Rainfall estimation plays a vital role in the fields of hydrology and meteorology. Accurate precipitation data are essential for a wide range of applications, including hydrometeorological modeling, flood forecasting, and microwave communication. Commonly used sources of rainfall data include rain gauges, rain radar, and satellite measurements such as the hydro-estimator from NOAA. Rain gauges are often considered the ground truth and are used to validate other sources due to their direct and precise measurement capabilities. This study aims to validate the accuracy of the hydro-estimator for precipitation estimation and simulation by conducting a comparative analysis of rain gauge and hydro-estimator product data. The methodology involves collecting and analyzing data from rain gauges and the hydro-estimator for the years 2012 and 2020 in a specific region of Malaysia. Statistical methods are employed to compare the two datasets. The findings of this study provide insights into the accuracy of the hydro-estimator when compared to rain gauges. By presenting a thorough comparison of rain gauge and hydro-estimator data, this research contributes to the fields of hydrology and meteorology. Additionally, it sheds light on the suitability of these data sources for microwave applications in Malaysia, as accurate hydrometeor fade simulation is crucial for signal attenuation and link reliability.

Early detection of infants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can lead to effective developmental support. In clinical practice, early screening of 18-month-old infants is implemented using a parent-completed questionnaire. However, research has suggested that signs of ASD may also appear in movement characteristics during the first few months of age. In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate infant movement from videos based on non-negative tensor factorization (NTF) and apply it to ASD risk assessment in the neonatal period. The proposed method applies NTF to pose data estimated from videos, and decomposes the infant's movements into multiple components while considering the linkage between body parts. In the experiment, we evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed method using 36 low-risk infants and 13 high-risk infants for ASD, with the aim of applying the method to ASD risk assessment. The results showed that the proposed method captured the tendency for infants to perform different movements depending on their risk level. Machine learning analysis revealed that the proposed method identified ASD risk with an accuracy exceeding 70%, which was comparable or superior to the existing video evaluation method based on heuristically designed indicators. © 2025 IEEE.

Saffron is one of the most valuable spices in the world, whose origin is attributed to Iran. Iran produces about 90% of the world's saffron annually, however, the harvesting of this product in Iran is mostly done manually. Manual harvest of saffron brings problems. Decreasing the quality of saffron and contamination of saffron with microorganisms are among the problems that arise during manual harvesting. For this purpose, a gripper is recommended for harvesting saffron flowers. One of the special features of the saffron plant is that several flowers may come out from each corm at different time intervals, for this reason, the proposed gripper uses the plucking method to harvest the flowers and separate flowers from the stem so that the next flowers can grow easily. Design, simulation, and control of the gripper have been conducted using conventional software such as SOLIDWORKS, ADAMS, and MATLAB.

Automated vehicle acceptance (AVA) has been measured mostly subjectively by questionnaires and interviews, with a main focus on drivers inside automated vehicles (AVs). To ensure that AVs are widely accepted by the public, ensuring the acceptance by both drivers and passengers is key. The in-vehicle experience of passengers will determine the extent to which AVs will be accepted by passengers. A comprehensive understanding of potential assessment methods to measure the passenger experience in AVs is needed to improve the in-vehicle experience of passengers and thereby the acceptance. The present work provides an overview of assessment methods that were used to measure a driver's behavior, and cognitive and emotional states during (automated) driving. The results of the review have shown that these assessment methods can be classified by type of data-collection method (e.g., questionnaires, interviews, direct input devices, sensors), object of their measurement (i.e., perception, behavior, state), time of measurement, and degree of objectivity of the data collected. A conceptual model synthesizes the results of the literature review, formulating relationships between the factors constituting the in-vehicle experience and AVA acceptance. It is theorized that the in-vehicle experience influences the intention to use, with intention to use serving as predictor of actual use. The model also formulates relationships between actual use and well-being. A combined approach of using both subjective and objective assessment methods is needed to provide more accurate estimates for AVA, and advance the uptake and use of AVs. © 2023, CC BY.

With increasing numbers of mobile robots arriving in real-world applications, more robots coexist in the same space, interact, and possibly collaborate. Methods to provide such systems with system size scalability are known, for example, from swarm robotics. Example strategies are self-organizing behavior, a strict decentralized approach, and limiting the robot-robot communication. Despite applying such strategies, any multi-robot system breaks above a certain critical system size (i.e., number of robots) as too many robots share a resource (e.g., space, communication channel). We provide additional evidence based on simulations, that at these critical system sizes, the system performance separates into two phases: nearly optimal and minimal performance. We speculate that in real-world applications that are configured for optimal system size, the supposedly high-performing system may actually live on borrowed time as it is on a transient to breakdown. We provide two modeling options (based on queueing theory and a population model) that may help to support this reasoning.

