Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) and model-driven architecture (MDA) are very important as technologies to resolving lifecycle challenges of DRE systems, including requirements analysis, design, validation, development and testing. This paper provides two contributions to the study of DRE systems development. First, analyzes non-functional requirements of DRE systems. Second, proposes a new aspect-oriented middleware based DRE systems software process, and applies AOP and MDA technologies to the process. The characteristics of middleware are considered in the entire DRE systems software process from requirements analyze phase to testing phase.

In this paper a system for control and 3D visualization of a manipulator for weld inspection of nuclear reactor vessels is described. Based on client-server TCP/IP software architecture, the presented control system enables an operator to perform the entire inspection procedure remotely over a network, avoiding exposure to dangerous radiation which is commonly present in nuclear reactor environments. The developed graphical user interface provides all necessary tools needed for planning robot scan trajectories, their verification on a virtual 3D model and execution on a remote robot. In addition, the weld inspection process can be observed in parallel on a virtual robot and reactor vessel model and on live video streams captured by two special cameras mounted on the robot.

We investigated what influences the average luminance level (ALL) of displayed images, screen illuminance, and viewers ages had on the preferred luminance of LCDs. Twenty young subjects (mean age: 21.8) and 24 seniors (mean age: 68.9) adjusted the luminance of a 17-inch 1000: 1 LCD monitor to their preferred levels under different experimental conditions. The results indicate that the preferred luminance of LCDs corresponded to the following formula: Lp=k x ALLα. This is where Lp is the peak white luminance of the LCDs, k is a constant, and ALL is the average luminance level of the displayed images. Here, α is a constant from -0.19 to -0.20 for the seniors and from -0.14 to -0.17 for the young subjects. The influences of age-related changes in vision and ambient lighting on the luminance requirements for LCDs are also discussed. These results can be applied to the design of luminance-control systems for LCDs.

This paper proposes a new concept of the genetic robot which has its own robot genome, in which each chromosome consists of many genes that contribute to defining the robotpsilas personality. The large number of genes also allows for a highly complex system, however it becomes increasingly difficult and time-consuming to ensure reliability, variability and consistency for the robotpsilas personality while manually initializing values for the individual genes. To overcome this difficulty, this paper proposes an evolutionary algorithm for a genetic robotpsilas personality (EAGRP). EAGRP evolves a gene pool that customizes the robotpsilas genome so that it closely matches a simplified set of features desired by the user. It does this using several new techniques. It acts on a 2 dimensional individual upon which a new masking method, the Eliza-Meme scheme, is used to derive a plausible individual given the restricted preference settings desired by the user. The proposed crossover method allows reproduction for the 2-dimensional genome. Finally, the evaluation procedure for individuals is carried out in a virtual environment using tailored perception scenarios.

The paper presents the theoretical background and realization of a KM system for the technically advanced customer and product support in the Ambient Intelligence (AmI) domain. Current products include more and more elements of AmI. AmI area is still not state-of-the art in market available products, but there is a clear trend towards products which will be fully based or include different forms of AmI. The paper presents a new KM system using CBR to support so-called AmI product extension. The product extension includes customer support in solving different problems related to the AmI products utilisation. The paper specifically explores the challenges due to increased/more complex interaction between the customers and AmI products. The approach for definition of appropriate set of attributes in CBR system to describe different cases and problems with AmI products is elaborated. The objective is to define a system suitable for AmI products provided by SMEs but capable to cope with the complexity imposed by AmI aspects. The KM system developed and the results of initial testing in industrial environment of SMEs are presented.
