Seminar on Neural Network Applications in Electrical Engineering

This paper covers the state of the art in nonlinear dynamical system identification using artificial neural networks (ANN). The main approaches in the last two decades are presented in unified framework. ANN has unique characteristics, which enable them to model nonlinear dynamical systems. The main problems with the choice of ANN model structure are considered and commonly used identification schemes are proposed. A procedure for derivation of parameter estimation law using Lyapunov synthesis approach, which guarantees stability and convergence of the overall identification scheme, is presented

This paper presents an approach to resolve the problem of authoring and interchanging educational material, based on web services. Here we describe the ultimate goal, of reusing and interchanging freely adaptive eleaming material, shortly sketch previous solutions, showing their benefits but also limitations and then introduce our web-service based approach. Finally, we discuss the gains brought by our proposed solution. © 2006 IEEE.

We propose a new method of speech enhancement based on auto gain control (AGC) using two channel inputs to deal with transient noises. Auto gain control is considered to be relatively ineffective for reducing noises that are superimposed on speech. Nevertheless, it offers advantages for addressing problems posed by musical noise and spectral distortion. This method combines two operations for obtaining accurate gain. One is spectral subtraction for two-channel input (2chSS);the other is self-offset of the noise with pre-whitening. This study also addresses a coherence based post-filter to reduce uncorrelated noise components among channels. The proposed method is evaluated in experiments across three noise conditions in which (i) impulsive noises, (ii) stationary car noise, and (iii) speech noise are present, respectively. Objective measures and spectrograms demonstrate marked improvements over other two-microphone based methods, but subjective preference tests reveal that the proposed method is less preferred than the equivalent of a nonprocessed signal in the case of stationary car noise (ii). The performance of the proposed method and the conventional 2chSS were even in the case of speech noise (iii). These results of subjective tests reflect some disadvantages of the AGC processing. Those drawbacks involve degradation of noise consistency in stationary noise conditions and residual noises in desired speech segments. Nevertheless, subjective tests in the case of noise (i) demonstrate that the proposed method is the most preferred among the methods compared here. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed particularly for this noise condition. © 2006 IEEE.

Virtual endoscopes give internal views of the human body without penetrating it, based on a set of parallel cross-sections produced with any computer tomography method. This paper presents some ideas concerning the design and implementation of a software system, which acts like a virtual endoscope. It takes into account the general requirements of the system, gives a solution that uses a multi-step algorithm, and finally shows the resulting 3-D images. Most of the algorithmic steps have several possible solutions. Our virtual endoscope establishes 3-D internal views based on sets of 2-D slices, which originate from magnetic resonance imaging devices. The chain of the applied image processing methods consists of the followings: (1) Adequate pre-filtering to eliminate the low-frequency intensity non-uniformity (INU) artifact, and high-frequency “salt-and-pepper” disturbances; (2) Segmentation of the stack of MRI slices using an enhanced fuzzy C-means algorithm; (3) 3-D surface recovery algorithm based on level set methods and fast marching methods; (4) Interactive visualization using modern computer graphics technologies, providing the possibility to measure distances, areas, volumes as well. The quality of service provided by the chosen method mainly depends on the resolution of input images.

Creating a good quality Adaptive Educational Hypermedia (AEH) system involves a great expenditure of time, effort and money, especially to author the materials in order to implement adaptivity. Moreover, authoring AEH systems is as hard as maintaining them. Furthermore, with the new advances in AEH development, the authored content in a given system can become outdated very rapidly. When the massive overhead in authoring is combined with the possibility of the current AEH system becoming unavailable due to lack of maintenance, providing interoperability of adaptive systems becomes necessary. This paper describes our research on providing interoperability of user models between different AEH systems via a one-to-one conversion between two AEH systems, MOT and WHURLE. Here, we identify the differences and commonalities and address how these influence the efficiency of the conversion of the two systems' user models. Although this conversion is done via simple peer-to-peer interaction, it can be easily extended to make use of semantic web technologies, as for example RDF or XML conversion formats, or web services for user model exchange. Therefore, we consider that our work on feature extractions sets the basis for such conversions for the Web and Semantic Web. Copyright 2006 ACM.

A modern automated diagnostic and maintenance system is one of a sphere, where we can utilize new signal processing and computer possibilities. Measuring data processing system allows communication with embedded systems, an embedded systems control, a data collection from sensors, various signal analyses, and react to limits transcendence. There is a possibility of setting various parameters, so this automated system is very universal and flexible. The paper shortly introduces diagnostic signal analysis methods, an applied embedded system with digital signal processor.

This paper describes processing and communications in distributed embedded systems Distributed processing and communications plays important role in applications whose parts (procedures) are executed outside the local node in remote nodes distributed in network. The most important are web services and related protocols (SOAP, XML-RPC). The solution is demonstrated on the QNX Transparent Distributed Processing as an alternative to standard distributed processing based on RFC (Remote Procedure Call).

Autoimmunity is characterized by the reaction of cells (autoreactive T lymphocytes) or products (autoantibodies) of the immune system against the organism's own antigens (autoantigens). It may be part of the physiological immune response ("natural autoimmunity") or pathologically induced, which may eventually lead to development of clinical abnormalities ("autoimmune diseases"). Many different autoimmune diseases can occur, but all are characterized by the inappropriate or excessive immune response against autoantigens, leading to chronic inflammation, tissue destruction, and/or dysfunction. To date, more than 60 diseases have a proven or strongly suspected autoimmune etiology. Generally, autoimmune diseases are perceived to be relatively uncommon. However, when all autoimmune diseases are combined, the estimated prevalence is high (3-5% of the general population), which underlines their importance to public health. Because of difficulties in diagnosis and in designing and standardizing epidemiological studies, limited data are available, and the prevalence may actually be underestimated. Nonetheless, there is epidemiological evidence of increasing prevalence of certain autoimmune diseases in highly industrialized countries, which cannot be attributed to better diagnosis alone. Furthermore, there is growing evidence that autoimmune mechanisms may play a role in many other diseases (atherosclerosis, for instance). Autoimmune diseases are multifactorial. Both intrinsic factors (e.g. genetics, hormones, age) and environmental factors (e.g. infections, diet, drugs, environmental chemicals) may contribute to the induction, development, and progression of autoimmune diseases. Environmental factors are believed to be a major factor responsible for their increased prevalence. Environmental factors operating in a genetically susceptible host may directly initiate, facilitate, or exacerbate the pathological immune process, induce mutations in genes coding for immunoregulatory
