The Transactions on Pattern Languages of Programming subline aims to publish papers on patterns and pattern languages as applied to software design, development, and use, throughout all phases of the software life cycle, from requirements and design to implementation, maintenance and evolution. The primary focus of this LNCS Transactions subline is on patterns, pattern collections, and pattern languages themselves. The journal also includes reviews, survey articles, criticisms of patterns and pattern languages, as well as other research on patterns and pattern languages. The advancement of mobile multimedia communications, 5G, and Internet of Things (IoT) has led to the widespread use of edge devices, including sensors, smartphones, and wearables. This has generated in a large amount of distributed data, leading to new prospects for deep learning. However, this data is confined within data silos and contains sensitive information, making it difficult to be processed in a centralized manner, particularly under stringent data privacy regulations. Federated learning (FL) offers a solution by enabling collaborative learning while ensuring privacy. Nonetheless, data and device heterogeneity complicate FL implementation. This research presents a specialized FL algorithm for heterogeneous edge computing. It integrates a lightweight grouping strategy for homogeneous devices, a scheduling algorithm within groups, and a Split Learning (SL) approach. These contributions enhance model accuracy and training speed, alleviate the burden on resource-constrained devices, and strengthen privacy. Experimental results demonstrate that the GSFL outperforms FedAvg and SplitFed by 6.53× and 1.18×. Under experimental conditions with \(\alpha=0.05\), representing a highly heterogeneous data distribution typical of extreme Non-IID scenarios, GSFL showed better accuracy compared to FedAvg by 10.64%, HACCS by 4.53%, and Cluster-HSFL by 1.16%. GSFL effectively balances privacy protection and computational efficiency for real-world applications in mobile multimedia communications.

Unbelievable, we have reached the seventh edition of the XP2k+n conference! We started at the outset of the new millennium, and we are still proving that agile pr- esses were neither a millennium bug nor a YAF (yet another fad). In its first editions, this conference was a get-together of a few pioneers who - bated about how to make agile processes and methods accepted by the mainstream researchers and practitioners in softwareengineering. Welcome to the proceedings of the 2008 IFIP International Conference on Network and Parallel Computing (NPC 2008) held in Shanghai, China. NPC has been a premier conference that has brought together researchers and pr- titioners from academia, industry and governments around the world to advance the theories and technologies of network and parallel computing. The goal of NPC is to establish an international forum for researchers and practitioners to present their - cellent ideas and experiences in all system fields of network and parallel computing. The main focus of NPC 2008 was on the most critical areas of network and parallel computing, network technologies, network applications, network and parallel archit- tures, and parallel and distributed software. In total, the conference received more than 140 papers from researchers and prac- tioners. Each paper was reviewed by at least two internationally renowned referees and selected based on its originality, significance, correctness, relevance, and clarity of presentation. Among the high-quality submissions, only 32 regular papers were accepted by the conferences. All of the selected conference papers are included in the conference proceedings. After the conference, some high-quality papers will be r- ommended to be published in the special issue of international journals. We were delighted to host three well-known international scholars offering the k- note speeches, Sajal K. Das from University Texas at Arlington USA, Matt Mutka from Michigan State University and David Hung-Chang Du from University of M- nesota University of Minnesota.
