This review explores the advancements in MXene-based nanomaterials as flame-retardant additives for polymers and composites, driven by increasing fire safety demands across industries. It highlights the critical role of flame-retardant materials in mitigating fire hazards in structures, electronics, transportation, and textiles, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions due to stricter safety regulations. MXenes, a class of two-dimensional nanomaterials with unique structural properties such as high surface area, tunable composition, and superior thermal stability, are presented as promising candidates. The review discusses various synthesis and incorporation techniques for MXenes in polymer matrices, showcasing improvements in flame retardancy, mechanical properties, and thermal stability. Additionally, it emphasizes the multifunctionality of MXenes, which offer conductivity, electromagnetic shielding, and mechanical reinforcement alongside flame suppression. In conclusion, the review underscores MXenes' potential to address challenges in flame-retardant materials, advocating for further research to optimize their applications and explore synergies with other agents to enhance safety and sustainability in engineering materials.

The problem of the rapid creation of effective web applications of one class using formal means is considered. A conceptual approach to its solution is offered based on an analysis of the peculiarities of the construction of web applications. Our approach is based on defining the standard web application architecture and selecting its components using formal methods in accordance with user requirements. A formal logical system is proposed that uses the design of web applications as a process of outputting a formula specified according to the needs of the user, which defines the schemes of execution of the modules of the system. An important feature of this approach is the ability to visualise the process of designing the system in 3D, which creates the conditions for effective interaction between developers and machine development tools.

The role of asymptomatic individuals in the COVID-19 pandemic via complex networks

Background Recent seroprevalence studies have tried to estimate the real number of asymptomatic cases affected by COVID-19. It is of paramount importance to understand the impact of these infections in order to prevent a second wave. This study aims to model the interactions in the population by means of a complex network and to shed some light on the effectiveness of localised control measures in Italy in relation to the school opening in mid-September. Methods The formulation of an epidemiological predictive model is given: the advantage of using this model lies in that it discriminates between asymptomatic and symptomatic cases of COVID-19 as the interactions with these two categories of infected individuals are captured separately, allowing for a study on the impact of asymptomatic cases. This model is then extended to a structured nonhomogeneous version by means of the Watts-Strogatz complex network, which is adopted widely to model societal interactions as it holds the small world property. Finally, a case study on the situation in Italy is given: first the homogeneous model is used to compare the official data with the data of the recent seroprevalence study from Istat;second, in view of the return to school in mid-September, a study at regional level is conducted. Findings The proposed model captures an aspect of COVID-19 which is crucial in controlling the further spread of the contagion and in preventing a second wave: the interactions with undetected cases who have therefore not been isolated, mostly asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic, namely 1-2 symptoms without anosmia or ageusia, and their impact on latent infections. The evolution of the pandemic is well captured by model fitting with official data from the Protezione Civile, both at a national level as well as regional level. This paper introduces an approach to temperature prediction by employing three distinct machine learning models: K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), and Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) which are integrated into Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The dataset consists of inputs, represented by the features x and y, and the corresponding output, which is the temperature. The case study is fluid flow of nanofluid through a pipe and the nanofluid contains CuO particles. To enhance model efficacy, the Political Optimizer (PO) algorithm was utilized for fine-tuning purposes. The findings substantiate the capability of the optimized frameworks in delivering precise temperature estimations. GPR yielded a notable R value of 0.998, reflecting a strong concordance between the estimated and actual measurements. In a comparable manner, the KNN approach exhibited outstanding predictive performance, also attaining an R value of 0.998. MLP, although slightly lower in performance compared to the other models, still proves to be a reliable predictor of temperature values, with an R-squared score of 0.984. Overall, the combination of the PO algorithm and the machine learning models showcases promising results in temperature prediction. The study's findings offer valuable insights for decision-making processes in a variety of domains that rely on accurate temperature forecasting.

In this paper we present a mathematical model and an algorithm for solving a task scheduling problem in computing cluster. The problem is considered as a 2D packing problem. Each multi-node task is treated as a set of separate subtasks with common constrains. BACKGROUND:Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), remains a global health challenge, particularly with the emergence of multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant strains. Mycolic acid biosynthesis is essential for the integrity of Mtb's cell wall, offering promising therapeutic intervention targets. The thioesterase domain of polyketide synthase 13, Pks13-TE, is at the heart of this pathway and, therefore, an attractive drug target. METHODS:1228 natural compound libraries were computationally screened to identify the most potentially active Pks13-TE inhibitors. In silico virtual screening was done on top candidates using MTiOpenScreen based on binding affinity. The molecular dynamics simulation was applied to analyze the structural properties in terms of stability, compactness, and flexibility of the post-validation of the docking result. The MMGBSA method was used to calculate the binding-free energy. Further conformational landscape analysis was applied using FEL. RESULTS:Three such promising compounds were identified: ZINC000008214766, ZINC000006845076, and ZINC000253498755. The compound ZINC000008214766 showed the most favorable binding interactions by making multiple hydrogen bonds and van der Waals contacts with Pks13-TE active site residues. MD simulations have revealed that it is consistently stable with minimal fluctuations and compact conformation. The MM/GBSA analysis confirmed its superior binding energetics compared to other candidates. The FEL analysis highlighted narrow and deep minima for ZINC000008214766, indicating strong conformational stability. Properties of ZINC000006845076 and ZINC000253498755 followed moderate binding but low stability. CONCLUSIONS:The study underlines the possibility of ZINC000008214766 acting as a potential lead compound in inhibiting Pks13-TE and presents a new therapeutic strategy against TB. MRI images contain a lot of subtle information related to various lesions which are difficult to be picked up by radiologists. Computer aided diagnosis CAD is a valuable tool to improve the ability of an average radiologist to diagnose the subtle lesions. This study uses the isolated foreground pixels in MRI images as a feature able to discern a stroke patient by a healthy one. Brain MRI image was divided into eight equal sectors. The isolated foreground pixels (i.e. pixels satisfying a neighborhood configuration that corresponds to an isolated foreground pixel) were extracted using hit-or-miss and skeleton transformations. We have tested the proposed algorithms using two cerebral image datasets (healthy and acute stroke patients). The mean SD values of isolated foreground pixels for stroke patients systematically exceed the corresponding values for healthy patients. The higher numbers of isolated foreground pixel determined using hit-or-miss transform indicate this method as a promising approach for a simple and quick evaluation of stroke. © SGEM 2019.

