In this paper we discusses some pros and cons of using AJAX for increasing the usability of Web applications. As AJAX allows Web applications look like desktop applications, it can increase the learnability of a Web application. Nevertheless, AJAX can also be the source of end user frustration if the XMLHttpRequest is not supported by the browser, Javascript is not available, or an Internet connection is missing. We also provide some workarounds for server response time gaps, for example by providing visible user feedback messages) and enabling the back button to work properly.

Measurement based quantum computation, which requires only single particle measurements on a universal resource state to achieve the full power of quantum computing, has been recognized as one of the most promising models for the physical realization of quantum computers. Despite considerable progress in the past decade, it remains a great challenge to search for new universal resource states with naturally occurring Hamiltonians and to better understand the entanglement structure of these kinds of states. Here we show that most of the resource states currently known can be reduced to the cluster state, the first known universal resource state, via adaptive local measurements at a constant cost. This new quantum state reduction scheme provides simpler proofs of universality of resource states and opens up plenty of space to the search of new resource states.

We construct new families of multi-error-correcting quantum codes for the amplitude damping channel. Our key observation is that, with proper encoding, two uses of the amplitude damping channel simulate a quantum erasure channel. This allows us to use concatenated codes with quantum erasure-correcting codes as outer codes for correcting multiple amplitude damping errors. Our new codes are degenerate stabilizer codes and have parameters which are better than the amplitude damping codes obtained by any previously known construction.

The application of microarray data for cancer classification has recently gained in popularity. The main problem that needs to be addressed is the selection of a smaller subset of genes from the thousands of genes in the data that contributes to a disease. This selection process is difficult due to the availability of a small number of samples compared to the huge number of genes, many irrelevant genes, and noisy genes. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved binary particle swarm optimization to select a near-optimal (smaller) subset of informative genes that is relevant for cancer classification. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is superior to the experimental method and other related previous works in terms of classification accuracy and the number of selected genes. ©ISAROB 2009.

This selection process is difficult due to many irrelevant genes, noisy genes, and the availability of a small number of samples compared to a huge number of genes (higher-dimensional data). Hence, this paper aims to select a near-optimal (smaller) subset of informative genes that is most relevant for the cancer classification. To achieve the aim, an iterative approach based on genetic algorithms has been proposed. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed approach is superior to other related previous works as well as four methods experimented in this work. In addition a list of informative genes in the best gene subsets is also presented for biological usage. ©ISAROB 2009.

The notation and environment in conceptual modelling transform developers' initial perception about a system to a concrete model. Any usability constraints that the notation and environment impose on the modeling process affect not only the quality of the model but also the quality of the final product. This paper presents a usability profile for designing conceptual modelling methods that integrate graphical notation and formal mathematical notation. The profile was proposed based on a survey conducted on an instance of such methods, which combines the Unified Modelling Language (UML) and Event-B. The instruments used in the survey were the Cognitive Dimensions of Notations (CD) framework and several criteria suggested by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The analysis was conducted using the grounded theory approach. Thirteen participants responded to the survey. The survey suggests that graphical formal modelling requires deep understanding of the notations involved, strong support from the environment, well-organised models and high spatial ability. © 2009 The authors and IOS Press.

Manual reviews and inspections of software artefacts are time consuming and thus, automated analysis tools have been developed to support the quality assurance of software artefacts. Usually, software analysis tools are implemented for analysing only one specific language as target and for performing only one class of analyses. Furthermore, most software analysis tools support only common programming languages, but not those domain-specific languages that are used in a test process. As a solution, a framework for software analysis is presented that is based on a flexible, yet high-level facade layer that mediates between analysis rules and the underlying target software artefact; the analysis rules are specified using high-level XQuery expressions. Hence, further rules can be quickly added and new types of software artefacts can be analysed without needing to adapt the existing analysis rules. The applicability of this approach is demonstrated by examples from using this framework to calculate metrics and detect bad smells in Java source code, in UML models, and in test specifications written using the testing and test control notations (TTCN-3).

We propose a three-layer architecture model (TLAM) for wireless sensor networks. The first layer (bottom layer) consists of a network of resource-constrained sensor nodes deployed in the field. The second layer contains a set of resource-rich dynamic sink nodes forming an ad hoc network. The sinks at layer second are responsible to monitor and collect data from a region, called cluster. So the sinks at second layer are also knows as cluster sinks. At the third layer, there is a resource-rich static sink, known as zonal sink also, responsible for data collection from cluster sinks. A cluster sink may be few hops away from a static sensor node and moves to the vicinity of sensor nodes to collect the data. Each cluster sink continuously updates the zonal sink by propagating the collected data from the respective cluster. The zonal sink buffers the collected data and propagates to base station. Zonal sink is the one, responsible for data transmission from network environment to the base station, where the data is processed for further use. TLAM approach is robust, increases sensor life by allowing them to operate with a limited transmission range only and provides reduced delay as cluster sink continuously updates to zonal sink without query.

We illustrate the effective use of ATIM (ad hoc traffic indication message) window in static sensors to obtain potential energy savings for sensors during data dissemination in wireless sensor networks. The network consists of resource-rich mobile sink node and resource-constrained sensor nodes forming a square grid. Sink may be multihop away from the sensor nodes and in order to collect the data, it moves to the vicinity of the sensor nodes in the grid. Each sensor node in the grid uses an ATIM window and sleeps during that time to conserve energy. The sleeping sensor node wakes up at regular interval of time to read the beacon messages. If the message comes from sink, sensor node immediately reads the header part of query packet to check whether it is the targeted sensor. The targeted sensor further reads the remaining part of query packet and responds back to the sink with requested data. The rest of the sensor nodes just ignore the remaining part of the query packet and go to sleep mode. If the message comes from the peer sensor node, the neighbor nodes just ignore it. We consider an affordable wireless network system with four sensor nodes and one mobile sink. Mobile sink transfers the collected data directly to the control station.
