Data mining techniques provide a popular and powerful toolset to address both clinical and management issues in the area of health care. This paper describes the study of assigning prostate cancer patients into homogenous groups with the aim to support future clinical treatment decisions. The cluster analysis based model is suggested and an application of non-smooth non-convex optimization techniques to solve this model is discussed. It is demonstrated that using the optimization based approach to data mining of a prostate cancer patients database can lead to generation of a significant amount of new knowledge that can be effectively utilized to enhance clinical decision making.

We report on the solar diurnal variation of the galactic cosmic-ray intensity observed by the Tibet III air shower array during the period from 1999 to 2003. In the higher-energy event samples (12 and 6.2 TeV), the variations are fairly consistent with the Compton-Getting anisotropy due to the terrestrial orbital motion around the Sun, while the variation in the lower-energy event sample (4.0 TeV) is inconsistent with this anisotropy. This suggests an additional anisotropy superposed at the multi-TeV energies, e.g., the solar modulation effect. This is the highest-precision measurement of the Compton-Getting anisotropy ever made.

The Object Constraint Language (OCL) is a notational language for analysis and design of software systems, which is used in conjunction with the Unified Modelling Language (UML) to specify the semantics of the building blocks precisely. OCL can also be used by other languages, notations, methods and software tools in order to specify restrictions and other expressions of their models. Likewise, OCL is used by the Object Management Group (OMG) in the definition of other fast spreading industrial standards such as Meta Object Facility (MOF) or XML Metadata Interchange (XMI). Support tools aimed at making this language easier to use are becoming available. These tools are capable of supporting and handling OCL expressions. This paper presents a comparative study of the main tools currently available, both commercial and freely available ones. The study is very practical, with the advantages and disadvantages of the different tools being pointed out. The evaluations made may be of use in helping those developers and analysts who already use the language, as well as those who intend to use it in the near future, to choose the OCL tool which best adapts to their requirements.

The use of laboratory experiments is a critically important aspect of engineering education where experience has shown that a complementary approach combining theoretical and practical exercises is vital for effective learning. Increasingly, teaching institutions are offering Web based remote access to distant laboratories as part of an overall e-learning strategy. The design and implementation of effective and usable remote experimentation facilities poses unique challenges given the inherent complexities of the learning environment and the constraints imposed by the delivery medium. Developments in recent years have addressed many of these issues. However autonomous learning environments by their very nature offer minimal educator assistance and from a students perspective it is inevitable that at some stage of the experimental process, context specific help will be required. We address this issue in the context of remote experimentation for embedded systems and present an adaptive intelligent learning environment with intelligent user help.
