This paper focuses on the extraction of retinal blood vessels which play vital roles in early diagnosis and prevention of several diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and stroke. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of powerful image processing techniques such as, contrast enhancement, filtration and thresholding for more efficient segmentation. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, experiments are conducted on 40 images collected from DRIVE database. The results show that the proposed algorithm yields better results compared to other known algorithms. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, the DEC (Differentiating Evolutionary Computation) algorithm is presented for solving a zero-one multidimensional knapsack problem. It has three new improvements. They are the use of a chromosome bank for elitism, the use of the superior clan and the inferior clan to improve exploitation and exploration, and the use of genetic modification to enable faster convergence. The experimental results have shown that the DEC algorithm is better than a greedy algorithm and a generic genetic algorithm. It can find solutions very close to those found by the algorithm proposed by Chu & Beasley. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This article introduces the problem of parallelization of Dijkstra's algorithm, a well known algorithm for computing single-source shortest path in a graph. Dijkstra's algorithm can be applied to graphs with a various number of vertices and edges. Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm is implemented and presented, and the performances of its parallel and serial execution are compared. The algorithm implementation was parallelized using OpenMP (Open Multi-Processing) and OpenCL (Open computing Language) standards. Its performances were measured on 4 different configurations, based on dual core and i5 processors. The experimental results prove that the parallel execution of the algorithm has good performances in terms of speed-up ratio, when compared to its serial execution. Finally, the results show that, because of Dijkstra's algorithm in itself is sequential, and difficult to parallelize, average speed-up ratio achieved by parallelization is only 10%. This proves to be a huge disadvantage of this algorithm, because its use is widespread, and enhancing its performance would have great effects in its many uses. © 2012 MIPRO.

University students learning object-oriented programming (OOP) encounter many complexities. This paper describes a study in which the primary researcher undertook empirical research aimed at analysing learners' interactions with the visual environment, Alice with rapid prototyping functionality. A questionnaire survey investigated the learners' experience with the Alice environment and their understanding of OOP. Findings indicate that learners lack problemsolving abilities;are unable to grasp programming concepts on an abstract level;and spend insufficient time practicing programming exercises. Alice has proven to be an effective tool in helping to address some of these challenges and in improving learners' grasp of OOP. Furthermore, the learners' subsequent programming processes and performance were investigated. Results revealed that there was no statistically significant improvement in the performance of the learners who had been taught Alice in comparison to similar learners who were not exposed to the Alice intervention. © 2012 IADIS.

This successful National Science Foundation supported five-year STEP program has come a long way in three years. Built upon several years of working with urban community colleges (CCs), this program was built primarily on a one-year preliminary study of a large university working with three rural community colleges. Specifically this program has a university and five non-metropolitan CCs working together to increase the interest, retention, and graduation of students in engineering and computer science who, before this program, had never interacted with university faculty and students. Females and underrepresented minority students are especially encouraged through this program. A large emphasis is also placed on having the students go directly to graduate school upon receiving their BS or BSE. The program includes scholarships for upper division transfer students from these five schools. The program is also supported by two NSF S-STEM grants which provide scholarship money for urban upper division transfer and non-transfer students, as well as scholarship money for four semesters of graduate school for students who have graduated through the program. In addition, this past year, urban transfer students were supported with scholarship money provided by a Women & Philanthropy group. Major accomplishments are outlined, with an emphasis on the work that has been accomplished in the last year. The challenges that remain and future plans are also discussed. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2013.

This paper describes the procedure and the results of measuring the speed of processing arrays on 1, 2, or 3 hosts, connected in LAN. The measurement scenario was based on having the fixed processing time for each array member in all cases. Also, processing each array member is individual from processing others. For gaining control data, the array was processed on only one host. Afterwards, the array was split in two and three equal pieces for processing on two and three hosts, respectively. The communication between the hosts was established by using socket programming techniques ***. The results were impressive because the speed-up in some cases was almost linear. © 2012 MIPRO.

Named entity recognition (NER) has been a well-studied problem in the area of text mining for locating atomic element into predefined categories, where "name of people" is one of the most commonly studied categories. Numerous new NER techniques have been unfolded to accommodate the needs of the application developed. However, most research works carried out focused on non-fiction domain. Fiction domain exhibits complexity and uncertainty in locating protagonist as it represents name of person in a diverse spectrums, ranging from living things (animals, plants, person) to non-living things (vehicle, furniture). This paper proposes automated protagonist identification in fiction domain, particularly in fairy tales. Verb has been used as a determinant in substantiating the existence of protagonist with the assistance of WordNet. The experimental results show that it is viable to use verb in identifying named entity, particularly "people" category and it can be applied in a small text size environment. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents a study on the performance of equivalence checking algorithms for combinational circuits. The algorithms are implemented in OpenAccess Gear (OAGear). OAGear is an open source development environment with a library of tools which contains the implementation of the algorithms on OpenAccess platform. The purpose of this paper is to identify the bottleneck of the tools and seek for more potential research opportunities after analyzing the experimental results. Hence, the algorithms are tested with ISCAS-85 benchmark circuits through a number of experiments. The ISCAS-85 benchmarks are verified against their non-redundant versions. Based on the experimental results, we highlight several potential research opportunities which can be further investigated by the research community. © 2012 IEEE.

Named entity recognition (NER) is a subtask in information extraction which aims to locate atomic element into predefined categories. Various NER techniques and tools have been developed to fit the interest of the applications developed. However, most NER works carried out focus on non-fiction domain. Fiction based domain displays a complex context in locating its NE especially name of person that might range from living things to non-living things. This paper proposes VAHA, automated dominant characters identification in fiction domain, particularly in fairy tales. TreeTagger, Stanford Dependencies and WordNet are the three freely available tools being used to identify verbs that are associated with human activity. The experimental results show that it is viable to use verb in identifying named entity, particularly in people category and it can be applied in a small text size environment. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The limited computing resources on mobile device have always been an issue for game developers. With the open doors of mobile companies such as Apple and Android have provided, the barrier for entry into the game development field has significantly been lowered down. Many existing works do not understand the loophole on handling resources on the mobile device wisely, causing the program to experience lag or crash. This paper presents a novel collision detection optimization especially for shooting games where massive hit testing is required. We tackle the larger problem on collision between two groups of objects, rather than on the collision checking or intersection between two single objects. The number of objects involved may be as little as five objects or as more as hundreds of objects at one time. We will explain how to optimize the speed process while not using up too much of the memory. It is always important to ensure that it does not reach the maximum memory in the mobile device to prevent any crash in the game. In our result, it shows that our algorithm is efficient in term of having no lags or crashes. © 2012 IEEE.
