An approach to designing fuzzy logic controllers based on the knowledge about how to control a process and the experience of operators working with the process is presented. The fuzzy control goals are to reach the best transient and steady state performances. To obtain these performances, the rule base and fuzzy set membership functions of the fuzzy logic controllers must be adjusted. Two approaches are developed. One approach is to use an operator to change the fuzzy controller parameters by trials and errors. Another approach is to design a self organizer fuzzy controller. Some examples of fuzzy temperature control systems are presented.

In the paper a continuous-time approach to parameter estimation of continuous-time systems is addressed. A linear continuous-time single-input single-output system model described by means of a transfer function is taken into consideration. A weighted quadratic criterion function, which defines the quality of the estimation process, the resulting least-squares algorithm and its characteristics are expressed in the continuous-time domain. In order to accommodate the continuous-time design to the discrete-time domain, various numerical methods are proposed. Simulation results that illustrate the performance of the proposed methods are presented and discussed.

Mr. Dirlik recently completed a master of science program in applied physics at The Johns Hopins University and currently works in the Radar Cross Section and Target Physics Branch of the Signatures Directorate at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Corderoke Division. He has worked on Navy low observable programs since 1990. Stephen Hambric:is a research associate at the Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his B. S. and M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his D. Sc. in mechnical engineering from the George Washington University. He has worked on several computer aided multidiscikplinary design and optimization projects over the years including an automated propeller design system and a structural acoustic optimization capability. Dr. Shpour Azarm:is currently working as an associate professor with the Design and Manufacturing Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of maryland at College Park. Dr Azarm's expertise is in the areas of optimization-based designed and concurrent design and optimization of multidisciplinary systems. He was a consultant at Black & Decker Corporation (summer 1996) and worked as a Navy senior summer faculty fellow (summer 1995) and a NASA summer faculty fellow (summer 1994). He was a visiting scientist at NASA Langley Research Center for Multidisciplinary Analysis and Applied Structural Optimzatiom at the University of Siegen in Germany (spring 1992) and the Design Institute of the Technical University of Denmark (summer 1990). A prototype concurrent engineering tool has been developed for the preliminary design of composite topside structures for modern navy warships. This tool, named GELS for the Concurrent Engineering of Layered Structures, provides designers with an immediate assessment of the impacts of their decisions on several disciplines which are important to the performance of a modern naval topside structure, including electromagnetic interference effects (EMI), radar cross section (RCS), structural integrity, cost, and weight. Preliminary analysis modules in each of these disciplines are integrated to operate from a common set of design variables and a common materials database. Performance in each discipline and an overall fitness function for the concept are then evaluated. A graphical user interface (GUI) is used to define requirements and to display the results from the technical analysis modules. Optimization techniques, including feasible sequential quadratic programming (FSQP) and exhaustive search are used to modify the design variables to satisfy all requirements simultaneously. The development of this tool, the technical modules, and their integration are discussed noting the decisions and compromises required to develop and integrate the modules into a prototype conceptual design tool.

In 1973 he joined the faculty of Electrical Engineering at Assiut University Egypt as an Assistant Professor and in October 1977 he became an Associate Professor. During the academic years of 1977 to 1979 he was an Alexander-von-Humboldt Fellow in the Electrical Engineering Department TU Munic/Germany and the Electrical Engineering Department University of Liverpoo YGB. In September 1979 he began work as a Researcher with General Electric Co. Pittsfield MANSA. In January 1982 he rejoined Assiut University as a Professor of Electrical Power Engineering. During the academic years of 1982 to 1984 he was Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering University of Jordad Amman. During the academic years of 1982 to 1984 he was a visiting Full Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering Michigan Technological University Houghton NSA. From 1990 to 1994 he was a Professor of Electrical Power Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals Dhahran/Saudi Arabia. He had obtained Research Fellowships at the Military Technical University of Hamburg Eemany in 1984 at the University of Leedd GB in 1988 at Kaiserslautern University/Germany in 1989 and at Michigan Technological University in 1990. This paper proposes a linear-programming optimization-based method for reactive power scheduling using generator terminal voltages and reactive outputs, transformer tap-settings and switchable reactive power sources as control variables. Dual linear programming is applied to minimize a composite objective function consisting of the cost of the adjusted control variables and the system transmission losses. The proposed composite objective function is more economical than that of the minimum total adjustment of the control variables and calls for less adjustments of var sources to meet the desired voltage limits. The proposed method is applicable to practical transmission and distribution networks, 500 kV to 11 kV of small and large sizes.

A Force control Method Using the Relative Motion between the Manipulator and a Workpiece

control methods based on using the relative motion between the manipulator and the workpiece are described for controlling the force of a one-dimensional manipulator, in which it is assumed that there are no collisions between the manipulator and the workpiece and we use a computed force law which is similar to the computed torque law in the trajectory tracking problem of a manipulator. We consider two cases depending on whether the position and velocity of the workpiece (or end-effector) are available or not to calculate the computed force control. The effectiveness of the proposed control methods is illustrated by some computer simulations.

In the same year he joined the Electrical Faculty of Warsaw University of Technology where he is presently employed as a professor and head of the power system protection and control group. A study of power system transient stability enhancement through effective use of static VAR compensator is presented. It is shown that optimal state‐variable control can be approximately realized as a simple closed‐loop control based on locally measurable electric quantities. In order to make this regulation more effective and insensitive to the changes of the network parameters and loading condition it is proposed to use simple adaptive control with dynamic gain tuned by additional control loops. Tests done for two‐machine and multi‐machine systems have confirmed the validity and robustness of the proposed control method. Copyright © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

There is evidence that, among all design domains of hard real time systems, architectural issues gained the lowest research interest. Universal architectures, which are generally applied as hardware bases for hard real time applications, are seldom behaving in a fully predictable wav. In the paper, several commonly used techniques which prevent temporal determinism of instruction execution are enumerated. An asymmetrical multiprocessor architecture for hard real time applications is presented, whose temporal behaviour is fully predictable. Some adequate features are discussed which are incorporated into the processor's implementation.

He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Drives from Budapest Technical University Budapest/Hungary in 1980. Since then he has been working as Assistant Professor in the Electronics Research Institute (ERI) NRC. Since 1984 he has been head of the Power Elecronics Laboratory at ERI. The tremendous progress in semiconductor technology has made solid state DC motor drives suitable for many practical applications. In this work a simple method for gate control of a semiconverter circuit feeding a separately excited DC motor is presented which is used to vary the motor speed. The transient as well as steady‐state characteristic performances have been obtained theoretically using closed form solution and experimentally using digital techniques. The required firing pulses were generated digitally using a 16‐bit microprocessor system. A set‐up for the experimental system has been designed and built in the laboratory.
