We discuss two specific issues that affected the workflows in our career as automatic control teachers and that are related to how teachers may establish teaching-oriented collaborations with colleagues from the same or different institutions. The first issue we identify is the systematic difficulty that one encounters when wanting to exchange instructional material with colleagues, while the second is the complexity of establishing students exchange programs across different institutions and nations. We discuss the nature and structure of the two problems, discuss why and how they are connected, and draw practical examples of how these problems may affect workflows. We then present a strategy that aims at solving these issues based on the introduction of an opportune indexing of instructional material in terms of contents and complexity of such contents, and how this information may be graphically displayed so to ease human and machine interpretability. We further discuss how this approach was used on a smaller scale to ease collaborations among close colleagues, and how it may be extended and adopted on a larger scale.

Vectored non-covalent interactions—mainly hydrogen bonding and aromatic interactions—extensively contribute to(bio)-organic self-assembling processes and significantly impact the physicochemical properties of the associated ***,vectored non-covalent interaction-driven assembly occursmainly along one-dimensional(1D)or three-dimensional(3D)directions,and a two-dimensional(2D)orientation,especially that of multilayered,graphene-like assembly,has been reported *** this present research,by introducing amino,hydroxyl,and phenyl moieties to the triazine skeleton,supramolecular layered assembly is achieved by vectored non-covalent *** planar hydrogen bonding network results in high stability,with a thermal sustainability of up to about 330°C and a Young’s modulus of up to about 40 *** introducing wrinkles by biased hydrogen bonding or aromatic interactions to disturb the planar organization,the stability ***,the intertwined aromatic interactions prompt a red edge excitation shift effect inside the assemblies,inducing broad-spectrum fluorescence covering nearly the entire visible light region(400–650 nm).We show that bionic,superhydrophobic,pillar-like arrays with contact angles of up to about 170°can be engineered by aromatic interactions using a physical vapor deposition approach,which cannot be realized through hydrogen *** findings show the feasibility of 2D assembly with engineerable properties by modulating vectored non-covalent interactions.

As a rehabilitation aid,the lower extremity rehabilitation robot usually works together with the patient during the rehabilitation training process,and achieves therapeutic effects by assisting the patient to complete movements within a certain trajectory for *** realize the active training of the rehabilitation robot,the rehabilitation robot needs to be able to recognize the patient's movement intention and cooperate with *** signals contain rich neuromuscular movement information and are often used to extract patients' movement *** this paper,using the principle of human lower extremity force generation,we designed an experiment for lower extremity action recognition of sEMG *** extracting the composition of feature vectors through time-domain feature values,we designed an SVM classifier to achieve the classification of five common lower extremity actions and obtained an average accuracy rate of 90.66% through the experiment,which verified the effectiveness of the experimental design.

The Youla-Kucera parametrization, a method to parametrize all stabilizing controllers, is developed for linear and nonlinear systems based on their stable image and kernel representations. As a stepping stone of parametrizing nonlinear controllers for contraction, we investigate in this paper stable image and kernel representations for variational systems. In particular, we construct stable inner image (resp. co-inner kernel) representations having stable left (resp. right) inverses based on differential Riccati equations for contraction analysis.

The advent of single-cell transcriptomics has revolutionized our ability to analyze cellular heterogeneity and dynamics at a fine resolution, yet covering the vast array of potential perturbations remains challenging due to biological variability. To address this, we propose scCADE, a novel computational approach utilizing contrastive learning and an attention mechanism to decouple gene expression signatures and predict cellular responses to perturbations. scCADE excels in predicting responses in cells to perturbations observed in other cells but not yet seen in the target cells. Through rigorous ablation studies and validation across three datasets involving drug and gene editing perturbations, scCADE consistently outperformed existing methods, underscoring its efficacy and potential to advance genomics and personalized medicine by accurately forecasting responses to novel perturbations.

The world is facing an increase in the incidence of thyroid diseases, including in Jordan as well, especially hypothyroidism. This condition can be diagnosed through blood samples to know the percentage of hormones (TSH, T3, and T4) and take the appropriate decision after that. The major goal of this study is to make diagnosis easier and reduce the risk of misdiagnosis, which happens all too often. Methods: The use of machine learning in the prediction of disease is a crucial step in the process of data analysis. This paper presents an analysis and classification model that takes into account the various factors involved in the prediction of disease. We applied a number of machine learning algorithms like support vector machine (SVM), Nave Bayes, decision trees, and ensemble to get the best prediction. The decision tree algorithm showed the highest accuracy and lowest cost with a percentage of 97.6 percent and 90, respectively. The results appeared in the form of three classes (compensated hypothyroidism, primary hypothyroidism, and negative). Conclusion: The best results were obtained at the milestone point in computer-aided diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Future work is considered to increase the number of cases that can be detected and diagnosed using machine learning. © 2022 IEEE.

