Light field visualization commonly provides a single content over the entire field of view. However, the angularly-selective nature of the technology enables the simultaneous visualization of different contents at different viewing angles. Yet segmenting the valid viewing area comes with content interference as well in forms of separation zones, resulting invalid viewing domains. In this paper, we introduce a study on the separation zone of split-domain light field visualization. We created a static-content-based scenario in which we split the valid viewing area into two distinct domains, with a separation zone in between them. This was achieved by merging two light field contents in the middle with an instantaneous switch. The resulting visualization on a light field display was captured by a DSLR camera from two viewing distances, and it was compared to the crosstalk effect caused by insufficient angular resolution. © 2024 IEEE.

Face recognition applications have grown in parallel with the size of datasets, complexity of deep learning models and computational power. However, while deep learning models evolve to become more capable and computational power keeps increasing, the datasets available are being retracted and removed from public access. Privacy and ethical concerns are relevant topics within these domains. Through generative artificial intelligence, researchers have put efforts into the development of completely synthetic datasets that can be used to train face recognition systems. Nonetheless, the recent advances have not been sufficient to achieve performance comparable to the state-of-the-art models trained on real data. To study the drift between the performance of models trained on real and synthetic datasets, we leverage a massive attribute classifier (MAC) to create annotations for four datasets: two real and two synthetic. From these annotations, we conduct studies on the distribution of each attribute within all four datasets. Additionally, we further inspect the differences between real and synthetic datasets on the attribute set. When comparing through the Kullback-Leibler divergence we have found differences between real and synthetic samples. Interestingly enough, we have verified that while real samples suffice to explain the synthetic distribution, the opposite could not be further from being true.

One of the problems faced by engineering and science students is focusing solely on technical knowledge while needing more cultural context. In today's interconnected world, addressing global challenges necessitates collaborative efforts from individuals across nations. Accordingly, a joint course between Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan has been established. The recent theme of the course, 'Gamification towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),' aimed to foster global citizenship and address SDGs through multicultural collaboration. This study examines the similarities and differences in problem identification between Thai and Japanese student groups participating in the course. Data was collected from discussions, presentations, and group assignments throughout the course. The findings indicate that while both groups share common concerns, such as waste management, language barriers, and transportation issues, their perspectives and proposed solutions are influenced by cultural characteristics. Thai students emphasized infrastructural inadequacies and local traditions, whereas Japanese students focused on efficiency and the impacts of tourism. The study highlights the importance of understanding cultural nuances in collaborative international projects to achieve effective and innovative solutions to global challenges. © 2024 IEEE.

Fairness Under Cover: Evaluating the Impact of Occlusions on Demographic Bias in Facial Recognition

This study investigates the effects of occlusions on the fairness of face recognition systems, particularly focusing on demographic biases. Using the Racial Faces in the Wild (RFW) dataset and synthetically added realistic occlusions, we evaluate their effect on the performance of face recognition models trained on the BUPT-Balanced and BUPT-GlobalFace datasets. We note increases in the dispersion of FMR, FNMR, and accuracy alongside decreases in fairness according to Equilized Odds, Demographic Parity, STD of Accuracy, and Fairness Discrepancy Rate. Additionally, we utilize a pixel attribution method to understand the importance of occlusions in model predictions, proposing a new metric, Face Occlusion Impact Ratio (FOIR), that quantifies the extent to which occlusions affect model performance across different demographic groups. Our results indicate that occlusions exacerbate existing demographic biases, with models placing higher importance on occlusions in an unequal fashion, particularly affecting African individuals more severely. Numerous connected machines compose the Internet of Things (IoT) like sensors and actuators, via wired or wireless networks. The number of IoT apps, including Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), Healthcare, Smart communities, and Wearable have recently risen significantly. Data Protection and Security is becoming more critical as the number of IoT-linked devices grows. In this paper, we suggest a new deep learning-based intrusion detection system (DL-IDS) to identify security breaches in IoT environments to address the difficulties of protecting IoT applications. There are several IDSs developed by researchers, optimal learning and management of data set functions are neglected, which are essential problems that impact the accuracy of tracking threats. To achieve optimum detection recognition, the presented framework incorporates the SMO technique and the Deep stacked polynomial network. SMO chooses the optimal features in the data, and SDPN categorizes it as regular or vulnerable. The presented model is analyzed for performance assessment in comparison to the state-of-The-Art decision-making models. In terms of accuracy, recall, precision, and F-score, the detailed review suggests that presented technique acquires enhanced performance and is immensely efficient. © 2024 IEEE.

The need for aerial platforms capable of sustained operation is critical in fields such as surveillance, agricultural monitoring, disaster response, and temporary telecommunication systems. Traditional unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are hampered by limited battery capacity and inefficient energy utilization. This paper introduces an autonomous vertical flight drone tethered to a ground-based platform, which overcomes these limitations. The drone is designed to optimize its position and energy usage by harnessing wind currents, functioning similarly to a kite when conditions permit. This is enabled by a custom-designed autopilot system comprising both hardware and software tailored for this application. We detail the model identification process for three vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone systems, employing authentic data that measures lateral positional errors from the tether. Robust mixed sensitivity controllers are developed and implemented. The effectiveness of these controllers is validated through simulations showing their capability to handle uncertainties. Furthermore, the practical application and robust performance of the system are confirmed by a real-world case study, highlighting its potential in real operational environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Traffic congestion in urban areas presents a major challenge to efficient transportation systems. Recent advancements in traffic management provide promising solutions, with perimeter control emerging as a technique to tackle network-wide congestion. However, it is crucial to identify geographically connected homogeneously congested areas for effective implementation. This research explores the application of clustering techniques, particularly geographical self-organizing maps (GeoSOM), to identify spatially connected and homogeneously congested areas within transportation networks. While GeoSOM has found applications across various domains, its adaptation to transportation networks for congestion clustering is novel. This study introduces and implements an adaptation of the GeoSOM algorithm tailored for the large-scale urban environment of downtown Los Angeles. Its performance is assessed through a comparative evaluation with two other clustering algorithms, namely DBSCAN and K-means. The results demonstrate that GeoSOM surpasses other clustering algorithms, exhibiting improvements of up to 43% in traffic density variance, up to 61% in the spatial quantization error, and 15% in the quantization error. This finding demonstrates that the proposed clustering algorithm is effective in identifying a spatially homogeneous congested area within a large-scale transportation network. The medical field is incredibly stressful for both specialists and patients, especially when dealing with life threatening cases. Brain tumor identification is one of the most challenging tasks even for experts in the field. Fortunately, the evolution of machine learning techniques and their flexibility to be integrated into many different fields, including tumor identification and classification has greatly simplified this task. For the physicians to accurately diagnose a patient, they must first have a lot of knowledge and years of experience in addition to going through many cases. Machine learning simplifies this process when it comes to learning and using this knowledge to decide without human intervention. If the data fed to the model is accurate, the decisions made will be more accurate. In this paper, an automated machine learning model is developed to identify brain tumors. Different datasets are utilized in the developed model. The accuracy achieved by the model lies between 60% and 70%. Another dataset is then used, and the model shows an accuracy of 99%, precision of 83%, F1 score of 77% and recall of 75%.