Hybrid supercapacitors have drawn much attention since they possess both high energy density and power density. Carbon felt (CF) is brought to the forefront because of its 3D porous structure, good conductivity and excellent flexibility, which is chosen as the flexible substrate in this work. FeCo2S4 nanoneedles are designed and uniformly deposited on CF via hydrothermal, annealing and sulfidation processes, forming the binder-free FeCo2S4@CF electrode. The as-fabricated electrode with unique features is beneficial to the exposure of more electroactive sites and the rapid transport of electrons/ions, showing a high specific capacitance of 847.8 mF cm−2 and outstanding rate performance. The hybrid supercapacitor assembled by FeCo2S4@CF electrode and activated carbon felt (ACF) presents a voltage window of 1.6 V, and exhibits the maximum specific capacitance of 309.7 mF cm−2, energy density of 110.1 μWh cm−2 and power density of 562.4 μW cm−2. In addition, the capacitance retention of the device is 98.5% after 10000 charge-discharge cycles and 87.2% after 3000 bending cycles respectively, revealing its great cycling stability and flexibility. Therefore, this work offers a promising battery-type electrode for high-performance hybrid supercapacitor. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The removal of microplastics and oil from oil-water emulsions presents significant challenges in membrane technology due to issues with low permeability, rejection rates, and membrane fouling. This study focuses on enhancing nanofibrous composite membranes to effectively separate microplastic contaminants (0.5µm) and oil-water emulsions in wastewater. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymeric nanofibers were produced using a needle-free electrospinning technique and attached to a nonwoven surface through lamination. The membranes were modified with alkaline treatment, biosurfactant (BS), TiO2, and CuO particles to prevent fouling and improve separation efficiency. The modified membranes demonstrated exceptional water permeability, with BS-modified membranes reaching above 9000 Lm-2h-1bar-1 for microplastic separation. However, BS modifications led to reduced water permeability during oil-water emulsion treatment. TiO2 and CuO further enhanced permeability and reduced fouling. The TiO2-modified membranes exhibited superior performance in oil-water emulsion separation, maintaining high oil rejection rates (~95%) and antifouling properties. The maximum microplastic and oil rejection rates were of 99.99% and 95.30%, respectively. This study illustrates the successful modification of membrane surfaces to improve the separation of microplastics and oil-water emulsions, offering significant advancements in wastewater treatment technology. © 2025, CC BY.

Spatial pooling (SP) and cross-channel pooling (CCP) operators have been applied to aggregate spatial features and pixel-wise features from feature maps in deep neural networks (DNNs), respectively. Their main goal is to reduce computation and memory overhead without visibly weakening the performance of DNNs. However, SP often faces the problem of losing the subtle feature representations, while CCP has a high possibility of ignoring salient feature representations, which may lead to both miscalibration of confidence issues and suboptimal medical classification results. To address these problems, we propose a novel dual-view framework, the first to systematically investigate the relative roles of SP and CCP by analyzing the difference between spatial features and pixel-wise features. Based on this framework, we propose a new pooling method, termed dual-view pyramid pooling (DVPP), to aggregate multi-scale dual-view features. DVPP aims to boost both medical image classification and confidence calibration performance by fully leveraging the merits of SP and CCP operators from a dual-axis perspective. Additionally, we discuss how to fulfill DVPP with five parameter-free implementations. Extensive experiments on six 2D/3D medical image classification tasks show that our DVPP surpasses state-of-the-art pooling methods in terms of medical image classification results and confidence calibration across different DNNs. © 2024, CC BY.

Research in the field of dynamic behaviors in neural networks with variable-order differences is currently a thriving area, marked by various significant discoveries. However, when it comes to discrete-time neural networks featuring fractional variable-order nonlocal and nonsingular kernels, there has been limited exploration. This paper stands as one of the initial contributions to this subject, focusing primarily on the topics of stability and synchronization in finite-time within discrete neural networks. The research employs the nabla ABC variable-order difference operator, with a primary approach involving the investigation of a novel Gronwall inequality using the Atangana-Baleanu difference variable-order sum operator. This analysis leads to the development of a uniqueness theorem and a criterion for the stability in finite-time of variable-order discrete neural networks. Furthermore, the requirements stemming from this type of stability and the novel Gronwall inequality serve as the foundation for establishing the conditions necessary for achieving finite-time synchronization in these networks, employing a specific control using state feedback method. Finally, the study utilizes numerical solutions to validate the obtained results.

On the link between explicit MPC and the face lattice of the lifted feasible domain

The paper provides a geometric interpretation for the explicit solution of the quadratic cost, linear-constrained MPC (model predictive control) problem. We link the face lattice of the lifted feasible domain (defined in the input and parameter space) with the critical regions which partition the parameter space and serve as polyhedral support for the piecewise affine explicit MPC solution. We provide geometric (face visibility) and algebraic (polyhedron emptiness) tests for the pruning of the candidate sets of active constraints.