One of the risk factors in skin cancer is unprotected exposure to UV radiation. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer but also curable if it is diagnosed in the early stages. This study uses a histogram analysis technique to investigate and classify two common skin lesions, nevi and melanoma. The colour feature investigated is the optimal threshold values in RGB space. Also, a boundary limit of the skin lesions is performed using a colour histogram analysis and the optimal threshold determination. A statistical analysis of the relevant threshold values for R, G and B histograms to establish a sound colour separation between benign and malignant lesions is performed. Monochromatic channel threshold values are clustered using K-means and the validity of clustering is assessed by silhouette method. The proposed method technique is evaluated using 120 colour digital images (60 melanomas and 60 nevi) from the Digital Archive of the department of Dermatology of the University Medical Center in Groningen (UMCG)1. The reported results suggest red as the lesion representative colour in dermoscopic images. The pixel values for red channel are strongly related to the skin lesion type. © SGEM 2019.

Compositional synthesis of large-scale stochastic systems: A relaxed dissipativity approach

This paper is concerned with a compositional approach for the construction of finite abstractions (a.k.a. finite Markov decision processes) for networks of discrete-time stochastic control systems that are not necessarily stabilizable. The proposed approach leverages the interconnection topology and finite-step stochastic storage functions, that describe joint dissipativity-type properties of subsystems and their abstractions, in order to establish a finite-step stochastic simulation function between the network and its abstraction. In comparison with the existing notions of simulation functions, a finite-step stochastic simulation function needs to decay only after some finite numbers of steps instead of at each time step. In the first part of the paper, we develop a new type of compositional conditions, which is less conservative than the existing ones, for quantifying the probabilistic error between the interconnection of stochastic control subsystems and that of their abstractions. In particular, using this relaxation via a finite-step stochastic simulation function, it is possible to construct finite abstractions such that stabilizability of each subsystem is not required. In the second part of the paper, we propose an approach to construct finite Markov decision processes (MDPs) together with their corresponding finite-step storage functions for general discrete-time stochastic control systems satisfying an incremental passivablity property. We show that for a particular class of stochastic control systems, the aforementioned property can be readily checked by matrix inequalities. We also construct finite MDPs together with their storage functions for a particular class of nonlinear stochastic control systems. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed results, we first apply our approach to an interconnected system composed of 4 subsystems such that 2 of them are not stabilizable. The optimization of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) parameters is crucial for improving performance, durability, and efficiency across various applications. However, existing metaheuristic algorithms face limitations such as slow convergence, susceptibility to local optima, and high computational costs. To address these issues, this study proposes a hybrid Artificial Gorilla Troops Optimizer and Honey Badger Algorithm (GTOHBA) to enhance PEMFC parameter estimation. The proposed algorithm integrates the efficient global search of GTO with the adaptive foraging behavior of HBA, ensuring better exploration-exploitation balance. The performance of GTOHBA was evaluated on six different PEMFC models: BCS 500 W, SR-12, Horizon H-12, Nedstack 600 W PS6, STD 250 W and Ballard Mark V. The results demonstrate that GTOHBA achieved the lowest sum of squared errors ( SSE min = 0.025493) with an exceptionally low standard deviation ( SSE SD = 8.35×10⁻⁶), outperforming other state-of-the-art optimization methods. Moreover, GTOHBA exhibited superior computational efficiency with the shortest runtime (0.179909 s), significantly reducing the computational burden compared to PSO and MFO. The theoretical analysis confirms that GTOHBA effectively mitigates issues of premature convergence and enhances parameter extraction accuracy through its hybrid structure. Practically, the algorithm enables precise modeling of PEMFC behavior, improving power output predictions with minimal absolute error (AE = 0.012913) and percentage relative error ( %RE = 0.061363 %). The key benefit for readers is the demonstration of a robust, fast, and highly accurate optimization framework for PEMFC parameter estimation. However, further research is needed to assess GTOHBA’s adaptability under dynamic real-time conditions and large-scale fuel cell stacks.
