EBIFRY (a language for EmBedded Instruments in the FactoRY) is a programming language for embedded systems designed with the joint objectives of providing the simplicity of a scripting language while making it possible for programmers of all levels to create stable programs. We believe that the issue of memory management is of significant importance in seeking to achieve these objectives and selected a memory management strategy that can automatically manage dynamically created objects through their lifetimes, while keeping an approach that is fundamentally based on static object creation. In this paper we present the requirements that were designed for the EBIFRY language specifications in order to achieve the above objectives, describe some programs that were actually developed using EBIFRY, and show that the memory management strategy adopted in EBIFRY can be used effectively in practice. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Web applications exhibit dynamic behaviour through such features as animation, rapidly changing presentations, and interactive forms. The growing complexity of web applications requires a rigorous modelling approach capable of clearly and explicitly addressing code mobility issues. While mobile agent systems and programming languages support the implementation of code mobility with features such as applets or mobile agents, existing system analysis and design methods lack the facilities to model code mobility satisfactorily. OPM/Web is an extension of object-process methodology (OPM) for modelling distributed systems and web applications that enables intuitive modelling of code mobility concepts in a single framework. We propose generic OPM/Web models for common code mobility design paradigms, including Remote Evaluation, Code-on-Demand, PUSH and Mobile Agents. An OPM/Web model of a mobile application that handles requests for Quality of Service over the internet exemplifies the use and advantages of modelling such systems in OPM/Web. Quality of Service (QoS) management is critical for service-oriented enterprise architectures because services have different QoS characteristics, requesters have different requirements, and service interactions are decoupled. This paper proposes a QoS Management Architecture for dynamic processing of service- and flow-level quality attributes to support QoS requests and analyses in Web-service-oriented architectures. The architecture is implemented using Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL4WS), an interoperable integration model that facilitates automated process integration). The proposed approach extends BPEL4WS by integrating it with Web service-level agreements (WSLA) to support QoS and extending the BPEL4WS language to provide a new " " assertion that describes the location of a document's WSLA document. Under the proposed approach, quality attributes are defined, computed, and acted upon as dynamic characteristics of systems, with values constantly changing in operation The feasibility of the proposed approach is demonstrated using an illustrative travel reservation service flow example.

A hybrid method for real-time animation of trees swaying in wind fields

Trees are one of the most important elements of natural landscapes. Therefore, in computer graphics, there is a great demand for methods to realize the natural representation of trees in virtual landscapes in various fields such as the entertainment industry or environmental assessment in construction. Many studies have been made on techniques in which the shapes of trees are modeled but only a few studies have been reported on methods to incorporate the shapes with motions in a wind field. Most of these studies use physical simulation techniques based on the equations of motion to generate the branch motions and cannot realize the motions of individual leaves. In this paper, we propose a method to create the natural motions of individual leaves and branches swaying in a wind field. The proposed method uses a hybrid approach combining a stochastic method and a simulation method. The stochastic method is based on 1/f(beta) stop noise, which is observed in various natural phenomena, and provides natural motion to leaves and branches. In addition, a simple simulation method based on the spring model is applied to branches to enhance the reality of their motions. This method enables the real-time creation of the leaf and branch motions. Diverse motions according to tree species and shapes and wind conditions can be easily realized by controlling the parameters.

An architecture design of the intelligent agent for speech recognition and translation is presented in this paper. The design involves the agent architecture and the method of the agent is used. The architecture design will show the relationship between the intelligent agent and speech recognition also translation. The intelligent agent for speech recognition is called S - AGENT and T- AGENT for translation. The purpose of the S - AGENT is to facilitate for transmitting the speech data via internet or network. The S - AGENT is acting as a data transmit control to ensure the transmitted speech data will secure delivered The task of the T - AGENT is different from the S - AGENT. The T - AGENT is acting as information retrieval. It will process the output from the speech recognition and translates the output based on its information memory database. If the information cannot be found on its memory, it will search the information required from the database dictionary provided. At the same time, it learns the information and saves the information to its memory for the future purposed © 2004IEEE.

This paper looks into how integrating on-line purchasing with inventory management system for distributed retail chain stores can automate and aid the process of decision-making in relation to on-line product sales and distribution. It extends the work done in [1], to include not only on-demand and automatic communication between the retail chain store's head office and point-of-sale (POS) outlets, but also to include on-line purchasing capabilities for home users. The application uses distributed databases to store information relevant to customers, products and product transactions at different geographical locations. The system is designed to facilitate the management process between the head office and the POS outlets: it aids top-level management to make the right business decisions in terms of the right products being distributed at the right location and at the right time, and also products ordered by home users to be sent by the right POS outlet, and it aids low-level employees to manage the daily business transactions of each POS outlet efficiently. In recent years the Olympic Games have undergone vast criticism due to perceived subjective scoring in judged events, as for example figure skating and gymnastics. Judges' scores may be influenced by favoritism, human error, or possibly corruption. Audience participation in scoring represents a promising approach to meet these problems. In this paper we present an audience voting system that utilizes the natural behavior of sports spectators: clapping and cheering. The system consists of wireless motion sensors and microphones that enable spectators to cast their vote in real time. The sensors are worn by audience members and determine the clapping frequency of each participant. This facilitates continuous influence on the score throughout an athlete's performance. The audience score is presented on wall-sized stadium displays and might be contrasted with the judges' scores to encourage audience engagement. © 2004 ACM.

The current debate about the teaching of data structures is hampered because, as a community, we usually debate specifics about data structure implementations and libraries, when the real level of disagreement remains implicit - the intent behind our teaching. This paper presents a phenomenographic study of the intent of CS educators for teaching data structures in CS2. Based on interviews with Computer Science educators and analysis of CS literature, we identified five categories of intent: developing transferable thinking, improving students' programming skills, knowing "what's under the hood", knowledge of software libraries, and component thinking. The CS community needs to first debate at the level of these categories before moving to more specific issues. This study also serves as an example of how phenomenographic analysis can be used to inform debate on syllabus design in general. Copyright 2004 ACM.

Wireless sensor network technology promises to reveal fine-grained, dynamic changes in monitored variables of an outdoor landscape. But there are significant problems to be overcome in translating this vision to working systems. This paper describes the design and implementation of a reactive, event driven network for environmental monitoring of soil moisture and evaluates the effectiveness of this solution. A novel feature of our solution is its reactivity to the environment: when rain falls and soil moisture is changing rapidly, measurements are collected frequently, whereas during dry periods, between rainfall events, measurements are collected much less often. Reactivity allows us to focus on dynamic responses and limit the amount of useless data gathered, as well as improving robustness and network lifetime. The main contribution of the paper is to demonstrate that a reactive sensor network can deliver useful data on soil moisture responses to rainfall. Field trial results on the reactivity, robustness and longevity of the network are evaluated, and future improvements proposed.
