This paper describes an approach for generating customized benchmark applications from a software architecture description using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach. The benchmark generation and performance data capture tool implementation is based on widely used open source MDA frameworks. The business logic of the benchmark application is modeled in UML and generated by taking advantage of the existing generation "cartridges" so that the current component technology can be exploited in the benchmark. This greatly reduces the effort and expertise needed for benchmarking with complex component technology. We have also extended the MDA framework to model and generate a load testing suite and automatic performance measurement infrastructure. The approach complements current model-based performance prediction and analysis methods by generating the benchmark application from the same application architecture that the performance models are derived from. This provides the potential for tightly integrating runtime performance measurement with model-based prediction either for model validation or improving model prediction accuracy, We illustrate the approach using a case study based on EJB component technology.

Automated diagnosis of software faults can improve the efficiency of the debugging process, and is therefore an important technique for the development of dependable software. In this paper we study different similarity coefficients that are applied in the context of a program spectral approach to software fault localization (single programming mistakes). The coefficients studied are taken from the systems diagnosis / automated debugging tools Pinpoint, Tarantula, and AMPLE, and from the molecular biology domain (the Ochiai coefficient). We evaluate these coefficients on the Siemens Suite of benchmark faults, and assess their effectiveness in terms of the position of the actual fault in the probability ranking of fault candidates produced by the diagnosis technique. Our experiments indicate that the Ochiai coefficient consistently outperforms the coefficients currently used by the tools mentioned. In terms of the amount of code that needs to be inspected, this coefficient improves 5% on average over the next best technique, and up to 30% in specific cases. © 2006 IEEE.

Learning Objects is not a new approach in electronic learning system. It has been applied since more than seven years ago. It can be clearly seen in CanCore project [9] in Canada and the emerging of several standards of Learning Objects by well-known organizations such as IEEE. L3OP (Learning Objects technology in Object-Oriented Programming ELearning System) project applies the Learning Objects concept into electronic learning system focusing on digitalizing learning styles (especially among higher education students). The electronic learning systems have been used by these students since past few generations and many of them have been enhanced. However, some students still feel that the electronic learning systems are not as effective as they may seem. The reason is varieties of traditional methods of learning styles used by these students, for example, jotting down and highlighting notes cannot be done in the electronic learning systems. For example, some students prefer to use highlight pen or marker to underline the important notes. However, the electronic learning systems can not digitize the styles. The project is only concentrated on visual type of learners. The Learning Objects approach used in this project not only to ensure the organization of the database but also the reusability of the learning content itself.

For a large scale of software development, there is a tremendous number of software requirements documents in a collection which may be produced for different domains by different developer teams. They may be later reused to reduce cost and time for the next development. Thus, there is a need to retrieve ones that meet user's need efficiently. This paper presents an approach for software requirements specification retrieval in a form of use case description using use case structure and similarity computation between terms of use case query and use cases in the collection. The contribution of the paper has five main points; 1) the approach for retrieving use case description is proposed, 2) the developed tool supporting the approach is presented, 3) the experiment is designed to measure effectiveness of the approach, 4) the results of the experiment are shown to compare effectiveness of the approach to that of a general approach, and finally 5) the recommended use case description query template is proposed.

In this paper we propose a smart repeater that consumes less energy and is suitable for driving global interconnections in nanometre technologies. When there is coupling between interconnects, the effective capacitance of a given wire is a function not only of the physical geometry, but also the relative switching pattern described by the bits on the wire in question (the victim) and the adjacent wires (aggressors). The drive strength of a traditional repeater is static, resulting in a spread of the propagation delay, with the repeater strength being essentially too much for every bit pattern other than the worst-case pattern. In the proposed SMART repeater, the drive strength is dynamically altered depending on the relative bit pattern, by partitioning it into a Main Driver and Assistant Driver. For a higher effective load capacitance both drivers switch, while for a lower effective capacitance the assistant driver is quiet. By disconnecting part of the repeater when it is not needed, the total load capacitance to the previous stage is reduced, resulting in reduced energy consumption for those instances. It is shown that the potential average saving in energy can be as much 15% with a 18% jitter reduction over a traditional repeater for typical global wire lengths in nanometre technologies. H.264 is the new multimedia compression standard developed by VCEG and MPEG. In order to maximize the compression performance, H.264 adopts RDO mode decision techniques at the cost of very remarkable computational complexity. To reduce encoder complexity associated with the intra-prediction mode selection, in this paper, a fast intra prediction mode selection scheme is proposed. It is based on three improvement parts, including improvement of the intra prediction algorithm structure, fast selection between intra 4×4 block mode and intra 16×16 block mode, and the fast 4×4 luma block mode selection based on the luma similarity between reference pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme outperforms Pan's method, and compared with the test model JM8.6 provided by JVT, the proposed scheme reduces 83.10% coding time for intra frames and 50.94% coding time for all the frames while maintaining the PSNR and bit rate. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Negotiation involves the execution of rules and interaction among the agents toward the agreement, objective or outcomes. It is a complex process and need careful study and design. This paper focuses on experience sharing under the development of negotiation approach in a booking application (e.g. Smart Lecture Theatre). It consists of the conceptual ideal of negotiation as well as the methodology for life cycle development. The development life cycle has been structured into five phases: location determination, interaction protocol design, autonomy determination, agent binding and agent implementation. A simple negotiation application has been experimented for a simple argumentation negotiation application and an intelligent-based argumentation negotiation application. This paper has demonstrates the importance and capability of this methodology in structuring agent negotiation

When transacting and interacting through open computer networks, traditional methods used in the physical world for establishing trust can no longer be used. Creating virtual network substitutes with which people, organisations and software agents can derive trust in other parties requires computerised analysis of the underlying trust networks. This article describes an approach to trust network analysis using subjective logic (TNA-SL), that consists of the three following elements. Firstly it uses a concise notation with which trust transitivity and parallel combination of trust paths can be expressed. Secondly it defines a method for simplifying complex trust networks so that they can be expressed in this concise form. Finally it allows trust measures to be expressed as beliefs, so that derived trust can be automatically and securely computed with subjective logic. We compare our approach with trust derivation algorithms that are based on normalisation such as PageRank and EigenTrust. We also provide a numerical example to illustrates how TNA-SL can be applied. © 2006 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

The aim of this paper is to introduce a new approach which describes an automatic transformation process of electronic flat documents (HTML document for example), into reusable learning objects. Thus, the transformed content can be integrated, within management learning system. Our methodology proposes, firstly, a syntactical transformation of a flat electronic document into well-structured document. It tends secondly, to perform a semantic categorization of each piece of the content into an equivalent type of reusable learning object (Ajami, 2004).
