CoCrMoW alloys with different nitrogen (N) additions (0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 wt.%) were prepared via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The effects of N content on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The results indicate that the LPBFed CoCrMoW alloy with 0.1 wt.% N addition (0.1N alloy) shows the best combination of mechanical properties with a yield strength of ~ 983 MPa and an elongation of ~ 19%. Both the LPBF process and the N addition impose great effects on suppressing the g to e martensitic transformation, resulting in a decrease in the width and amount of e laths/stacking faults. Besides, the N addition promotes the segregation of elements Mo, W, and Si along the cellular sub-grain boundaries (CBs), forming fine and discontinuous precipitates rich in Mo, W and Si along the CBs in the 0.1N alloy, but dense and continuous (Mo,W)5Si3 precipitates along the CBs in the 0.2N alloy. The (Mo,W)5Si3 precipitates with a tetragonal structure were observed and characterized for the first time in the Co-Cr based alloys. The negative mixing enthalpy between the non-metallic elements N, Si and the metallic elements Mo, W, Cr, and the rapid solidification induced segregation of high melting point elements such as Mo and W along CBs during LPBF process, synergistically contribute to the chemical heterogeneity in the alloys. The pure FCC matrix, the slightly increased segregation of Mo, W, Si elements and fine precipitates along the CBs contribute to the good combination of strength and elongation of the 0.1N alloy. However, though pure FCC phase was present in the 0.2N alloy, the dense and continuous (Mo,W)5Si3 precipitates along CBs acted as nucleation sites for cracks, deteriorating the elongation of the alloy. Overall, it is possible to tune the mechanical properties of the LPBFed CoCrMoW alloy by adjusting the local chemical heterogeneity. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings are commonly used on titanium alloy substrates for orthopedic and dental implants because of their excellent osteoconductivity and biocompatibility. The disparity in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the coating and substrate can result in the formation of cracks in the HA coatings during the coating process. This study examined the effect of titania (TiO2) nanoparticle additions in HA coatings to enhance their properties and prevent cracking. Using electrophoretic deposition (EPD), HA and HA-TiO2 composite coatings were applied to laser powder bed fused Ti6Al4V substrates. Optimal EPD conditions of 45 volts and 120 s were identified to produce consistent, crack-free coatings. Increasing the TiO2 nanoparticle concentration (≥50 wt.%) decreased the coatings' CTE, mitigating cooling-induced cracking. The microstructural analysis confirmed the uniform distribution of HA and TiO2 in the coatings. X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy data revealed that the HA structure remained intact even with the addition of TiO2. Higher TiO2 reduced the average surface roughness, with the HA-40%TiO2 coating exhibiting the lowest roughness (approximately 50 nm). Electrochemical tests corroborated the surface roughness findings. Incorporating TiO2 into the HA coatings decreased the thermal expansion coefficient, reducing tensile stresses. © 2024, The Authors. Motivated by the inadequacy of conventional control methods for power networks with a large share of renewable generation, in this paper we study the (stochastic) passivity property of wind turbines based on the Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). Differently from the majority of the results in the literature, where renewable generation is ignored or assumed to be constant, we model wind power generation as a stochastic process, where wind speed is described by a class of stochastic differential equations. Then, we design a distributed control scheme that achieves load frequency control and economic dispatch, ensuring the stochastic stability of the controlled network. © 2021 EUCA.

Oxides of silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) have been used as soil amendments to reduce As mobility and uptake in paddy soil systems. However, these amendments are hypothesized to be affected differently depending on the soil pH and their effect on As speciation in rice paddy systems is not fully understood. Herein, we used a microcosm experiment to investigate the effects of natural Si-rich fly ash and synthetic Mn and Zn oxides on the temporal development of porewater chemistry, including aqueous As speciation (As(III), As(V), MMA, DMA, and DMMTA) and solid-phase As solubility, in a naturally calcareous soil with or without soil acidification (with sulfuric acid) during 28 days of flooding and subsequent 14 days of drainage. We found that soil acidification to pH 4.5 considerably increased the solubility of Si, Fe, Mn, and Zn compared to the non-acidified soil. Additions of Mn and Zn oxides decreased the concentrations of dissolved arsenite and arsenate in the non-acidified soil whereas additions of Zn oxide and combined Si–Zn oxides increased them in the acidified soil. The Si-rich fly ash did not increase dissolved Si and As in the acidified and non-acidified soils. Dimethylated monothioarsenate (DMMTA) was mainly observed in the acidified soil during the later stage of soil flooding. The initial 28 days of soil flooding decreased the levels of soluble and exchangeable As and increased As associated with Mn oxides, whereas the subsequent 14 days of soil drainage reversed the trend. This study highlighted that soil acidification considerably controlled the solubilization of Ca and Fe, thus influencing the soil pH-Eh buffering capacity, the solubility of Si, Mn, and Zn oxides, and the mobility of different As species in carbonate-rich and acidic soils under redox fluctuations. © 2024 The Authors

