Environmental changes have become a considerable issue over the past years. To be able to continuously monitor such variations in the environment, it is convenient to employ so-called Environmental Monitoring Systems (EMS) that can be deployed in remote places of interest, and that are capable of measuring multiple ambient characteristics. However, supplying EMS with power in a long term to prevent blackouts is challenging. This paper introduces an energy management method based on Reinforcement Learning algorithm, particularly Q-learning. The EMS described in this study needs to meet a set of strict requirements, e.g. low power consumption, high reliability, self-sustainability with respect to power supply, backup of data acquired through the measurements in case of an unexpected failure and many others. The energy is harvested using solar panels and stored in supercapacitors. In addition, the implementation of a complex algorithm is not suitable for such a system, considering the energy constraints. The solution to the above mentioned challenges is described in this study. The findings were implemented in a physical EMS device, and subsequently tested in field so as to acquire real-life data.

KM3NeT is a research infrastructure hosting two neutrino detectors which are currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ARCA detector focuses on the detection of high energy neutrinos (>TeV) from astrophysical sources. In this contribution, an analysis of the data obtained during 2021-2022, using machine learning techniques, is presented. The potential of KM3NeT/ARCA to detect a diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos at the early stages of the detector construction is reported. The KM3NeT/ORCA detector (Oscillation Research with Cosmics in the Abyss) is an array of Digital Optical Modules, spheres that host 31 photomultiplier tubes, tied together in vertical structures, the Detection Units, which are anchored on the seabed. Such an array configuration can detect neutrino events from the Cherenkov radiation emitted by the secondary particles induced by neutrino interactions in the abyssal depths of the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ORCA detector is being deployed at a depth of 2450 m offshore Toulon, France with the determination of the Neutrino Mass Ordering being the main physics goal of the detector. The aim of this work is the study of atmospheric neutrinos with energies at the 1-100 GeV range, in order to obtain information on the atmospheric muon neutrino flux in this energy range, in which only few measurements exist by other experiments. An analysis of data collected with the 6-Detection Unit configuration of KM3NeT/ORCA (KM3NeT/ORCA6) is being presented in this contribution. The data analyzed corresponds to a time period of one and a half year. The procedure for the selection of a high-purity atmospheric neutrino sample, using a Machine Learning classifier (Boosted Decision Tree), is described. Subsequently, an unfolding scheme is used to obtain an estimation of the atmospheric muon neutrino flux in bins of energy in the region of interest. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

We explain why a sampling (division of data into homogenous sub-samples), seg-mentation (selection of sub-samples belonging to a small sub-area in ID plane- A segmentation zone), and scaling (a linear transformation of random variables representing a standard sub-routine in a general scheme of an unfolding procedure) are necessary parts of any vehicular data investigations. We demonstrate how representative traffic micro-quantities (in an uni-fied representation) are changing with a location of a segmentation zone. It is shown that these changes are non-trivial and correspond fully to some previously-published results. Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.

Oscillations of atmospheric muon and electron neutrinos produce tau neutrinos with energies in the GeV range, which can be observed by the ORCA detector of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. First measurements with ORCA6, an early subarray corresponding to about 5% of the final detector, are presented. A sample of 5828 neutrino candidates has been selected from the analysed exposure of 433 kton-years. The ντ normalisation, defined as the ratio between the number of observed and expected tau neutrino events, is measured to be Sτ = 0.48+0−0.335 . This translates into a ντ charged-current cross section measurement of στmeas = (2.5+2−1.68) × 10−38 cm2 nucleon−1 at the median ντ energy of 20.3 GeV. The result is consistent with the measurements of other experiments. In addition, the current limit on the non-unitarity parameter affecting the τ-row of the neutrino mixing matrix was improved, with α33 > 0.95 at the 95% confidence level. Deep learning (DL) models have provided state-of-the-art performance in various medical imaging benchmarking challenges, including the Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) challenges. However, the task of focal pathology multi-compartment segmentation (e.g., tumor and lesion sub-regions) is particularly challenging, and potential errors hinder translating DL models into clinical workflows. Quantifying the reliability of DL model predictions in the form of uncertainties could enable clinical review of the most uncertain regions, thereby building trust and paving the way toward clinical translation. Several uncertainty estimation methods have recently been introduced for DL medical image segmentation tasks. Developing scores to evaluate and compare the performance of uncertainty measures will assist the end-user in making more informed decisions. In this study, we explore and evaluate a score developed during the BraTS 2019 and BraTS 2020 task on uncertainty quantification (QU-BraTS) and designed to assess and rank uncertainty estimates for brain tumor multi-compartment segmentation. This score (1) rewards uncertainty estimates that produce high confidence in correct assertions and those that assign low confidence levels at incorrect assertions, and (2) penalizes uncertainty measures that lead to a higher percentage of under-confident correct assertions. We further benchmark the segmentation uncertainties generated by 14 independent participating teams of QU-BraTS 2020, all of which also participated in the main BraTS segmentation task. Overall, our findings confirm the importance and complementary value that uncertainty estimates provide to segmentation algorithms, highlighting the need for uncertainty quantification in medical image analyses. KM3NeT/ORCA is an underwater neutrino telescope currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea, with the goal of measuring atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters and determining the neutrino mass ordering. KM3NeT/ORCA can additionally provide constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model which could appear through strong matter effects, such as the neutrino Non-Standard Interactions (NSIs). This work reports on the results of the NSIs search with the final dataset of ORCA6, the first configuration of ORCA with six detection units, which uses 433 kton-years of exposure and improved calibration, reconstruction and selection methods compared to previous works. The obtained bounds at 90% CL, |Εμτ| ≤ 5.5 · 10−3, |Εeτ| ≤ 7.8 · 10−2, |Εeμ| ≤ 5.8 · 10−2 and −0.015 ≤ Εττ − Εμμ ≤ 0.016, are comparable to the current most stringent limits on any NSIs parameter. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.
