A survey of major techniques of clothing in vision

Clothing in vision plays an important role in many applications of digital clothing, virtual fitting, fashion design and manufacturing. The research of clothing in vision is full of technical challenges, such as background detection and features extraction. In this paper, we introduce the latest remarkable works of clothing in vision area, including clothing segmentation, clothing recognition and clothing retrieval. There are many remarkable advances on the basis of the predecessors' achievements in the three fields. Firstly, we provide an overview of the techniques for clothing segmentation and clothing recognition. Then, we introduce and analyze the representative works on clothing retrieval. Finally, we forecast broader application prospect and future research work of clothing in vision. © 2015 Binary Information Press & Textile Bioengineering and Informatics Society December 2015.

Identification of emission sources of umbral flashes using phase congruency

The emission sources of umbral flashes （UFs） are believed to be closely related to running umbral and penumbral waves, and are concluded to be associated with umbral dots in the solar photosphere. Accurate identification of emission sources of UFs is crucial for investigating these physical phenomena and their inherent relationships. A relatively novel model of shape perception, namely phase congruency （PC）, uses phase information in the Fourier domain to identify the geometrical shape of the region of interest in different intensity levels, rather than intensity or gradient. Previous studies indicate that the model is suitable for identifying features with low contrast and low luminance. In the present paper, we applied the PC model to identify the emission sources of UFs and to locate their positions. For illustrating the high performance of our proposed method, two time sequences of Ca n H images derived from the Hinode/SOT on 2010 August 10 and 2013 August 20 were used. Furthermore, we also compared these results with the analysis results that are identified by the traditional/classical identification methods, including the gray-scale adjusted technique and the running difference technique. The result of our analysis demonstrates that our proposed method is more accurate and effective than the traditional identification methods when applied to identifying the emission sources of UFs and to locating their positions.

Evolution of isolated G-band bright points: size, intensity and velocity

We study the evolution pattern of isolated G-band bright points （GBPs） in terms of their size, intensity and velocity. Using a high resolution image sequence taken with the Hinode/Solar Optical Telescope （SOT）, we detect GBPs in each image by the Laplacian and Morphological Dilation algorithm, and track their evolutions by a 26-adjacent method in a three-dimensional space-time cube. For quantifying the evolution, we propose a quantification method based on lifetime normalization which aligns the different lifetimes to common stages. The quantification results show that, on average, the diameter of isolated GBPs changes from 166 to 173 km, then down to 165 km; the maximum intensity contrast changes from 1.012 to 1.027, then down to 1.011; however, the velocity changes from 1.709 to 1.593 km s-1, then up to 1.703 km s-i. The results indicate that the evolution follows a pattern such that the GBP is small, faint and fast-moving at the birth stage, becomes big, bright and slow-moving at the middle stage, then gets small, faint and fast-moving at the decay stage until disappearance. Although the differences are very small, a two-sample t-test is used to demonstrate there are significant differences in means between the distri- butions of the different stages. Furthermore, we quantify the relationship between the lifetimes of GBPs and their properties. It is found that there are positive correlations between the lifetimes and their sizes and intensities with correlation coefficients of 0.83 and 0.65, respectively; however, there is a negative correlation between the life- times and velocities with a correlation coefficient of-0.49. In summary, the longer the GBP persists, the bigger, brighter and slower it will be.

Research in video detection of lane curve and its application in speed alert system

That vehicles travel on a curve with excessive speed tends to skid or roll over. This study presents research in video recognition technology of lane and its application in traffic early safety alert system, which improves traffic safety. In our study, we use a monocular camera to acquire the image of the road ahead. Techniques such as gray-scale transformation, filtering, edge detection and curve fitting are used for the recognition of the lane line and curve fitting. Then radius of curvature of the road ahead will be extracted and then the maximum safe speed, which is to be compared with the speed of the vehicle in safety alert system. Experiments show that this method can accurately calculate the radius of the curve ahead and timely give alert message when the vehicle's speed exceeds safe speed. © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2014.

Detecting and monitoring the numerous household appliances in smart home is significant for home energy management, because the large various household appliances are complicated to identify and control. This paper proposes an intelligent unsupervised model for the classification and recognition of household appliances. The key idea in this work is to integrate appliance and activity recognition mechanism for effective management and operation within a domestic location. We first present the corresponding classification list of household appliances w. r. t their respective usage patterns and basic power factors. Then, the communication services among various appliances are established to recognize complex appliances and monitor the variation of their states. Finally, the proposed method is applicable for an inexpensive, unsupervised controlling of electrical appliances in a real-time way. Experimental results show that our method effectively provides a financially viable and easily applicable solution for gathering information and monitoring status of diverse household appliances. The application based on P2P technology is one of the most important application of the Internet, but it is often affected by the node failure or abnormal nodes exit. In P2P network, node failure can cause data loss and invalid index, then reduce QoS (Quality of Service) of P2P network, lead to reputation system crashes and so on. Therefore the P2P node failure handling and recovery method can effectively prevent and deal with the mentioned negative influence. Above these problems are very important to improve the robustness and QoS of P2P network. This paper first introduces the background and the causes of node failure of P2P network. Second, we review the main progresses of node failure prediction, node data recovery, super-node selection and routing node algorithm etc. dealing with node failure handling in recent year. Finally, some challenging research problem in the future work is discussed. © 2014 IEEE.

Evaluating dataflow vulnerabilities of scientific workflow based on data dependency patterns

If potential contributors leading to system failure can be identified when a scientific workflow is modelled, a lot of system vulnerabilities may thus be revealed and improved. In this paper, we first use data dependency patterns to describe dataflow in a scientific workflow. Then, the state function that describes the causal relations leading to incorrect state of an output is presented. We use a series of fault tree symbols to illustrate the state functions. Thus, fault tree analysis method is used to identify critical elements and elements combinations that lead to the incorrect state of any output item and calculate the probability of the incorrect state based on the probabilities of the basic events in the analysed workflow. Finally, an importance measure is designed to prioritize the contributors of system failure. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed methods are proved by example and experiments. © 2013 by Binary Information Press.

Sunspots are dark areas with respect to their surrounding area because the temperature of sunspot areas is lower than the average temperature of the solar surface. It provides essential information for many aspects of solar physics. A sunspot is composed of umbra and penumbra. It is a prerequisite for studying solar physics and spatial atmosphere to accurately segment and extract sunspot structures. Consequently, we propose an automated detection technique for segmenting and extracting them. The detection procedure is composed of two steps:(1) segmenting and extracting sunspot umbra with morphological reconstruction;(2) detecting and segmenting sunspot penumbra with region growing. For evaluating the accuracy of the detection procedure,we used a high-resolution observation obtained by Solar Optical Telescope onboard Hinode, and other obtained with the Dutch Open Telescope to illustrate the performance. The results demonstrate that our proposed technique is significant effective and accurate, and is suitable for studying the sunspot evolution and their physical phenomena.

Long-term hemispheric variation of the flare index

The long-term hemispheric variation of the flare index is investigated. It is found that, （1） the phase difference of the flare index between the northern and southern hemispheres is about 6-7 months, which is near the time delay between flare activity and sunspot activity; （2） both the dominant and phase-leading hemisphere of the flare index is the northern hemisphere in the considered time interval, implying that the hemispheric asynchrony of solar activity has a close connection with the N-S asymmetry of solar activity.
