This paper is concerned with the container pre-marshalling problem, which involves relocating containers in the storage area so that they can be efficiently loaded onto ships without reshuffles. In reality, however, ship arrival times are affected by various external factors, which can cause the order of container retrieval to be different from the initial plan. To represent such uncertainty, we generate multiple scenarios from a multivariate probability distribution of ship arrival times. We derive a mixed-integer linear optimization model to find an optimal container layout such that the conditional value-at-risk is minimized for the number of misplaced containers responsible for reshuffles. Moreover, we devise an exact algorithm based on the cutting-plane method to handle large-scale problems. Numerical experiments using synthetic datasets demonstrate that our method can produce high-quality container layouts compared with the conventional robust optimization model. In order to provide high-quality recommendations for users, it is desirable to share and integrate multiple datasets held by different parties. However, when sharing such distributed datasets, we need to protect personal and confidential information contained in the datasets. To this end, we establish a framework for privacy-preserving recommender systems using the data collaboration analysis of distributed datasets. Numerical experiments with two public rating datasets demonstrate that our privacy-preserving method for rating prediction can improve the prediction accuracy for distributed datasets. This study opens up new possibilities for privacy-preserving techniques in recommender systems. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of wearing face masks as a preventive measure to reduce the spread of the virus. In medical settings, such as hospitals and clinics, healthcare professionals and patients are required to wear surgical masks for infection control. However, the use of masks can hinder facial recognition technology, which is commonly used for identity verification and security purposes. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based approach to detect faces covered by surgical masks in medical settings. We evaluated the proposed CNN model on a test set comprising of masked and unmasked faces. The results showed that our model achieved an accuracy of over 96% in detecting masked faces. Furthermore, our model demonstrated robustness to different mask types and fit variations commonly encountered in medical settings. Our approaches reaches state of the art results in terms of accuracy and generalization. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

The performance of a battery pack is greatly affected by an imbalance between the cells. Cell balancing is a very important criterion for Battery Management System (BMS) to operate properly. This paper presents the various cell balancing topologies which have been presented by various researchers in the past years. A novel topology has also been discussed, which improves the overall efficiency of the components being used. Various comparison parameters such as control, Speed, Efficiency, Power Effects, Manufacturability, Size, and Cost have been considered.

The utilization of solar energy in grid-connected photovoltaic installations has become increasingly significant. This article introduces a photovoltaic system seamlessly integrated with a three-phase network. The system employing a five-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) voltage source inverter is designed for a single-step connection to enhance power quality in the distribution network. The control technique employed for the efficient functioning of the photovoltaic system is based on the notion of instantaneous reactive power. Notably, this strategy is straightforward, operates the system throughout the day, and eliminates the need for Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) usage. The Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) Current controller sends switching signals to the NPC multilevel inverter, which does a great job of dynamic performance under steady-state and transient situations. The proportional-integral controller regulates the voltage of the Uninterruptible Power Supply DC bus capacitors. The proposed system undergoes comprehensive simulation validation under various irradiation levels.

Accurate identification and position of transmission lines is critical for robots to safely and effectively perform distribution network operations. However, such tasks are often challenged by complex lighting conditions, where depth information can be easily lost. Transmission lines have limited texture features and reflective surfaces, making it difficult to match image feature points. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a visual perception system for weak texture targets under complex lighting, based on an "eye-on-hand" configuration and a depth complementation algorithm. Furthermore, a high-precision identification and localization method for transmission line grasping points is developed, utilizing the fusion of binocular visual color maps and depth maps. The proposed method has been shown to effectively solve the problem of identifying and localizing the grasping points of transmission lines under complex lighting conditions. Experiments demonstrated that the method can improve the localization accuracy to within ±4mm, outperforming other algorithms. The method is characterized as simple and efficient, and it enhances the environmental adaptability of distribution network robots. © 2024 IEEE.

Early detection of infants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can lead to effective developmental support. In clinical practice, early screening of 18-month-old infants is implemented using a parent-completed questionnaire. However, research has suggested that signs of ASD may also appear in movement characteristics during the first few months of age. In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate infant movement from videos based on non-negative tensor factorization (NTF) and apply it to ASD risk assessment in the neonatal period. The proposed method applies NTF to pose data estimated from videos, and decomposes the infant’s movements into multiple components while considering the linkage between body parts. In the experiment, we evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed method using 36 low-risk infants and 13 high-risk infants for ASD, with the aim of applying the method to ASD risk assessment. The results showed that the proposed method captured the tendency for infants to perform different movements depending on their risk level. Machine learning analysis revealed that the proposed method identified ASD risk with an accuracy exceeding 70%, which was comparable or superior to the existing video evaluation method based on heuristically designed indicators.

Motivated by current sharing in power networks, we consider a class of output consensus (also called agreement) problems for nonlinear systems, where the consensus value is determined by external disturbances, e.g., power demand. This output consensus problem is solved by a simple distributed output feedback controller if a system is either Krasovskii or shifted passive, which is the only essential requirement. Convergence Rate Bounds for the Mirror Descent Method: IQCs, Popov Criterion and Bregman Divergence

This paper presents a comprehensive convergence analysis for the mirror descent (MD) method, a widely used algorithm in convex optimization. The key feature of this algorithm is that it provides a generalization of classical gradient-based methods via the use of generalized distance-like functions, which are formulated using the Bregman divergence. Establishing convergence rate bounds for this algorithm is in general a non-trivial problem due to the lack of monotonicity properties in the composite nonlinearities involved. In this paper, we show that the Bregman divergence from the optimal solution, which is commonly used as a Lyapunov function for this algorithm, is a special case of Lyapunov functions that follow when the Popov criterion is applied to an appropriate reformulation of the MD dynamics. This is then used as a basis to construct an integral quadratic constraint (IQC) framework through which convergence rate bounds with reduced conservatism can be deduced. We also illustrate via examples that the convergence rate bounds derived can be tight. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