The Impact of SBOM Generators on Vulnerability Assessment in Python: A Comparison and a Novel Approach

The Software Supply Chain (SSC) security is a critical concern for both users and developers. Recent incidents, like the SolarWinds Orion compromise, proved the widespread impact resulting from the distribution of compromised software. The reliance on open-source components, which constitute a significant portion of modern software, further exacerbates this risk. To enhance SSC security, the Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) has been promoted as a tool to increase transparency and verifiability in software composition. However, despite its promise, SBOMs are not without limitations. Current SBOM generation tools often suffer from inaccuracies in identifying components and dependencies, leading to the creation of erroneous or incomplete representations of the SSC. Despite existing studies exposing these limitations, their impact on the vulnerability detection capabilities of security tools is still unknown. In this paper, we perform the first security analysis on the vulnerability detection capabilities of tools receiving SBOMs as input. We comprehensively evaluate SBOM generation tools by providing their outputs to vulnerability identification software. Based on our results, we identify the root causes of these tools' ineffectiveness and propose PIP-sbom, a novel pip-inspired solution that addresses their shortcomings. PIP-sbom provides improved accuracy in component identification and dependency resolution. Compared to best-performing state-of-the-art tools, PIP-sbom increases the average precision and recall by 60%, and reduces by ten times the number of false positives. © 2024, CC BY-SA.

Recently, the field of life sciences has witnessed significant advancements, leading to the exploration of various cell characteristics to evaluate cellular behavior. Among these characteristics, cell stiffness has garnered considerable attention. It is widely acknowledged that cell stiffness undergoes changes based on the cell’s physiological state, rendering stiffness measurement a critical parameter in cell evaluation. However, the extensive research into cell stiffness has been hindered by the challenges associated with manipulating micron-scale cells and measuring nano-scale forces. Previous studies have proposed a cell stiffness measurement system utilizing a two-fingered microhand equipped with a micro force sensor. Nonetheless, this approach required manual manipulation of the target object, resulting in potential errors in stiffness measurement. Additionally, manual manipulation restricted the workspace, limiting its applicability. To address these limitations, this paper introduces an automated stiffness measurement technique that integrates force data and image data. Furthermore, a multi-scale simultaneous observation system is presented, combining optical systems from two microscopes with different magnification levels.

Distributionally robust stability of payoff allocations in stochastic coalitional games

We consider multi-agent coalitional games with uncertainty in the coalitional values. We provide a novel methodology to study the stability of the grand coalition in the case where each coalition constructs ambiguity sets for the (possibly) unknown probability distribution of the uncertainty. As a less conservative solution concept compared to worst-case approaches for coalitional stability, we consider a stochastic version of the so-called core set, i.e., the expected value core. Unfortunately, without exact knowledge of the probability distribution, the evaluation of the expected value core is an extremely challenging task. Hence, we propose the concept of distributionaly robust (DR) core. Leveraging tools from data-driven DR optimization under the Wasserstein distance, we provide finite-sample guarantees that any allocation which lies in the DR core is also stable with respect to the true probability distribution. Furthermore, we show that as the number of samples grows unbounded, the DR core converges almost surely to the true expected value core. We dedicate the last section to the computational tractability of finding an allocation in the DR core. © 2023, CC BY.

In this paper, a comprehensive investigation of the performance evaluation and validation of a single-phase asynchronous motor pump system coupled with a photovoltaic (PV) power source is presented. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practicality and effectiveness of this configuration for pumping applications. The RTLAB platform, which enables real-time simulation and emulation of dynamic systems, includes important components, such as the use of a single-phase asynchronous motor as the pump's power source, the incorporation of a PV system to supply renewable energy, and the use of RTLAB for real-time validation. Through rigorous simulation and experimentation, the motor response performance, such as speed, torque, and current response, was analyzed under varying solar irradiance and load conditions. In addition, the PV power and DC bus voltage were supervised after motor driving. This research fills the knowledge gap between the theoretical analysis and real-world applications of single-phase asynchronous motor pump systems combined with PV sources. This approach, which validates the results using RTLAB, provides a validation method to evaluate the performance and guide design choices for effective and environmentally friendly pumping solutions.
