When organizations face unforeseen emergency situations its members often resort to unstructured crisis management activities in order to overcome the problems. Researchers have noted that a common activity in these scenarios is the construction of a shared awareness of the situation in order to collaboratively identify the actions required to be carried on and the most suitable people to do them. In this paper we present a collaborative application based on Tablet-PCs to assist these unstructured activities aiming to improve their consistency and effectiveness. Inspired on the Reasons Swiss-Cheese model for accidents, the proposed approach relies on the development of a shared situation awareness, constructed from a set of collaboratively constructed situation matrixes which expose involved users contributions to the overall solution strategy. Three application scenarios are used as example.

A considerable amount of research has been done on the use of logarithmic quantizers for networked feedback control systems. However, most results are developed for the case of a single quantizer (either measurement or control signal quantization). In this paper, we investigate the case of simultaneous input and output quantization for SISO linear output feedback systems. Firstly, we show that the problem of quadratic stabilization via quantized feedback can be addressed with no conservativeness by means of the sector bound approach. Secondly, we provide a bound on the maximal admissible sector bound via a scaled H ¿ optimization problem.

It is well known that speech production and perception process is inherently bimodal consisting of audio and visual components. Recently there has been increased interest in using the visual modality in combination with the acoustic modality for improved speech processing. This field of study has gained the title of audio-visual speech processing. Lip movement recognition, also known as lip reading, is a communication skill which involves the interpretation of lip movements in order to estimate some important parameters of the lips that include, but not limited to, size, shape and orientation. In this paper, we represent a hybrid framework for lip reading which is based on both audio and visual speech parameters extracted from a video stream of isolated spoken words. The proposed algorithm is self-tuned in the sense that it starts with an estimations of speech parameters based on visual lip features and then the coefficients of the algorithm are fine-tuned based on the extracted audio parameters. In the audio speech processing part, extracted audio features are used to generate a vector containing information of the speech phonemes. These information are used later to enhance the recognition and matching process. For lip feature extraction, we use a modified version of the method used by F. Huang and T. Chen for tracking of multiple faces. This method is based on statistical color modeling and the deformable template. The experiments based on the proposed framework showed interesting results in recognition of isolated words.

There is an important evidence of differences in the EEG frequency spectrum of control subjects as compared to epileptic subjects. In particular, the study of children presents difficulties due to the early stages of brain development and the various forms of epilepsy indications. In this study, we consider children that developed epileptic crises in the past but without any other clinical, psychological, or visible neurophysiological findings. The aim of the paper is to develop reliable techniques for testing if such controlled epilepsy induces related spectral differences in the EEG. Spectral features extracted by using nonparametric, signal representation techniques (Fourier and wavelet transform) and a parametric, signal modeling technique (ARMA) are compared and their effect on the classification of the two groups is analyzed. The subjects performed two different tasks: a control (rest) task and a relatively difficult math task. The results show that spectral features extracted by modeling the EEG signals recorded from individual channels by an ARMA model give a higher discrimination between the two subject groups for the control task, where classification scores of up to 100% were obtained with a linear discriminant classifier.

This paper introduced an expert knowledge-based automatic sleep stage determination system working on statistical signal processing. The main methods included two processes. One was expert knowledge base construction, which was developed in terms of probability density functions (pdfs) of parameters for each sleep stage. Here, the visual inspection by a clinician was utilized rather than stage scoring criteria for expert knowledge base construction. Another was multi-valued decision making of sleep stages, where stages were determined automatically according to the conditional probabilities. Totally, four subjects were participated, They are patients from Toranomon hospital, Japan. The automatic sleep stage determination results showed close agreements with the visual inspection in stage awake, light sleep stages and deep sleep stages. The constructed expert knowledge base reflected the distributions of characteristic parameters corresponding to each stage. The proposed method may have strong performance to be an assistant tool for clinicians enabling further inspection of sleep disorder cases.

Recently we develop two kinds of approaches, that is, the super-exponential method (SEM) and the eigenvector method (EVM), of which both can achieve the blind deconvolution for MIMO-IIR systems. It is shown that these methods are closely related each other. Based on this fact, we propose a new SEM incorporated with the EVM. Simulation results will be presented for showing the validity of the proposed method.

Exoskeleton is an external structural mechanism with joints and links corresponding to those of the human body. It transmits torques from actuators through rigid exoskeletal links to the human joints when it is worn. We have been developing exoskeleton robots for assisting the motion of physically weak individuals such as elderly or slightly disabled in daily life. In this paper we propose a three degree of freedom (3DOF) exoskeleton robot for the forearm pronation/supination motion, wrist flexion/ extension motion and ulnar/radial deviation. The paper describes wrist anatomy toward the development of the robot, the hardware design of the exoskeleton (mechanical structure and mechanism, sensors and actuators, power transmission and safety aspects) and potential control methods. Force control using force/torque sensors located at wrist and forearm and electromyographic (EMG) signals based control using skin surface EMG signals of forearm and wrist muscles are the potential control methods for the robot. Experiments have been performed to evaluate the proposed exoskeleton. ©2007 IEEE.

In general, it is difficult to compare biological reactions to some kind of stimulation among subjects on the basis of a single physiological parameter such as heart rate variability because there is a large individual variability in its values. A solution to this problem is to utilize the correlation between physiological parameters. In previous works, the maximum cross-correlation coefficient between heart rate and blood pressure variabilities changed when subjects were strongly affected by visual stimulation. In the present work, this index was compared with a traditional one associated with the arterial baroreflex gain to investigate the mechanism of the change in the index. Resting heart rate and continuous blood pressure of twenty-eight healthy adults were measured for five minutes and analyzed. The results showed that these two indices changed similarly to each other while there was little correlation in the mean value between them. Furthermore, the lag time from blood pressure variability to heart rate variability was inversely correlated with the traditional index.

Refractive index has been determined from reflectance measurements at 77-300 K for Tl x Ga 1– x As samples with x ≤ 0.077 prepared by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy. A very high refractive index of around 4.5 at room temperature in the transparent wavelength region has been revealed for Tl x Ga 1– x As with x = 0.077. The temperature coefficient of the refractive index was found to increase with Tl content. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Excess As in low-temperature grown InAs

Using secondary ion mass spectrometry, we have investigated the excess As concentration in InAs layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy at 150-300 °C. A step-like increase of the As/In ratio from the substrate to the epi layer was observed for the samples grown at lower temperatures than 250 °C. The excess As concentration averaged over the grown layer thickness reached 1.2×10 20 cm –3 for the layer grown at 200 °C. Through the combination with the results of X-ray diffraction, a proportional relation of Δ a ⊥ / a = 2×10 –24 δ [As] is deduced between the perpendicular lattice mismatch Δ a ⊥ / a and the atomic density δ [As] of excess As in the unit of cm –3 . Hall effect measurements at 77 K revealed that the electron concentration is much lower than the excess As concentration. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
