Automated Audio Captioning is a multimodal task that aims to convert audio content into natural language. The assessment of audio captioning systems is typically based on quantitative metrics applied to text data. Previous studies have employed metrics derived from machine translation and image captioning to evaluate the quality of generated audio captions. Drawing inspiration from auditory cognitive neuroscience research, we introduce a novel metric approach – Audio Captioning Evaluation on Semantics of Sound (ACES). ACES takes into account how human listeners parse semantic information from sounds, providing a novel and comprehensive evaluation perspective for automated audio captioning systems. ACES combines semantic similarities and semantic entity labeling. The paper describes the energy consumption from the battery based on the current measurements for various cases, i.e., speed (PWL adjustment) and loads. The main purpose of the research is to have additional and reliable information about power consumption and battery life estimation for autonomous guided vehicles (AGV). The authors propose a two-step algorithm. In the first step, a linear classifier was proposed. Then, the KNN classifier was tested; however, it did not give satisfactory results, so it was finally decided to use the random forest to estimate the load and PWL. The time domain current measurement is evaluated, and the beforementioned algorithms process the selected statistical measures. It has been proven that a two-step algorithm allows for achieving high accuracy. Based on the current observation, the paper is a good starting point for further investigation of the AGV because it is usually implemented in the AGV – so it does not require additional hardware. Moreover, it can lead to better energy management and increase battery lifetime.

The benefits of using biopolymers in the food industry have motivated the scientists to develop products with better characteristics than the regular ones. Biocompatibility with the human body, edibility and ease of use have paved the way for biopolymers such as agar, sodium alginate, carrageenan, chitosan, etc. for using it in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. In addition to their well-known characteristics, biopolymers have the ability to incorporate various natural substances, representing an almost perfect matrix for them. Studies have shown the effectiveness of incorporating natural compounds with antioxidant, antimicrobial and controlled release. Thus, natural powders or essential oils have been developed. The purpose of this study was to highlight the importance of using good quality essential oils, allowed for consumption, extracted by natural methods, with real benefits for the health. The films were obtained from a mixture of agar, sodium alginate, glycerol and water, after a composition developed in the laboratory and optimized using specific software. Then, 10, respectively 20% essential oils such as lemon, cloves, orange, cinnamon, ginger and grapefruit were added in the cooled film-forming solution. The essential oils were purchased from specialized companies, with quality certificates and considered optimal for consumption, according to the manufacturer. After development, the films with essential oil added presented improved sensory attributes: homogeneity, uniformity, regular edges, better appearance, pleasant color, specific smell and taste, which did not lose its intensity after storage, high gloss and flexibility. The solubility in water has been improved with the addition of essential oil, which is normal if we take into account their hydrophobic nature. Phocid seals can detect fish from distances up to 180 meters solely using undulating whiskers. The unique undulating surfaces of these whiskers have been found to minimize vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs). In our previous work, we measured the ratios of undulation wavelength (λ) to mean diameter $\left(D_{m}\right),\left(\lambda / D_{m}\right)$ in both harbor and grey seals, yielding values of approximately 4.36 and 4.63, respectively. In this study, we delve into the significance of the $\lambda / D_{m}$ ratio to the vibration responses of seal whiskers in a fluid flow. We conducted comprehensive fluid-structure interaction studies using COMSOL Multiphysics®, wherein we studied vibration responses of harbor and grey seal whisker structures with diverse $\lambda / D_{m}$ values in the oncoming flow. Our results indicate that seal whiskers exhibited a trough in their VIV responses and a peak in wake-induced vibration (WIV) responses at $\lambda / D_{m}$ values around 4 to 5. Our findings could imply that the evolutionary optimization of the $\lambda / D_{m}$ value enables seal whiskers with resistance to VIV and sensitivity to WIV.

Developing non-noble-metal oxygen evolution reaction(OER) electrocatalysts with high performance is critical to electrocatalytic water splitting. In this work, we fabricated Co Fe-layered double hydroxide(LDH) nanowire arrays on graphite felt(Co Fe-LDH/GF) via a hydrothermal method. The Co Fe-LDH/GF, as a robust integrated 3 D OER anode, exhibits excellent catalytic activity with the need of low overpotential of 252 and 285 mV to drive current densities of 10 and 100 mA/cm^(2) in 1.0 mol/L KOH, respectively. In addition, it also maintains electrochemical durability for at least 24 h. This work would open up avenues for the development of GF like attractive catalyst supports for oxygen evolution applications.

This project developed a novel attention algorithm for multi-stack bidirectional encoder-decoder RNN (including GRU and LSTM) sequence-to-sequence models, particularly for language translation tasks. The attention mechanism utilizes matrix rearranging and multiplication to compute the significance of the vectors in the encoder output to the vectors in the current decoder hidden states when predicting each word. Our approach achieved 98% of the performance of fine-tuned pretrained T5-small, with 30% to 50% fewer parameters depending on vocabulary size, making our model an ideal choice in cases of single-processor training, low processor resource, limited memory, small dataset, or tasks not supported by pretrained transformers.

This paper proposes a novel transformerless, single-phase, three-level, buck-boost inverter. The proposed inverter can suppress the leakage current drawn from the input power source and provide a long-lasting solution for applications with a wide range and unregulated input voltage. Unlike similar topologies, in the proposed inverter there is no need to have a mid-point of DC sources or DC bus capacitors at the input side of the inverter. A single-phase, three-level, buck-boost inverter for realizing the power stage with 110-Vrms output AC voltage and a range of 100V-200V input DC voltage is investigated in this study. The proposed topology has been proven through theory, computer simulations, and experimental studies with SiC MOSFETs-based prototype of a 300-VA power supply. Theory, computer simulation, and experimental results are all correlated.

In this paper, we present a novel framework to synthesize robust strategies for discrete-time nonlinear systems with random disturbances that are unknown, against temporal logic specifications. The proposed framework is data-driven and abstraction-based: leveraging observations of the system, our approach learns a high-confidence abstraction of the system in the form of an uncertain Markov decision process (UMDP). The uncertainty in the resulting UMDP is used to formally account for both the error in abstracting the system and for the uncertainty coming from the data. Critically, we show that for any given state-action pair in the resulting UMDP, the uncertainty in the transition probabilities can be represented as a convex polytope obtained by a two-layer state discretization and concentration inequalities. This allows us to obtain tighter uncertainty estimates compared to existing approaches, and guarantees efficiency, as we tailor a synthesis algorithm exploiting the structure of this UMDP. We empirically validate our approach on several case studies, showing substantially improved performance compared to the state-of-the-art. © 2024, CC BY.
