Efforts to get reliable data about the efficiency of a set of basis functions in representing a Reed-Muller canonical form with the minimum number of coefficients are frustrated by the long computation times necessary for calculation. Using an integrated suite of utility programs employing fast transforms, we provide statistics on the performance of six different algebras for two, three, four and five variables. Based on experimental results we suggest that the choice of basis functions has only a marginal effect for random samples from the entire function space. In addition we provide evidence which suggests that providing additional polarities has a more and more marginal effect upon efficiency.

The goal of this study is to develop collaborative learning entity metadata (CLEM) that represents design, practice, and evaluation of collaborative learning activities. In order to clarify CLEM, the framework or meta-model of collaborative learning should be structured. This paper describes the initial version of CLEM, which is capable of describing collaborative learning not only from a technical standpoint, but also from pedagogical and learning standpoints. Once CLEM has been fully developed, teachers will be able to represent, extract, share, reuse, and exchange their knowledge of collaborative learning activities by using CLEM.

The automatic music recognition from an audio performance is a key problem and a challenge for coding music in western music notation in the digital world. This problem has been addressed in several manners and suitable results obtained when a single and specific instrument and monophonic music are processed. The aim is the development of a system for the automatic music transcription being able to recognise and cope with different music instruments. Experimental results have shown that for monophonic pieces the recognition is quite viable, while for polyphonic pieces several problems still exist.

This paper describes a full-wave EMI (electromagnetic interference) simulator BLESS (Board Layout Evaluation and Suggestion System) for the printed wiring board (PWB) design with the consideration of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and power/signal integrity. This simulator is based on the parallel-distributed finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, and works on a PC-cluster. The accuracy of analysis by BLESS is verified in comparison with s-parameter measurements. Using the simulator, the full-wave analysis of the multi-layer PWB in a commercial digital still camera is demonstrated. With the aid of what-if analysis results, PWB design can be verified and optimized with less number of trial productions.

Electroencephalograph (EEG) recordings during right and left motor imagery can be used to move a cursor to a target on a computer screen. Such an EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI) can provide a new communication channel to replace an impaired motor function. It can be used by e.g., handicap users with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In this study, statistical pattern recognition method based on AR model was introduced to discriminate the EEG signals recorded during right and left motor imagery. And learning methods (processing period for parameter estimation, AR order, etc.) were investigated. Finally, the effectiveness of our method was confirmed through the experimental studies.

We have developed "DigitalIEE" a system that supports collaborative environmental education via distributed virtual space accessible from real and virtual worlds. With DigitalEE, learners in the real world and environmental specialists in virtual worlds can make interactive communication via "3D virtual nature," which is a VRML world three-dimensionally representing real forest, while mutually sharing learners' achievements and environmental specialists' knowledge that are accumulated in common knowledge databases on the server. Our system realizes various unique functions such as accumulation of environmental knowledge derived from real natural experiences, education supported by specialized knowledge of environmental specialists from all over the world, virtual tours to the natural environment that is not easily accessible, and global arguments on environmental issues with worldwide participants. The system aims at enlightening learners' consciousness of environmental preservation by realization of these functions that have been difficult to support with conventional methods in environmental education.

This paper describes the searching method for positions of decoupling capacitors on the printed circuit board (PCB). In this method, first, the distributions of electromagnetic field between power and ground planes in the time domain are simulated, using FDTD method. Next, the distribution of Poynting vectors in the frequency domain is investigated, using fast Fourier transform (FFT). Furthermore, this method finds the optimal location of decoupling capacitor so that the Poynting vector is the highest. Finally, we analyze the distribution of magnetic field emission above the signal plane in the x and y axes in the specified range of frequency and verify the validity of our method.

With the progress of integration of circuits and PCBs (printed circuit boards), novel techniques have been required for verification of signal integrity. Noise analysis of the power/ground planes is one of the most important issues. This paper describes a high-speed simulator for PCBs which contain interconnects with nonlinear terminations. This simulator is based on the environmental tool ASSIST constructed for the development of circuit simulators, and is combined with PRIMA (passive reduced-order interconnect macromodeling algorithm). In this simulator, an efficient implementation of PRIMA is considered using a voltage-controlled current source (VCCS) model. Finally, this simulator is applied to analysis of the power/ground planes of simple PCBs, and the validity is verified.
