchair which has a posture sensor, magnetic brake bar and small control board. Results of indoor experiments on not only simulated slopes and grade height differences but also in real outdoor environments have confirmed the effectiveness of the authors' support technology.

Non-opioid intravenous anesthetic agents, such as propofol, have been used in anesthesia since 1970's for conscious sedation. In this paper, the study aims to regulate the syringe pump of propofol infusion during induction. The syringe pump is regulated by using a linear positive controller. The controller is designed so as to satisfy positivity in state. The control output is positive and bounded. Effect site concentration is used as a feedback to the controller. Simulation results show that the controller regulates propofol very well and the BIS responses of the patient are observed so that there is no overshoot or oscillation.

This paper proposes a new 4-Degree-of-Freedom (DOF) master-slave system for 3 dimensional needle steering. Both master and slave devices are commonly composed of a 3 DOF spherical type parallel mechanism and a 1 DOF needle insertion mechanism. This system provides users with 3 dimensional needle steering and force reflection capabilities. The real time forward solution of the master device is addressed. The design of the master-slave system is described in detail. Finally, the effectiveness of this system for 3 dimensional needle steering task is verified through experimental work.