The human-robot interaction torque can affect the control performance of hip exoskeleton robots while it is difficult to install sensors to measure the human-robot interaction *** order to address this issue and improve the flexibility,an admittance control method based on an enhanced unknown system dynamics estimator(EUSDE) is proposed for the hip exoskeleton robot in this *** specifically,the EUSDE based on two low-pass filters and simple algebra operation is first developed in order to estimate the unknown human-machine interaction torque,where only two filter coefficients need to be adjusted and the robustness against noise is ***,the proposed EUSDE can be easily embedded into an admittance controller such that the flexibility of the exoskeleton robot is ***,comparative simulation results are conducted to show the efficacy of the admittance controller with the proposed EUSDE for the hip exoskeleton robot.

Criticality in the Luria-Delbrück Model with an Arbitrary Mutation Rate

The Luria-Delbrück model is a classic model of population dynamics with random mutations, that has been used historically to prove that random mutations drive evolution. In typical scenarios, the relevant mutation rate is exceedingly small, and mutants are counted only at the final time point. Here, inspired by recent experiments on DNA repair, we study a mathematical model that is formally equivalent to the Luria-Delbrück setup, with the repair rate p playing the role of mutation rate, albeit taking on large values, of order unity per cell division. We find that although at large times the fraction of repaired cells approaches one, the variance of the number of repaired cells undergoes a phase transition: when p>1/2 the variance decreases with time, but, intriguingly, for p<1/2 even though the fraction of repaired cells approaches 1, the variance in the number of repaired cells increases with time. Analyzing DNA-repair experiments, we find that in order to explain the data the model should also take into account the probability of a successful repair process once it is initiated. Taken together, our work shows how the study of variability can lead to surprising phase transitions as well as provide biological insights into the process of DNA repair.

As a key component in the transmission system of high-speed trains, once a failure occurs, it will directly affect the safety of train operation. Therefore, it is of great significance to construct a degradation index that can comprehensively characterize the running state of bearings and establish a reliable remaining useful life model to ensure the safety of train operation. Aiming at the problems that the redundant features in the existing multi-feature fusion process affect the diagnosis performance and the spurious fluctuations phenomenon of the fusion features causes the inaccurate determination of the start fault time and leads to the low prediction accuracy of remaining useful life (RUL), A method based on adaptive feature fusion and autoregressive integrated moving average model is proposed for rolling bearings prediction. The research in this study demonstrates that by comparing and verifying with two sets of public data, the proposed method is effective in accurately identifying the features that are most sensitive to degradation trends, accurately determine the initial fault moment of bearings, achieve effective prediction of the RUL of bearings, and the related research results can provide reference basis for predictive maintenance of train bearings. © 2024, The Authors. Output consensus control for linear port-Hamiltonian systems

In this paper, we study output consensus of coupled linear port-Hamiltonian systems on graphs in the presence of constant disturbances, where couplings are allowed to be both static and dynamic. Utilizing port-Hamiltonian structures, we present dynamic controllers achieving output consensus where the consensus values are determined by the disturbances. Finally, the utility of the proposed controller is illustrated by applying it to current sharing of DC microgrids.

Universality in the tape-peeling trace

Spatiotemporal patterns, which are of interest in statistical physics and nonlinear dynamics, form on the tape-peeling trace. Recently, we have proposed a mathematical model to describe these pattern formation in the tape-peeling trace. In this paper, we further investigate the tape-peeling model from the perspective of its universality class. We confirm that our model belongs to the 1-dimensional directed percolation universality class. Furthermore, the experimental results from a previous study are re-analyzed, and it is suggested that the tape-peeling trace can also be classified within the 1-dimensional directed percolation universality class.
